That's right, Katy Cats! Your fearless ruler Katy Perry (she likes to go by "Mom") is headed for the 2013 Video Music Awards. Filling out an already star-studded lineup (so far including Lady Gaga and Kanye West), Katy will use her VMA appearance Sunday, August 25, at 9 p.m. ET at Brooklyn's Barclays Center for the premier live performance of her brand new single, "Roar." KP's been a VMA mainstay since her One Of The Boys mainstream debut, so in honor of her history-making homecoming (and in anticipation of what "new" Katy will wear for her performance, we're taking a look back at her VMA style evolution. Leggo!
2008: PIN-UP PERRY
Katy Perry at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards.
It's been a minute since we were first introduced to this version of KP: bubbly, blue-eyed and owner of one of the summer's hottest (in more ways than one) singles "I Kissed A Girl." For her breakout VMA appearance in 2008, Katy went for a red carpet look that mirrored the boudoir feel of her music video: a white satin bustier top with a demi halter neck and silver star embellishments, peach satin hotpants with maribou feather adornments, metallic fuschia round-toe pumps, and a glittery hard case clutch decorated with star-spangled rhinestones. Her lips were red, her liquid liner pristine, and she had a bow-shaped barrette in her hair.
The Stussy x Yo! MTV Raps collaboration.
This month 25 years ago, a little show called "Yo! MTV Raps" premiered on the very network we call home. It revolutionized rap and the landscape of music in general, catapulting what was once an underground genre intro the public televised eye. Since then, the widespread awareness and popularity of rap has escalated, and its pop culture footprint—influencing music, style, language, and more—only continues to grow. The show's run may have ended in 1995, but its role as a catalyst for the dissemination of rap to the masses is an undeniable one. In honor of the 25th anniversary of "Yo! MTV Raps," Stüssy has released a collaborative collection featuring 10 influential artists from the show's run.
Oh, red carpet. With the exception of the occasional summer blockbuster premiere, these warmer months are generally devoid of step-and-repeat steez. Luckily, come August, there's always the Teen Choice Awards (and of course, our own VMAs later this month #shamelessplug). The 2013 TCAs certainly didn't let us down in the well-dressed PYT department, and even though it was pretty much impossible, we did our best to whittle it down to the top looks of the night from Demi Lovato to Hailee Steinfeld and everyone in between.

Lovatics were treated to two Demi outfits as didn't just attend but also hit the stage to perform her single, "Made In The USA." On the carpet, D wore a black satin brocade blazer (which was swapped out for a leather jacket on stage), relaxed fit white tee, leather leggings, and black platform booties. Angling for a rock edge, the look was finished with layered silver necklaces, heavy smoky eyeliner, and a dramatic half-up half-down 'do with a high pompadour.

Take notes, boys. One Direction has just served up a catalogue's worth of model dude outfits for fall at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards. We've watched this 5-piece boy band grow from meticulous color-coordination to the loose use of denim as a wardrobe unifier. This latest red carpet and stage showing, though? That's just exemplary laid-back guy styling at its best. Let's start with 1D's TCAs arrival. Every dude showed up in a pair of jeans of varying washes and silhouettes (stone-washed relaxed fit for Liam, dark resin and cuffed for Louis, white and tight for Zayn, vintage wash and slim fit for Niall, and basically painted-on for Harry). The guys' shoe game is out of this world, and almost every one of them wore an excellent transitional jacket, save Harry who chose instead to wear a collared shirt unbuttoned just below his diaphragm and a wide-brimmed felt hat. Very John Mayer, no?
Hot diggity dog!

Of all the cookout foods-turned-clothes in the game right now (LOL thinking about there really being a game for that), hot dogs might be the most underrated. Sure, burgers are, like, KING in that space (fast food pun unintended, seriously), but we want to take this Friday to give the frank a little shine. It's meat in a tube + a bed of bread + a pile of whatever condiments you're feeling at the moment. It's a low maintenance cruise ship of sustenance that is also tasty and relatively pretty easy to eat. It's AWESOME, OK? Thus, we scoured the interwebz for things to help us wear our hot dog-loving hearts on our sleeves (literally) and properly pay homage to the frank.
Miley Cyrus for Harper's Bazaar.

Miley Cyrus may be better known, at this point, for her teeny tiny outfits, grills and arguable Dimepiece addiction, but that doesn't mean the girl can't also get down with some high FASHUN. I mean, remember how she slayed in fishnet Marc Jacobs at the Met Gala this year? Case in POINT. Welp, doubly proving that she's sartorially multi-faceted beyond her unicorn twerking onesie, Miley linked up with Harper's Bazaar for a COUTURE spread in the mag's September issue (a.k.a. the most important of the entire fashion editorial calendar)!
Theophilus London at his Southampton LVRS x SpongeBob SquarePants event.
You guys. In case you missed it, consummate cool guy Theophilus London has a collaboration with SpongeBob SquarePants. Theo and his LVRS fashion brand teamed up with Nickelodeon's pineapple-dwelling mainstay for a brand new capsule collection of London-meets-SquarePants goods, including a varsity-numbered tank top and a tee depicting Theophilus in Bikini Bottom. London launched the collaboration with a backyard pool party in Southampton, NY in late June, but this video interview from the event just went up on Hypebeast. Also, it's amazing.
A$AP Rocky performing for the Under The Influence Of Music tour.

Everyone give up a slow clap for A$AP Rocky wearing old school Tommy Hilfiger on stage for the Wantagh, New York stop of his and Wiz Khalifa's Under The Influence Of Music tour. The fashion killa has made a name for himself as such by regularly sporting the flyest, most current threads like custom KTZ, Raf Simons, and Ann Demeulemeester just to name a few. For his run on Rihanna's Diamonds World Tour, he wore Hood By Air high-end streetwear hot off the runway on stage in almost every city (BTW, we hear you can win a free, Rocky-signed HBA shirt from VFiles *WINK*). But now, it looks like he's turning to the archives for performance togs, pulling out and repping Hilfiger's iconic rectangular blocked logo.
Drake's Dada meme gets a shirt in the "Yolo Polo."
Photo: Instagram/Drake Yolo Polo
Remember how back in May, photos started emerging from Drake's "No New Friends" video shoot with DJ Khaled, Lil Wayne, and Rick Ross? Between the helicopters, champagne in the hot tub, and Khaled's vaguely retirement chic wardrobe, the video looked a lot like a YMCMB/Maybach Music Group parody of Behind The Candelabra. But the MOST wave-making part of the whole thing was a behind-the-scenes photo of Drake wearing a bumblebee color palette Dada ensemble and shooting Rozay a round-the-shoulder look with this bizarro swag-creep gait. The photo took the interwebz by storm, erupting into a full-fledged meme, and after almost three months since its inception, it's still living strong thanks to this here "Yolo Polo."
