kenzo prefall 2012

Looks from Kenzo Pre-Fall 2012.

It happens every year. Suddenly, out of nowhere, one of us here at MTV Style draws in a mammoth gasp and announces—usually via IM—that it's ZOMG ALMOST FASHION WEEK, YOU GUYS. Headphones come off, brows are swept, hyperventilating sometimes ensues, and then we get back to work and file it in the back of our minds until the pre-fall collections start rolling in. Well, seeing as how pre-fall is happening, ohhhhh, NOW, and having looked at the calendar to see that NY Fashion Week is actually T-minus three weeks away, we're starting to get super excited for the fash-enchantment heading our way. Usually, we merely whet our appetites on pre-fall and never let ourselves truly lose it until the actual full collection hits the runway, but all of that has just changed. Folks, we're officially FREAKING OUT over Kenzo Pre-Fall 2012. Holy Mary Mother of BIG BIRD, this is the reason why we get all worked up about fashion! If this multilayered, pattern-splattered, gargantuan-proportioned, collar-happy, ACID YELLOW, creeper brogue-adorned collection is any indication of what Kenzo's going to unveil for Fall 2012, we might as well pull out the fainting couch now and get it over with already. There's so, SO much that we want from this collection!

azealia banks nicola formichetti mugler

As we're quick to point out every time we mention the words Azealia Banks, we're crazy obsessed with this gal. We don't even care how stalker-y and effusive we sound because this sweet-cheeked, sailor-mouthed sass machine from the "212" is gonna OWN 2012 just like we predicted. Not to throw our hair around and blatantly say the words style soothsayers, but we've been on this lady magic for awhile now. I mean, when we first heard about a possible Banks and Nicola Formichetti collabo, we hyperventilated, sprained our fingers typing for more info, then pester-stalked Miss B until she Twitpic'd a pair of Platform Jordan 3s he had custom made for her. We knew something was in the works but did not anticipate Formichetti, aka Mugler's creative director extraordinaire, would set his men's fall 2012 show to the new Azealia Banks track, "Bambi". Um, brains. EXPLODING.

Katy Perry Eyelashes Created by Eylure in Oh My!
Photo: Ulta.com

Katy Perry eyelashes are here! We don't mean her actual eyelashes are hanging out on our desk or anything (that would be odd), but her new faux lashes created by Eylure are finally available for peeping. The line doesn't officially go on sale at Ulta stores until Valentine's Day, but In Style got an exclusive first look at the products. When we first heard about the line, we imagined the lashes would be a cross between neon glitter diva and sultry pinup, but boy, were we wrong! There isn't a trace of sparkle or wild tint (not even to match her new blue 'do); in fact, the lashes are actually quite tame and functional. They're perfect for everyday wear or for vamping it up on a night out. What's even better, Miss Perry gave In Style her tips on how to wear them.

contemporary costume award nominees

It's officially the middle of Awards Season™, and with the latest Grammy Awards announcement and Oscar nominations happening next week, things are about to kick into maximum overdrive. One awards event we are particularly fond of is the somewhat lesser known Costume Designers Guild Awards honoring costume excellence in both film and TV. For us, this is mayjah. We're OBSESSED with costumes in an unhealthy way...like in a Krispy Kreme hamburgers kind of way. Yeah, it's disgusting, and yet we're so thrilled with this year's nominees we don't care if we're covered in powder (wigs) or grease (Gosling) when the winners are announced on Feb. 21. Who wouldn't want to cheer on Ry-Ry's Drive jacket (we actually have a member of the staff who wears this satin juggernaut on a regular basis), the soiled bridal brilliance of Bridesmaids, or Rooney Mara's supremely badassish Lisbeth Salander costumes in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? Oh, and that's only the beginning where this year's costumes are concerned.

Kaia Crawford for Young Versace.
Photo: Versace's Facebook page

Supermodel Cindy Crawford is an icon to the fashion world. From her unofficial title of Most Beautiful Woman in the World for the entire 1990s decade—not to mention her stint as the ORIGINAL host of MTV's House of Style—she defined an era with her unconventional mole-infused beauty and athletic poise. Now it looks as if she's ready to hand the torch to her 10-year-old daughter, Kaia, who was just photographed for the new Young Versace campaign. All we can say is, like mother, like daughter, because HOLY MOLY, look at those insanely long legs! Geeeeeez. It might be totally inappropriate to discuss the elongated ligaments of a child, but purely from a pretend modeling scout standpoint, this little lady looks ready for her close-up, Mr. DeMille. But, really, let's talk about the clothes in this shot for a mo', please. Pure and simple, we want this outfit.

