The more things change...
Photo: @gwenstefani's Instagram

Attention all Gwenabees: Gwen Stefani has changed her hair and is showing off her new 'do on Instagram. Well, maybe new isn't the right word to use. The last time Stefani experimented with color was well into the '90s, and the last time she went dark (with blue-black streaks) was 1999.

The No Doubt vocalist known for her platinum blonde locks hasn't deviated from her signature coiffure in years. Could this be a sign of things to come? Stefani is about to start her stint as judge and mentor on this upcoming season of The Voice and has a show with the rest of her band in September in Central Park. Are other big beauty changes on the way?

Conchita Wurst, who came to international attention after winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2014, made news at Paris Fashion Week by walking in the Jean Paul Gaultier Couture show. Wurst closed out the show, a position usually given to the designer's favorite or the most famous model. Previous closers have included Dita Von Teese and Beth Ditto. Jean Paul has long been an advocate for so-called "unconventional" models. Early on in his career, he put out a listing in French paper Libération that read: “Nonconformist designer seeks unusual models–the conventionally pretty need not apply.”

Conchita is also the latest in a line of pioneers who are challenging mainstream conceptions of gender. This might be a reflection of fashion's fickle nature or it could mean that our perception of beauty has broadened; the fashion world is notoriously exclusive, and does not often veer from its rigid strictures of what is stylish, which is why we should not only applaud the casting decision, but also celebrate those who have come before. Below are a few other drag superstars who have made names for themselves.

The '90s ushered in the rise of the supermodel, and in 1992, it got its soundtrack, thanks to RuPaul's "Supermodel (You Better Work)." Soon after, in 1994, MAC Cosmetics tapped Ru to be the first face of Viva Glam, the line's campaign to raise awareness and outreach for those in the HIV/AIDS community, making Ru the world's first drag queen supermodel.

How perfectly coordinated is that purple to her ponytail?
Photo: @ritaora's Instagram

Man, Rita Ora doesn't know when to stop does she? Not only is she constantly changing up her hair game, she's also constantly elevating looks that she's previously rocked with aplomb. For example, Rita Ora's glittery baby hair. While we'e previously seen the style with braids, the "I Will Never Let You Down" singer debuted a new version of her baby hair over the weekend. This time, the old school favorite was showcased alongside a low, dip-dyed ponytail. The effect was soft, feminine, and beautiful. The game changer, though? A glitter accent.

Think I can train the stray cats on my block to do this?
Photos: Kamine Zoo

In a move that seems lifted from a Zoolander subplot, a Japanese zoo is letting its animals distress jeans. The lions, tigers, and bears (oh my) at Kamine Zoo are introduced to rolls of denim wrapped around their favorite toys, tires and and rubber balls, which they then maul, because, y'know, they're animals. The distressed material is then turned into jeans by Japanese designers.

Ain't it the truth.
Photo: Nasty Gal

I'm sure you've heard the news by now. Ryan Gosling is rumored to be having a baby with Eva Mendes. Also rumored to be true: my inability to love ever again. For those of you who are coming to terms with the debilitating news, I'm here you for you. And in the spirit of solidarity, I've found a couple of items to ease the grieving process as you walk along your very own boulevard of broken dreams.

Depending on your level of acceptance, there are two ways of approaching this devastating devlopment. There's the mature path of calm acceptance. Sure, Ryan Gosling isn't with you and you're dealing with a wellspring of emotions, but you're sophisticated enough to know that this is your life now. However, that doesn't mean you've entirely recovered. You'd still like to be handled with kid gloves until you're fully healed. Thankfully, Nasty Gal is on it.

Wow. In case you hadn't heard, Usher is going to perform at the 2014 VMAs. We've been thinking about Usher a lot lately, anyway. First of all, there's the "Good Kisser" remix by Disclosure. There's also the collab between Usher, Pharrell, and Nicki Minaj ("She Came to Give It To You") that already seems to be a floor burner. (Seriously, it's so catchy). But the one thing we really can't get out of our minds? That hat Usher keeps wearing.

