Take a moment to breathe after reading that headline, because we know you're totally freaking out, and if not, you should be. Grimes, Canadian electro-pop sorceress and all around rad girl, is collaborating with none other than Saint Laurent's Hedi Slimane on a capsule collection for the legendary French brand's menswear arm. The t-shirts feature illustrations drawn by Grimes herself and inspired by YSL's legendary 'Love' poster campaign from the 70's. They're graphic and evocative, featuring the YSL logo entwined with snakes, inside of creepy goat heads, or surrounded by planets and celestial creatures, and remind us a lot of Grimes' music, which is mystical and dark but also modern and completely accessible to a wide audience. The 5 piece collection will be released next month alongside the Saint Laurent Spring/Summer 2013 collection. You can see all of the tees, and read an interview with Grimes, from Vibe.
Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, explains to Vibe that she first met Slimane when he photographed her for Dazed & Confused, following which Boucher did some drawings for a spread in Vogue Japan. The idea to do the tees came out of that meeting and subsequent collaboration, and Claire had to turn them around fast. Most were done "in hotel rooms between shows and in the tour bus lol," she says.
And of course Vibe had to ask whether we'll see Grimes with her own collection someday soon and she answered with a resounding "hell yeah," but added that it won't be until she is "at least 2 more albums in." We may not have to wait that long for a different kind of collection though. "I kind of want to make a line of chainmail in the short term," Grimes states. We don't think she's joking.
