With a whopping 9 movies on the horizon and some serious style cred under her belt, Olivia Wilde has a lot on her plate. But then again, this Andover grad is a total overachiever, and her latest project is a sure-to-be hit for everyone involved...yep, including us. The actress and activist has teamed up with Alternative Apparel on a new messenger bag/ backpack hybrid that's as cool as it is charitable. After spending the last few years involved in rebuilding Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, Olivia co-founded Campaign Happiness, an organization aimed at helping local development through rebuilding efforts, education, and more. "We've struggled to raise money for the organization for a while now," she explained last night at the bag's launch event in New York. "Everyone is very generous, but it's hard in this economy. So we wanted to find a way to combine commerce and get people to buy things they'd buy anyway, but to have the proceeds go toward somewhere great." The solution? An army green shoulder bag that works equally as well roughing it outdoors as it does pounding city blocks. (Just ask Olivia, she's used it for both!)
"The bag is inspired by a vintage army bag that I used to always carry in Haiti everytime we went, and still carry here," Olivia said. "I put everything in here, from cameras to bug spray to malaria pills in this bag. It represents our experience there." But even though she's more likely to carry city-appropriate staples like Australian Paw Paw lip balm or a light scarf around Manhattan, the versatile silhouette (you can wear it as a rucksack or as a hanging messenger bag) lends the unisex multi-tasking accessory a modern spin. Crafted from eco-friendly materials like recycled canvas and with proceeds going toward Port-au-Prince school Artists for Peace and Justice, who says shopping has to be selfish?!