He's been taking a page out of the Pharrell playbook by resurfacing vintage headgear. And while Ush may have had his raccoon cap since February, he’s been getting some serious mileage out of it. He’s been spotted in the cap while doing press to promote season six of The Voice, during a late night appearance with Jimmy Fallon, and, most recently, at the BET Awards. Where Usher goes, the hat goes. But does that mean it'll make the trip to Inglewood in August?

Solange is just so effortlessly cool, you know? I've been following the "Losing You" singer on Instagram for a while, waiting for updates on new music and trying to figure out how exactly she puts together those flawless outfits of hers. (Full disclosure: Mixing colors is not my strong suit—and don't get me started on prints—which is why Solange is a never-ending style inspiration.) Turns out, style runs in the family.

"When I look back at old pictures, my dad was always smartly dressed, my mom had the most elegant, beautiful style, and my sister was very into the ’90s Cross Colours look, and I…" says Solange, "just had all of these different things inside me… It’s interesting how the past comes back full circle and then it becomes more refined."

Before we go back to Solange, can we all just mentally take a moment to imagine Baby Bey in Cross Colours? R.I.P., me.

Happy Birthday, America! While you may be getting on in years (you’re a stately 238 this year, congrats), you’ve still retained your sense of independence and fun, which is what we love about you. And while the Senate might frown on the use of wearing reproductions of the American flag on your clothes and accessories, we do not. We believe in life, liberty, and right to wear flag prints. In honor of your special day, we've rounded up a bevy of of babes, each wearing their own interpretation of Americana. Just a note. This roundup is best accompanied by a patriotic soundtrack and any of the following: a hot dog, a hamburger, and/or a sparkler. So, without further ado...

BRITNEY SPEARS

Remember in 2000 when Britney Spears was on the cover of Rolling Stone wearing lace-up red leather pants and a midriff baring flag-printed halter top? Man, they grow up so fast, don't they?

KATY PERRY

Katy Perry might be the most patriotic celeb there is (minus Springsteen because—really—no contest). The "Dark Horse" singer has done just about everything you can do: hang out with VP Joe Biden, offered to pen a theme song for Hillary Clinton, performed at Obama's campaign rally in 2012 in a spandex ballot dress, and performed for our servicemen at the "VH1 Divas Salute the Troops" concert in 2010 in a pair of hot pants, thigh-high white boots, and a flag halter top. Bruce? You might have some competition after all.

MTV TOTAL REQUEST LIVE GRAMMY ARTISTS

'TRL' and the 2000s in a nutshell.
Photo: Getty Images

Today is the day! Are you ready for Total Ariana Live tonight at 7 p.m. on MTV? We definitely are. Not only is there going to be a stripped-down version of "Problem" (which I haven't been able to get out of my head all summer FYI), we'll also hear a brand new song from the pint-size powerhouse: "Break Free." What's more is that we're totally stoked about TRL coming back! (Or this ~Ariana~ version of it, at least.) You know TRL, the decade-long mainstay that invited the biggest celebrities and performers straight into your living room? Years before Belieber Fever swept the nation or 5 Seconds of Summer penned their ode to skivvies, and when Miley was living a double life as Hannah Montana.

Because we're feeling nostalgic, we gathered a collection of photos from some of our favorite style moments (most of these are from the Carson Daly years, because he's the prince of TRL).

COORDINATED COUPLES

While Justin and Britney might have pioneered the look, they weren't the only couple's matching. Jay Z and Beyonce were double-denim mirror images of each other years before they actually became a couple. Sometimes you're just on the same wavelength, you know? Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey also wore matching black tees and leather pants.

A still of Lupita Nyong'o's 'Braids' short for 'Vogue.'

The year of Lupita keeps rolling on with this delightful short from Vogue. The Oscar-winning actress and MTV Style Dreamgirl reveals that after a particularly disheartening trip to New York, she found herself "morbidly disappointed" with the braids she received in an African salon there. The botched job inspired Lupita to ask an aunt of hers back home in Kenya to teach her to cornrow, box braid, and twist—skills she still practices to this day!
