Pharrell

If 2014 has taught us anything it's that where there's an awards show, there's Pharrell in an outfit destined to inspire a parody Twitter account. Say hello to @PharrellsUggs, the latest addition to growing group that includes @Pharrellshat and @PharrellsShorts. After winning Video of the Year for "Happy," Pharrell took to the stage in a pair of Fair Isle Uggs. This surprised a lot of people on Twitter but what else would you expect from the person who made shorts acceptable on the Oscars red carpet? Pharrell's just doing Pharrell and staying true to his Etsy-chic, cozy style.

Neymar

Worth the fine, TBH.
Photo: Getty Images/Blueman

You got to hand it to Neymar. Aside from being Brazil's star player and all, he's a master of his appearance. Not only has he invented his own kind of mohawk, he also showed up at his team's first World Cup game with a new frosted-tip boy band 'do–a look that almost overshadowed his playing. Now he's getting people talking once again with another aesthetic choice: his underwear.

We thought that elaborate hairstyles were the best way for players to show off their personalities, but, um, we somehow totally forgot about what's on under their uniforms. FIFA, the organization that governs the World Cup, isn't pleased with Neymar after he exposed the waistband of his non-officially-sponsored underwear (yes, that's a real thing) at the end of last Monday's Brazil vs. Ghana match. The offense is even fineable.

Beyonce

Crazy in love, y'all.
Photo: @riccardotisci17 Instagram

When we first saw the spectacular lineup for Beyonce and Jay Z's On the Run wardrobe, we just had one question: Where's the Givenchy? Thankfully, it only took 12 hours for fashion house head Riccardo Tisci to answer that question with a few Instagrams. The couple's BFF and frequent collaborator—see also: Watch the Throne artwork, and Beyonce's tour wardrobe and Met Gala dresses from the past couple of years—is responsible for at least two creations on this tour.

The black and white American flag dress Beyonce wears is one of Tisci's designs. TBH, I never considered the possibility that our country's flag could make for such a stunning bustle but leave it to Bey and T. to pull off the seemingly impossible. But also, Beyonce can literally make wallpaper look good.

World Cup

WE LOVE YOU TEDDY!
Photo: ESPN

If you’ve paid attention to a minute of U.S. soccer this World Cup, or even scrolled through mentions of it in your social feeds, chances are you’re familiar with “Teddy Goalsevelt,” the stan-turned-meme Chicagoan Mike D’Amico who’s attended each game dressed up as Teddy Roosevelt. Over the course of the tournament, he’s practically become the face of American soccer. As you might expect, his backstory is just as good as his costume. After being laid off in September, D’Amico started freelancing and surprisingly found himself with more disposable income. Then in November, he received an unexpected email from the American Outlaws—the biggest U.S. Supporter group—offering him a coveted spot in their vacation package. He hadn’t even planned on attending the World Cup but, with some extra cash socked away, he jumped at the opportunity.

Coincidentally, the agency D’Amico now works for is called Cavalry, a name Teddy Roosevelt definitely would have approved of. “I hadn’t even pieced that together but their logos are trumpets and swords,” he says via Skype from a hotel room in Recife, fresh off of giving a pep talk alongside Will Ferrell at a supporter pre-party for today’s game against Germany. The list of chance events that brought him to this moment—and to putting together his Teddy Roosevelt costume—runs long. “We could do this interview for hours and I still wouldn’t be able to go through all of the bizarre serendipitous events,” he says. We at least got through a handful of them in our talk. Here, D’Amico explains the inspiration behind his costume, how it’s holding up in the heat, and counting Will Ferrell as one of his fans.

MTV STYLE: How was the pre-party for the U.S. vs. Germany game?

No big deal. I just got to hang out with Will Ferrell. Just another Wednesday.

Was he familiar with your Teddy Roosevelt costume?

Yeah, I’m just finding that out from the other U.S. soccer guys. They were in a van with him on the way over and told him I’d be there and he was like, “The guy from TV? That’s the guy I was just talking about!” He was excited and he was so nice. He went out of his way to involve me in everything. We went out on stage at the U.S. soccer party and gave a little pump-up speech to the guys there. It was a blast.

Tell me about the origins of this costume. Did it start out as a Halloween costume?

