If there's one trend we truly HEART for late summer and early fall, it's bold color, specifically red. Not only does it brighten everything, it brightens everyone, including two of our Hollywood style faves, Rachel Bilson and Katie Holmes. Both stepped out in their best fire-engine finery recently, and instead of going for the predictable lady-in-red dress aesthetic, these two fash mavericks chose—gasp—PANTS. Thus, the age-old question must be posed: Who wore the red pants trend best?
In one corner, we have Miss Bilson (aka the new star of Hart of Dixie) in classic, ankle-grazing trousers. Immediately she scores points for giving her look a menswear twist, a trend we'll be seeing everywhere this fall. Also, being the makeover artist that she is, she does something virtually NO ONE can pull off—pairing loud pants with loud, multicolored prints. Y'all, that's BONUS POINTS right there. The secret to her success: paying attention to tailoring and practicing accessory restraint. As you can see, Queen B is jewelry-free. She chooses to accentuate her ensemble with a basic black clutch and (hold your breath) leopard print pumps. Was that a typo? NO. Fashion Champ Bilson has proven that we CAN pair flowers and leopards with cacophonous crimson, but only if we keep everything else subdued. Seriously, this gal is fearless and totally in the lead.
However, in the opposite corner we have Miss Holmes (aka Mrs. C) in kicky red capris. We can't tell for sure, but these calf-grazers also appear to be leather, which is another trend for fall. Tight and shiny, they also score BONUS POINTS for being completely AWESOME. What Knockout Katie has also done masterfully is pair her sultry slimmers with a white T-shirt (something we all have in our closet), as well toss in a brown (neutral!!!) mesh sweater over it all. Like Bilson, this could have been a fashion emergency but instead is a style epiphany. Who knew texturized red could look so fantastic with layered color AND high heeled loafers? Wait, isn't that also a MEGA TREND for fall, too? Yes, yes it is!
We don't know about you, but we're starting to feel some serious heat in this fashion fracas. How could we possibly declare a winner? We'll leave it up to you to decide...
