In case you’ve been snoozing (or are experiencing a Fashion Week-induced blackout), Janelle Monaeperformed live at Rebecca Minkoff’s Spring 2014 runway show last week and, true to form, it was electric. (Side note: Monae’s second studio album, The Electric Lady, is out today! *raises roof*) Minkoff’s brightly-colored collection, which drew inspiration from Frida Kahlo and Bianca Jagger, was edgy and modern and OMG can we please talk about those IN-SANE knee-high gladiator sandals? My heart was a-flutter. “I love the clothes, the shoes, everything!” Janelle told us.
The songs she chose to perform (which included “Dance and Die” and “Tightrope” from The ArchAndroid and a snippet of “Q.U.E.E.N.” from The Electric Lady) provided the perfect soundtrack to Minkoff’s edgy, modern collection and Janelle's signature black and white motif was a striking juxtaposition to the floral prints and colored lace. "I think it's great to be able to put the two art worlds together," Monáe said.
After the show, we caught up with our favorite bouffanted COVERGIRL and got the low-down on her stand-out style: “I’ve always loved black and white. I think you can play with it so much, but I’m a minimalist at heart. I love artwork that’s minimalist, I love structure, something robust, striking—and that’s how I look at wardrobe. It’s like walking art. And the messages are of inspiration, encouragement, empowerment. So whenever you think of black and white, when you think of me, I want you to think of those things.” Watch the full interview to hear more about Monae's clothes, her music and that killer COVERGIRL lipstick she was wearing on stage!