[Laughs] No, not even. It’s made its debut at the World Cup. I travel a lot for U.S. soccer, at least domestically—this is my first international soccer trip—and there’s always guys at the games that are dressed a little more interestingly than everyone else. There’s always the colonial soldier, the guy in the WWI outfit with the aviators and pilot helmet, and everyone always eats that stuff up. So I thought, If I’m traveling halfway around the world spending all of this money and time, this is probably the time for me to step up my game. As soon as I decided I was going to Brazil, I decided I would do something different. I started thinking about different cultural icons and was also thinking about the fact that I had nine months of beard growth—it was gigantic—so I knew I could dye or carve it into something. One day, Teddy Roosevelt just kind of hit me. I thought it was perfect because I was going to Brazil and was going to be in the jungle. It’s everything that Teddy Roosevelt would have been interested in. If you want someone leading your team and fans into battle in the jungle, it’s Teddy Roosevelt.

Katy Perry

If you thought festival fashion had already peaked, think again! Katy Perry just extended the shelf life of the trend with her second collection for Claire’s, dubbed “Wildflower,” which will provide endless floral options for the Coachella set. Unlike “Roar,” her first collection for the store, “Wildflower” isn’t as much inspired by Katy’s songs as it is by the bohemian style that’s come to dominate music festivals—and she should know. By now, Katy’s pretty much a pro at Coachella, having attended for the past four years. Here we were thinking that she just went for the parties and music. Apparently, Katy was also doing some field research.

World Cup

The 2014 World Cup isn't even into the knockout rounds yet and it's already gifted us with a whole bevy of things to talk about: crazy hairstyles, Rihanna's fandom, and all of the stylish gear it has inspired. Now designer soccer balls can be added to that list. Pharrell, Rick Owens, Roberto Cavalli, Missoni, and more put their individual spins (LOL, get it?) on the 2014 Adidas World Cup soccer ball for the Gol de Letra Foundation, an organization that benefits Brazilian youth.

Rihanna

World Cup fevaaaa.

It's no secret that Rihanna is a huge fan of the World Cup. Have you seen her Twitter feed recently? In between pictures of her niece, practically all she writes about is soccer. We can’t say that RiRi is responsible for the surging interest in soccer, but there’s no denying her influence. So, imagine our excitement when she tweeted herself in a pair of Brazil shower slides this weekend.

Pharrell

Not gonna lie, when we first heard that Pharrell was teaming up with G-Star Raw and Bionic Yarn on a denim collection made from recycled ocean plastics, we struggled a little to visualize the results. [Insert shrug emoji here.] But now we can safely say it sounds a lot crazier than it looks! G-Star just released the first look at the collection, which drops in September, and, TBH, you’d never guess the origins of the pieces. Ironically, the collection looks even more luxe than any other clothing collab Pharrell has done in recent memory.

Greetings from Brazil! For the past few days, I’ve been hanging in Salvador, paddleboarding at the beach, listening to a whole lot of bossa nova, and, oh yeah, watching more soccer than I ever have in my life. Honestly, I’m a World Cup newbie, and as a style writer, one of the things that’s caught my eye is all of the attention to HAIR. Past all of the splashy kicks and colorful World Cup kits (that’s sports code for "uniform"), I’ve learned that hair is really where the players stylistically ~flex~. And there’s been a whole lot of flexing. A week into soccer’s quadrennial tournament, every team has played at least once, so we’ve gotten a full look at all of the hairstyles. Here’s the best of the World Cup hair.

NEYMAR — BRAZIL

Neymar, who’s emerged as the face of the Brazil World Cup, made his hair his signature well before the tournament began. But yesterday, he upgraded his mohawk-bangs-hybrid for his team’s game against Mexico with some Aaron Carter- and Lance Bass-esque frosted tips. I’m guessing Neymar is a fan of '90s boy bands?

DANI ALVES — BRAZIL

World Cup

IMO, Brazil’s whole team pretty much kills it in the hair department. I hope they got a group discount at the salon when Neymar and Dani Alves showed up to get their bleach on. But Alves, who also debuted a blonde 'do at yesterday’s game, might have had different inspo in mind, like America’s Next Top Model’s Jay Manuel and No Doubt’s Tony Kanal. Or maybe they were just paying tribute to the 1998 World Cup when all of Romania’s team showed up with bleached hair.

Kanye West, North West

SO QT.
Photo: @kimkardashian Instagram

Yesterday North West (aka #WORLDSMOSTTALKEDABOUTBABY) had her first birthday, and it looks like she's already taking after her dad in the fashion department. Not that we're surprised: North's ever-expanding wardrobe has been stocked with designer duds since she was only a few months old thanks to all of Kanye's designer friends. But this Father's Day, which coincided with her birthday, North showed off a new side of her steez that was less fancy and more functional. Kim Instagrammed North napping alongside Kanye in a cozy heather gray tee that matched her dad's, making our collective hearts melt. We still haven't gotten over how utterly adorable the photo is, but anytime there's matching, our brains automatically flips the "Who wore it better?" switch.
