Gaga goes gaga for Gaga
Photo: Getty Images

OK, Lady Gaga, we know you are the "master of fame" and everything, which is a lovely and intellectual approach to the undisputed fact that you can't pee without the paparazzi making a spectacle out of it (Side note: Do you think Gaga uses a regular toilet, or some sort of future toilet that both celebrates and recontextualizes the nature of using the bathroom?), but girl is wearing a dress with her face on it. It's all good to represent your own brand, and we loved when Rihanna wore her own Rihanna hoodie because, well, sure.

But if we may, and no disrespect to you Gags because you're the best at being watched out there right now, but if you're self-reflexively commenting on the commerce of image, then maaaaaaaaybe while you're at it comment on the long tail of your fame by wearing Gaga wearing Gaga wearing Gaga wearing Gaga wearing Gaga ad infinitum until we're celebrating your meta-nesting-doll-reflected-self more than the original (the seventh one in is the TRUE STAR!) because that would be hilarious. Also, maybe the end of civilization.

Chloë Sevigny For Opening Ceremony Resort Collection 2011.
Photo: Adam Schneider

Once upon a time, I saw the Chloë Sevigny For Opening Ceremony Mary Ellen Platform Clog Booties in Natural (say that three times fast, if you will), my heart cracked open and my love for insanely treacherous shoes that put my small frame on stilts gushed out, all over the internet. Like Wayne's World, I uttered, "They will be mine. Oh yes." And with some minor lifestyle adjustments (HA HA! NO LUNCH!) I obtained my very own pair, and I am happy to say we are in love.

So when Chloë Sevigny invited me (YES ME!) to her very first Resort collection fashion show via anonymous form e-mail, I had to attend. Sevigny not only has the indie actress game on lock, but she's also the de facto paean of downtown style. She brought back the '90s before they even left. She rocked vintage when the rest of the red carpet was stumbling over the Italians. But with a forth season under her belt with OC (whose other collabs have included Rodarte and Pendleton), there is no more argument—she is now a real-deal designer. So we took a peek at her newest line and chatted with her about the cult of Chloë, and guess what? WE HAVE THE WORST NEWS: The shoes are bonkers. BONKERS. Just when I thought my heart was filled and I wouldn't want any more material goods, a pair of laser-cut leather wedges with a hidden heel traipsed down the runway and I suddenly felt bereft.

The CFDA Awards, hosted by the Council of Fashion Designers in America (hence the name CFDA), is appropriately dubbed the Oscars of fashion. Of course, the Council only recognizes American designers, but that is totally great with us because it reminds us that Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenburg and Vera Wang all claim this landspace as their own. The ceremony, a rather small affair that is about as easy to get invited to as the Royal Wedding, is the time when American designers get to walk with their current "muses." Past award winners featured Iman (as an icon), Michelle Obama (as a special tribute) and Rodarte (best womenswear).

The real Oscars are for beauty and classic-ness, but the CFDA's prove that a celeb has the fashion chutzpah to own the red carpet. And, of course, there was Lady Gaga, who is now an official CFDA Fashion Icon.

Love her, hate her, or shut off each time she is mentioned (which in all fairness, is quite a lot), her CFDA nod firmly cemented her status as a real game-changer, not just a punk kid in wacky boots. We love that she brought her vamped out sister Natali as her red carpet date. The piercing eyes and Italian fierceness is clearly genetic—though definitely NOT genetic was Gaga's blunt cut aqua bob, which appeared front and center. However, we aren't massive fans of her unwieldy and dragging train, which was reportedly such a hassle she couldn't make it into the press room for interviews. Yet, in true Gaga-watching form, we wrestle with conflicting emotions on her acceptance getup: She ditched the train and then turned around to moon the industry—Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington included. Maybe not the most classic and respectful of moves, but hey, even as a game-changer, she still is a punk kid in wacky boots. But she wasn't the only one who kept the paps a-snappin'.

Katie Cassidy, Selena Gomez, and Leighton Meester at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards in Universal City, California on June 5, 2011.
Photo: Getty Images

Unofficial announcement made on the red carpet at the MTV Movie Awards last night: the summer of femme has begun. Sure, we've spotted some pretty graphic pops of color recently, but leaving your vampy red lipstick and black liquid liner in March gives way to a clean, fresh vibe that is ready to pull up a beach towel, slather on some sunblock, and seriously apply some (waterproof) mascara.

Sea-salt-kissed hair stormed the carpet, and while Blake Lively and Mila Kunis opted for sleek and straight, the majority of the ladies opted for texture, waves, and very loose and effortless curls. With a rich, summery blonde, Katie Cassidy reminds us that "day after" hair is always better, especially with those just-right roots peaking out. While she has a healthy glow and a bit of gold shadow to warm her up, she let's her eyes peak out and draw us in, choosing a nice nude lip. White dress, blonde hair, pale lipstick could be a wash out, but the hair is textured and a healthy dose of mascara keep us captivated in the eye region.

Taking a very similar approach is one of our favorite looks of the night—the perfectly assembled Selena Gomez, who used the wavy hair/statement eyes combo, but whose dark color adds a bit o'drama. Yet the girl whose coif we must covet this summer is our very own Leighton Meester, who rocks the ombre trend with her thick-as-a-rope locks which have more volume than control. With a healthy dose of blush and simple lined eyes, she lets her lips go low-key—which leaves the realm of flirty and goes full throttle into the delightfully coy. (To add this sort of rough texture to your hair, using a sea salt spray-in after your hair is styled does the trick.)

Bryce Dallas Howard and Lily Collins at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards in Universal City, California on June 5, 2011.

