Unfortunately for those of us looking forward to another Heat v. Thunder accessories arms race, the Oklahoma City Thunder narrowly missed their chance to play in this year's NBA Finals—leaving those of us invested in the Western Conference (for reasons I won't get into on this platform) with the Spurs. (Listen, they're a great team, one of the greatest, most consistent of all time, don't get me wrong, but from the fashion side of things offer only this.) But for those of you who, like us, are pining for the days of yore, there's a silver lining. WWD reports that OKC point guard Russell Westbrook is teaming up with Barneys for a very special collaboration. So dust off your lensless glasses, folks. Russ is about to turn your closet UP.
The exclusive range of sportswear and accessories will come via menswear vendors like Nike Jordan, Marcelo Burlon, Naked & Famous, Want Les Essentiels, Selima Optique, Globe Trotter, and Del Toro (a favorite of Heat guard Dwyane Wade as well). Russ is well-known for his over-the-top, style—heavy prints with an unabashed wielding of color—so we can't WAIT to see what he dreams up when Westbrook XO Barneys New York hit stores in July.
Westbrook isn't the first athlete to co-design a product or curate a collection, but we're getting particularly warm and fuzzy about this high-profile pairing. It's one thing, as an athlete, to have a pair of sneakers boasting your name. But denim and eyewear and luggage? For a historied fashion retailer like Barneys? It's another huge step forward in fashion for the world of sports.
