Kanye West

Kanye West was full of fashion-centric quotables this year.

Aside from the birth of his first child, an epically romantic proposal to girlfriend/baby mama Kim Kardashian, and releasing one of the most critically debated albums of the year, which was then accompanied by a massive, production-heavy national tour, 2013 was kinda quiet for Kanye West, amirite?? I mean, like, we BARELY heard a peep outta the guy! *pauses for effect, then busts up in belly laughs* NAAAHHHHTTTTT. If anything, we've never heard so much of Yeezy. Especially on the topic of fashion.

Ye's year-long commentary on/battle with the fashion industry has kept us busy for the duration of 2013. Between lyrics likening his experience putting together his own line to picking cotton and others that publicly acknowledge Forever 21, Mr. West gave his 2 infinity cents on the subject of style, and we've distilled the stand-outs.

Beyonce

We are now embarking on Day 5 of Beyonce's 2013 wig snatch album release heard 'round the world. Just in case you were involved in some sort of experiment that had you cut-off from all humanity over the weekend, let me bring you up to speed. Without any promotion or warning, King Bey dropped a 14-track, 17-video visual album at midnight on December 13 via iTunes. She blew minds and shattered records, and yes, we are STILL talking about it!

Most of the music videos are still relegated behind the wall of iTunes where you need to drop some coin ($14.99 to be exact) to watch them, which IMHO is totally worth it because (A) cultural currency, (B) Beyonce, and (C) there are SO MANY OUTFITS you need to see to believe. Yesterday, Bey offered up her music videos for "Drunk In Love" and her new single "XO," giving you a taste of what you might be missing if you haven't copped the album yet. Funnily enough, those are also the only two videos on Bey's self-titled project that feature her in just one look. YOU GOTTA EARN THOSE WARDROBE CHANGES, Y'ALL!

All the BeyHiiiive, if you hear meeee, help me sing it ouuuuuut! Is everybody still breathing? Chances are, you're actually reading this a few days AFTER the Friday, December 13, 2013 release of Beyonce's brand new self-titled ~visual album~ because you chose to siphon yourself off from humanity to devote your attention to watching all 17 videos in full, end-to-end, at least three times in a row. TBH, I would have done the same if this wasn't my job. But here we are, right??

If you know anything about Beyonce's track record with music videos (*achem* "Countdown," "Crazy In Love," "SINGLE LADIES"???), you know these have to be iconic and FULL of fashion. The videos Bey released via iTunes last night are no exception, so we've taken on the daunting task of breaking them down look by look. That's right, folks. 17 videos. Look. By. Look. Lord Bey-sus be with us. BUT, don't think for one second that we're giving it to you all at once. We want this to last as loooooong as possible, so we're parsing them out little by little.

First up is "Pretty Hurts," which is basically Beyonce's version of "Unpretty" for 2013 (and '14 and beyonced). It opens up with Short-Haired Beyonce, which is a visual reminder (apart from the fact that you're hearing new Bey music via a music video you just bought on iTunes in the middle of the night) that ish is very different this time around.

The video centers around a beauty pageant setting but leans more Drop Dead Gorgeous than "Toddler In Tiaras." (Though, unfortuantely, no one wears a Mount Rushmore headpiece in Bey's show.) Mrs. Carter-Knowles represents as Miss 3rd Ward, a nod to her H-Town upbringings, and is seen here in beige, pointy-cup lingerie and a tiara.

Rihanna

If there's one thing we know about Rihanna, it's that she never met an accessory she didn't like. Where most might shy away from a headband you wear across your forehead or hoop earrings big enough to be chokers, she's embraced both in the past year with open arms. Her grill game is anything but conventional, and she's clearly down to experiment with headgear. Her latest aesthetic exploit? The Flandana, the winter-perfect brainchild of brother-sister duo, Beau and Haley Wollens. We caught up with Haley earlier today to get the #facts about Rih's Flandana (which you can cop for yourself for a cool $32)!