We could go for the layup and mention that Bryce Dallas Howard's pregnancy has given her a natural glow, and sure, that might be true, but her complexion has always been peaches and cream. The red hair has always been her thing (except when Kirsten went red and Bryce went blonde for Spiderman...), and because it is so striking, she lets it fall loosely around her shoulders and relies on her GORGEOUS green eyes. She may not even be wearing lipstick; all BDH requires is a light gloss. But the girl who did au natural with such joie de vivre is newcomer Lily Collins. Her eyebrows deserve a golden popcorn just for existing (Like Hailee's too!), but instead of doing an ornate updo, she just lets loose and allows her rich tendrils to shine. Just a little liner and a nude lip, and she bypasses the inner-outer eyeliner overdose that simply won't die. Once again the nude lip and flowing hair keeps us focused in all the lovely places.

Girls are fantastic and they smell lovely and whatnot, but when a supremely well-dressed, handsome dude takes the stage, there's nothing like a good long ogle. As soon as we see Blake Lively or Emma Stone hit the carpet we are sent fluttering about looking for dress names or designers or what shoes we would wear when we steal her style, but guys like Ryan Reynolds just freeze us, point blank, like our brains have been removed from our heads and set in jars on our bedside tables. Here are the seven dudes that kept us transfixed—with both their dead-on clothing choices and the amazing genetic eye candy with which they've blessed us.

Andrew Garfield's buttons are really what we are here to talk about. The Social Network star has been charming us left and right with his sweet geeky looks and affable, self-deprecating charm, but then he steps out adorned with these perfectly tarnished little cherries on top of an already adorable maritime ensemble and kills us. Oh, AND yes, he wore navy blue and black and successfully because THIS is how your dress pants should fit.

Ashley Benson in Matthew Williamson, Lil' Mama in Sherri Hill encrusted dress, and Shay Mitchell in a short, metallic sequin dress, all at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards in Universal City, California, on June 5, 2011.

Like red carpet disco balls, these gals didn't just wear sequins: They wore metallic-colored, glitter-shard-coated frocks that seemed simply rolled in all of the amazing things that make an event like this fantastic. Gold flecks, crystal bits, and confetti-like details appeared en mass last night at the MTV Movie Awards, and these ladies quite literally put on the ritz and it actually looked quite lovely.

Young Ashley Benson from the fairly addicting "Pretty Little Liars" rocked a Matthew Williamson with sequin embellishments in a warm copper, showing that metallics can be done without getting all shiny. Then Lil' Mama, who looked like she played "Katamari" in dark crystals with some bangin' accessories, took the shiny shard trend to the edgy extreme in a black encrusted strapless by Sherri Hill (please note: the killer cuff doesn't look overdone because everything else of hers is perfectly straight and to the point). As if sequins and bling wasn't glamorous enough, Miss Shay Mitchell (also of "Pretty Little Liars") came through with a sleeveless minidress in a shiny, textured body-con cut. She scores in a traditional shape with an intricate pattern.

Emma Stone arrives to the 2011 MTV Movie Awards.
Photo: Getty Images

Gosh, look at Emma Stone. Head to toe. Head to toe. She is a lovely burst of citrus, rounded out by her gorgeous, newly red hair (who but she pulls off cheerful, all-American gingerhood with such aplomb?). Here's a quick rule for all to follow: When in doubt, pair black with a blast of fresh color. Not suggesting that Emma is ever in doubt per se, but she made sure to knock her look right out of the theater (and into the MTV Best Dressed Annals) with a Bottega Veneta layered frock. Layer one: lacy, mysterious goodness with a floral pattern and black, pleated goodness with a cinched bow at the waist as a bit of a treat. Layer two: orange creamsicle-colored bodysuit with just the right amount of color peeking out as a little fruit-flavored surprise. And to keep the color quotient up, girl brought out all the right accessories, including our award for best nails.

Kristen Stewart keeps it together with safety pins at the MTV Movie Awards
Photo: Getty Images

Does Kristen Stewart make every, single, isolated styling decision on her own? Probably not. What megastar does? But does she ALWAYS stick to her aesthetic guns? Heck yes. The girl is the business when it comes to complementing hard edges with sophisticated silhouettes and she isn't afraid to let the clamoring Twi-hards and the paparazzi know it. Check out her 2009 Movie Awards look: the gal walked the red carpet in Chucks, a extended finger to the world of towering pumps and heels. She's grown a bit since then (as indicated by her/our obsession with Proenza Schouler) and she's even known to be shod in the occasional Christian Louboutin, a trade we completely support. (Hey, we don't mind flats, and we like the no-nonsense look of the black, executive-type heel she is working tonight.) And then, guys, there's the matter of her dress. The dress.

Ginnifer Goodwin goes pale with her pixie cut at the Met Gala, Kelly Rowland has purple peepers at the Billboard Awards, Katy Perry stays bright on the Grammy red carpets.

We'd like to think the Movie Awards are thee premiere red carpet event of the summer, and it's especially excellent to see stars getting their laid-back game on right in the L.A. heat. The guys and the gals both get a little more funky on our red carpet, and after perusing the awards show trends of the last few months, we have some Technicolored predictions to make about the beauty vibe at the Gibson Amphitheatre. When competing with idols such as Kristen and James or Selena and Justin, one must come most correctly: So from poppy pastel eyes and lips that can be seen for miles, we've got our beauty trend picks laid out for Sunday night.

Our girl Kristen Stewart blew our minds when Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez (of the incredibly chic, totally New York label Proenza Schouler) named the Twilight princess their newest inspiration. All eyes focused on her for the Met Gala, where she showed up in a sizzlin' hot floor-length dress made by the duo, proving that she is not a whole lot like her wallflower of a character, Bella. So with the MTV Movie Awards allowing A-listers to exercise their sartorial chops, will Kristen come back with another Proenza creation? Here’s what we think:
