There is a beauty myth that you shouldn't match your lipstick to your dress. And guess what? It's wrong! Just take a look at Brie Larson, Ashanti and Drew Barrymore, who all matched their lips to their outfits recently. Cute, right? If done right you can break beauty conventions without looking like a total rebel, says Andrew Sotomayor, director of makeup for Wonderland Beauty Parlor in New York, who has worked with Kerry Washington and Amber Tamblyn. Read below for his three top tips for getting matchy-matchy.
GET THE LOOK ...
To nail this approach, make sure the color and the texture of your lipstick is as dressed up as your outfit. A full glam dress should be paired with full pigment lipsticks. Sheer glosses go best with casual looks, Sotomayor advises.
• For Brie Larson's look try Lancome L' Absolu Rouge in Absolute Rouge ($29, lancome-usa.com).
• For Ashanti's look try Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Plum ($12.50, occmakeup.com).
• For Drew Barrymore's look, try Covergirl Outlast Lipstain in Scarlet Pucker ($7.99, drugstore.com).
For a more relaxed, modern approach, choose a lipstick that's the same tone as the fabric (warm or cool). But that doesn't mean you have to wear blue lipstick with your denim jeans. Instead, Sotomayor recommends Lipstick Queen Jean Queen ($18, barneys.com), a sheer blue-based pink that flatters all skin tones and goes perfectly with denim.
To avoid color match overkill, accentuate just lips, just nails or just eyes with a pop of color—but never all at the same time.
