Lady Gaga and Rihanna are two of the most fashion-forward popstars in the game right now, it's no wonder they're killing it in our fan-voted Best Dressed of 2012 poll. In the same breath, it's also no wonder they're constantly breaking style ground, even when they're off the clock. What fringy fashion are these ladies pioneering this time? Both Mother Monster and Rih are making a case for a new vacation must-have accessory: the hole hat.
What's a hole hat? Simply put, it's a hat with the whole crown busted out, leaving a giant hole for your hair to cascade out of it. Not to be confused with visors, hole hats have the same silhouette as normal top-having hats, like Gaga's which could easily be mistaken as a regular ol' safari chapeau until you see her soft waves rolling out from ABOVE the brim. Both Gagaloo and Miss Fenty have a storied experimental relationships with headgear from Gaga's tie to legendary milliner Philip Treacy to Rihanna's head harness and back to the infamous hat beard of 2011, so seeing them in more boundary-pushing sombreros seems like an obvious next chapter.
After you get over the initial shock of The Hole Hat, it actually makes a lot of sense, especially as a seaside accessory as illustrated by Rihanna on her latest nautical vacay. The "Diamonds" singer and her straw fedora-looking topper make the greatest case for the hole hat as a functional shield for your face from the sun's harmful UV rays WITHOUT effing with the supremely covetable tonsorial phenomenon known as "beachy waves." It's protection without hat hair, and it's definitely a thing we can get behind. What do you think of Lady Gaga and Rihanna's hole hats? Let us know in the comments below!
