BIG news today, y'all! The world's newest CoverGirl and reigning champion of lady badassery, P!nk, is confirmed to perform at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards! She joins English-Irish boy band One Direction and the incomparable Alicia Keys on the night's performance bill. Unlike the bright-eyed, bushy-tailed boys of 1D, this isn't P!nk's first time at the rodeo. She's performed on the Moonman's stage three times before, and each performance and its corresponding outfit has been more shocking than the last.
For the 2002 VMAs, P!nk performed her hit mid-tempo ballad "Just A Pill". The set-up was relatively bare with little more than a band and a microphone. No pyrotechnics. No animated projections. No Cirque du Soleil back-up dancers. Just a roaming spotlight and a little dry ice/fog machine to accompany P!nk in a black leather crop top with bell sleeves, side-laced leather hotpants, and strappy leather heels. The gravelly voiced singer had shed her pink locks by this time and performed with a black pixie cut and finished off the look with black temporary tattoos in giant tribal patterns along her left leg. It was a sweet, simple, and fitting VMA debut, but it was just a warm-up.
In 2008, P!nk kicked things up considerably both sartorially and for her performance. The newly white-grey-haired P!nk performed her pump-up party anthem "So What" with an outdoor set of brick buildings, sliding stunts, and a major wardrobe change from a satin cobalt swing coat with black rosette lapel detailing to a leather bodysuit with long sleeves, a collar, and a button placket left undone down to her belly-button. Saucy!
P!nk returned to the MTV stage for the infamous 2009 VMAs. Fittingly, her "Sober" performance and outfit were equally unforgettable. P!nk belted the emotional song all while performing a trapeze act with a sinewy, shirtless man partner AND wearing a lycra harlequin ensemble with a glittery heart tromp l'oeil pastie.
While the range of outfits from 2002-2009 really give no good indication as to what she might come up with for this year's performance, we have our fingers crossed she'll finally make a VMA appearance with the hair color she's named after! Stay tuned!