Clockwise from left: Catbird Silver Alphabet rings, ASOS bow rings, ASOS Articulated Ring With Chain, and Viveka Bergstrom Black Microcrystals ring.

Accessories are having a serious moment right now. From Lady Gaga's gold-dipped hands to street-style stacking bracelets and watches, if you aren't sassing up your nails, then you're mos' def getting your multiple accessory game on. What's interesting is we've been noticing that these trends are all starting to blend, and that's a beautiful thing. We've spied ladies wearing rings on their mid-fingers (a trend the fine folks over at Refinery 29 have also weighed in on) and sometimes stacked together near the knuckle. We've also seen rings being worn around fingertips (thanks to Beyoncé's "Run the World" video). Lucky for all of us, the high street stores have taken notice, too, and are ready to give us what we want (nay, NEED) and all at an affordable price. Thus, as we prepare to usher in the spring season—wayyyy earlier than is climatically possible—we urge you not only to change up, but MOVE UP your accessory game...albeit just on your fingers.

Favorite Brooklyn jewelry shop Catbird is already in on the midi-ring game and offering Silver Alphabet Rings (heart-shaped ones, too, just in time for Valentine's Day). The key to wearing this look is to stack thin, delicate rings, like the ASOS Pack of bow rings, which are just dainty enough. You can also go for an accordion ring, which does the work for you by connecting a regular-sized ring to a midi ring.

rocawear spring 2012

Looks from Rocawear's spring 2012 collection.
Photo: Rocawear on Facebook

Jay-Z has been in the news a lot lately. He's the brand-new proud father of Blue Ivy Carter, and for some reason, this happy news seems to have catalyzed somewhat critical chatter where the wee babe is concerned. Despite melting hearts with the new song, "Glory," which featured Blue's baby coos, there was the erroneous report that he was going to stop using the word bitch because he now has a daughter. His reps denied this, which made the media investigate deeper into the amount of times he used the word in his songs, and now there's speculation that Blue was the reason half of Rocawear's staff was laid off the day before her birth. That's a lot of pressure for a BABY, folks! As we're talking style here, perhaps the problems with Rocawear have more to do with the fact that its design elements seem to be stuck in the early aughts. Let's discuss, shall we?

rooney mara dragon tattoo bijules

Even though The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has been in theatres for a while, the gritty, Sweden-set film about a journalist and ace girl hacker (aka one of the coolest characters ever to grace the silver screen, Lisbeth Salander, played by Rooney Mara) is still making waves in the fash world. Miss Mara has been all over the place doing press for the film, wearing edgy ensembles that have kept the media talking, including her fantastic Golden Globes dress, which stood out with its H.R. Giger-inspired lattice and a mini bustle. It's like she became the part and continues to shock us with flashes of badassery, which in our opinion, is much needed on the red carpet. Aside from that H&M Dragon Tattoo collection that came and went, we're still really interested in honing the Salander look.

Now, thanks to designer Jules Kim, creator of bona fide brizilliant jewelry line Bijules, we can accessorize Lisbeth-style. And we mean by wearing the exact same rings Rooney wore in the film.

Willow Smith attends BET Honors 2012 in Washington, D.C.
Photo: Getty Images

WHOA, Willow Smith grew up OVERNIGHT! The pint-sized Fireball of the party, known for not only whipping her hair all around but also for sky-high wigs, insane shoes, and effusing utter 'dorbness and miles of talent in all of her 11 years, arrived to The BET Honors looking completely transformed into a rather adult version of herself. Wearing a canary yellow floor-length gown, black patent wedge heels, and her hair delicately swept to the side, we were blown away by this totally new look.

karl lagerfeld coupette cat

Karl Lagerfeld at the MoMa; Karl's new kitten Choupette sitting on a bathroom ledge.
Photo: Getty Images; "V" magazine's Twitter

You guys, Uncle Karl got a kitten! That's right, Karl Lagerfeld (aka my Uncle Karl, duh) surprised us all by allowing his friend Stephen Gan from V magazine to shoot a bathroom portrait of wee mini kitteh, CHOUPETTE sitting under a spray of roses looking insanely adorable while a bath is being drawn. (* Dying *) The photo was tweeted out to Lady Gaga and Nicola Formichetti with the message, "Hello Kitties! Karl Lagerfeld's Sunday night photo: meet Choupette, his new kitten." So, wait, was this SHOT by Karl as his bath was being drawn? Also, what kind of kitty is Choupette? (Could she be a Birman or a Ragdoll?) Is this why the pre-fall Chanel show involved Cat Power? Oh, and is this actually King Karl's bathroom, like fo' realsies with his bottle of Chanel Allure just waiting to be dappled atop the tepid surface of this ultra-modern tub? So. Many. Questions.
