Phew, we're in the homestretch of the Best of 2011 and are MORE than ready to usher in 2012! Can you believe another year has passed? Neither can we, but we're ready to kick out the New Year's Eve jams in the most fervent of ways. Even though the NYE dress/outfit seems to be of the highest priority on this revelatory night, we're always at a loss of which warm weather coat to wear. How many times have you worn a strapless dress and hose with the thinnest of coats only to realize about 20 minutes in that you made a gigantic mistake by not working just as hard on your outerwear as on the rest of your outfit? (Yeah, us too.) Thus, we've rounded up a selection of cozy coats to suit every New Year's Eve need regardless of whether you're snazzing it up or chilling out on the couch with friends. It's important to stay safe on NYE, but it's also important to BE WARM out there too!

A big trend this fall was the parka with faux fur-rimmed hood. We love the utilitarian cool this type of coat conjures, and it looks fantastic over everything from jeans and tights to maxi layers. The ASOS Parka With Oversized Quilted Lining ($136.35) is a perfect choice both for color and roominess. You can stuff a sweater and bulky scarf under there no probs. The BB Dakota Azra Blanket Coat (Nasty Gal, $82.60) has that tribal pattern festiveness going on but also has the addition of a silk ribbon belt to make it look slightly more put together. We like it layered over monochromatic basics or jeans and a tank with combat boots and mussed-up hair. The Spiewak Morton Cape (Need Supply Co., $174) is dark, warm, and wooly. Plus, it's a poncho! Who doesn't love a poncho? It gives you room to layer underneath and there's a hint of femininity with the shape, so it can go over relaxed basics or even a comfy dress. Throw in that hat and you'll be the warmest one of all.

There are some NYE occasions that call for dressing neither up nor down. You know those parties where people tell you "festive attire" but also "nothing fancy"? It can be a style conundrum. If you opt for skinnies and a fun sweater with heels, we think this Free People Boucle Textured Jacket ($99.95) would be a perfect topper. Its structure hints at menswear but it's also classically feminine and easily pairs with any color. The BB Dakota Josie Coat (Need Supply Co., $89.99) is similar in feel but also more retro with a wraparound, Jane Fonda in Klute kind of sassiness. We love this over a miniskirt, tights, knee-high boots, and collared shirt kind of ensemble. If you've decided just to go the simple black dress route—nothing fancy, just an elegantly relaxed kind of affair—we suggest the BB Dakota Griffin Toggle Coat (Nasty Gal, $82.60) for some party color.

But if you're all set to rock out 2011 like it's going out of style (and it kind of is, when you think about it), then you'll need a fancy coat to go along with your fancy dress and hair. There's no need to go overboard with it, but you do want your coat to complement what you're wearing (no jean jackets over ball gowns, please). This A|Wear Leopard Swing Coat (ASOS, $136.35) would look lovely with a lady tux, velvet pant suit, or any black dress really, as it would infuse the all-over non-color with lightness and texture. Also, there's no better way to say good-bye to 2011 than in one of its biggest style trends—animal print (meow). We also like the ASOS Stripe Faux Fur Coat ($163.62) for both color and texture but also for its undeniable GLAM factor. It goes with everything too, from short glitter cocktail dresses to billowing maxis in the brightest of jewel tones. But for a hint of holiday timelessness in the most ladylike of silhouettes, Milly's Belle Suede-Trim Tweed Cape (Bergdorf Goodman, $345.00) is the way to go. This swinging cape would look super cute atop any manner of short or long, matte or sparkle dress. It says, "Hello, Winter," and also, "Good-bye, Last Year," and it says so in an cheerfully elegant way.