The intersection and overlap of music and fashion is nothing new. In fact, it's the very foundation on which MTV Style exists (without it, I'm pretty sure we would implode on ourselves in a flurry of glitter, which would be pretty...but very, very sad *whimpers*). It's been an exciting year for our favorite cultural cross section, with each side informing the other countless times, from designers tapping musicians for campaigns to musicians revealing their own designs. But the phenomenon we enjoyed the MOST this year? The designer track. That is, a track inspired by a specific designer or label, usually featuring the fashion house's name in the hook.

Sure, we've seen these in previous years—Kreayshawn's "Gucci Gucci" and Soulja Boy Tell 'Em's "Louis Vuitton" in 2011, Kanye West's "Christian Dior Denim Flow" in 2010, Jennifer Lopez's "Louboutins" in 2009, and so on—but the sheer volume of songs dedicated to fashion darlings in a year amplified by the earworm "and we'll never be roooooyaaaaals" is SUPER interesting and worth a closer look.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus has been repping the Chicago Bulls for years.

I've gotta get something off my chest: I was a little scandalized by Miley Cyrus' Chicago Bulls ensemble for Mike Will Made It's "23" music video. No, not because she was basically wearing underwear with high heels or a pair of bike shorts with a trompe l'oeil thong. Not even because of that microscopic Chanel bag! (But while we're on it, WTF can even fit in there??) Nope. Miles got me with that chopped and screwed Michael Jordan #23 jersey. I get goosebumps picturing a pair of scissors hitting that mesh. Does she know what she's doing?! I mean, what would MJ say??

Britney Spears

...Baby One More Time was the very first CD I picked out and purchased on my own, which positions me at the epicenter of a generation of young girls who looked to Britney Spears as a beacon of ~cool~ in their formative adolescent years. Before Baby, I latched on to the Spice Girls, but something about their over-the-top packaging and nicknames (and maybe also accents) kept them at arm's length—kind of like an IRL version of Jem and the Holograms. But then, Britney broke out with her video for "...Baby One More Time," and you could almost feel the reverberation of jaws dropping from coast to coast. The song alone was an instant pop classic, but coupled with her sexy schoolgirl steez, Britney's debut all but held you by the collar and screamed at you to take notice.

Truth be told, I may have been too young at the time to fully comprehend the sensational Lolita vibes in this video—all I saw was a girl singing in a school that looked like mine, hanging with a basketball, and showing a lot of stomach. (Sadly, pink maribou-feather hair ties did not survive to this year's '90s reboot.) I did know that it scared the s*** out of my parents, which, as a bratty preteen, obviously made Britney infinitely more appealing.

Justin Bieber

It's hard to tear your eyes away from all the mouth action (yea, I said it) happening in Justin Bieber's "All That Matters" music video, but if you are of sound enough mind and strong enough will to do so, you may have noticed something peculiar about the wardrobe. And no, I'm not talking about that blonde girl in the denim overall crop top that may or may not be from Rihanna's debut River Island collection. It seems The Biebs has pulled a page from Kanye's book of answers with this video steez by wearing a KILT. And a leather one, at that! Yep, the pop wunderkind took a momentary break from his super-saggy (not to be confused with swaggy), butt-baring pants in favor of these Rick Owens leather skinnies with an attached matching kilt.

Britney Spears

Britney Spears: turtlenecks' biggest fan.
GIF: Jenny Shafei

No one loves turtlenecks more than Britney Spears. It's just a fact. From her immaculate white "Sometimes" top to her red latex "Oops...I Did It Again" catsuit to her mid-aughts Starbucks run uniforms, the Louisiana girl-turned-woman has been a fan of the hyper-modest neckline since way back her earliest days of pop superstardom. That's not to say she didn't also delve into lower-cut territory (and midriff-baring and micro hemlines) because she totally totally did, but Brit's thing for turtlenecks, and even a subtle mock neck, is pretty unique, and with the exception of Spears herself has remained a relic of the late '90s until now.

Despite it not necessarily being the most flattering steez for most normal humans, Britney has stood by the look for over a decade and may be the precise origin to blame responsible for the sartorial phenomenon that is the short-sleeved, cropped turtleneck. Now, to celebrate her 32nd year (AND because we're right on the heels of her eighth studio album Britney Jean), we're offering up 32 turtlenecks for any brave lady (Brit included) whose closet (and clavicle) is feeling a little bare.
