Kanye West Paris Fashion Week

God. I wonder what Kanye West is feeling right now given that I am deeeeepleted that weeks of wild speculation and rune casting and Google alerting and Twitter/Tumblr stalking has finally come to an end with the unveiling of his first womenswear collection at Paris Fashion Week. He probably feels pretty great. The thing about this show is that opinions will diverge and reviews will run the gamut from effusive to scathing because there is no way to sequester the entire world from the Internet and this man's megafame. Dicey territory from which to judge a show. Plus, nevermind the crazy levels of clout in his front row that draws even more attention.

According to this Associated Press report from the scene, Kanye was nervous, repeating, "I'm so scared," after which he stated that he just wanted to end the "celebrity designer" qualifier.

In attendance were a number of notable bold names--Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfeld, Azzedine Alaia, Olivier Theyskens, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Lindsay Lohan, Terry Richardson, Jared Leto. Ciara, who sat front row and wore a fox fur stole (solidarity?), also told MTV News how much she empathized with the level of scrutiny Kanye was under. "It was definitely one of the most talked-about events [of Paris Fashion Week]," she said. "This doesn't happen every day, and to see someone like Kanye, who aspires to succeed in fashion, to get so much respect and cross over like this, it was monumental. It was an historic moment."

Jeremy Scott who was also prominantly placed mentioned how the collection echoed Kanye's impeccable taste as a student and genuine fan of design.

To wit: there are definitely echoes of influence throughout. Granted, this was overall, a collection of American sportswear. Clean. Marketable (though we'll know more once we see the pricepoint). And sexy. But there were whispers of Issey Miyake in the delicate pleats (both amorphous and sculpted), hints of Helmut Lang in the stark simplicity and palette but there was nothing that displayed too much of a barrier to entry in terms of silhouettes. We are not talking 1,800 bolts of shantung and 4,300 fish scales for a hat with a veil here.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt for 'Blackbook' Magazine.
Photo: Courtesy of 'Blackbook'

OK. Couple of things about Joseph Gordon-Levitt that you should know: a) he is the man b) I met him at the 50/50 New York premiere (the movie comes out TODAY! Go see it, it rules [truly]) and he was VERY NICE (read: handsome! Also, well dressed. AND way taller than you'd think!) and c) I interviewed him over the phone five years ago as he strummed a ukulele in the background and my relationship with string instruments has not been the same since. Seriously.

ANYWAY, whatever, I know it's weird for some OLDS among us that JGL was Tommy in '3rd Rock...' and that tiny-infant-baby-child in 'Angels In The Outfield' and there are certain things you can't un-know like what he looks like as an 11-year-old with Hanson hair BUT it's been a while and he is definitely a man now (see: suits in Inception and for a couple of us the Cobra Commander costume omnom...).

To further the point (haha I think I am maybe making the point that if you're a hot dresser you're a grownup? IDK falalalalalala logic fallacies... I AM STICKING TO IT) this issue of Blackbook Magazine, in an editorial aptly entitled 'Introducing the Many Faces of Joseph Gordon-Levitt,' shows the California native in what has to be the most EXPERT layering with mixed prints and jumbled textures and interesting silhouettes that I've seen since the Japanese stormed asymmetry and polka dots in the early '90s. Really really.

SO DAMNED BOSS.

Lady Gaga Breakfast at Tiffany's

Lady Gaga at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on Sept. 24, and the "Breakfast at Tiffany's" movie poster in 1961.

Look it, we're not CRAZY, we're not saying there's anything wrong with looking like Audrey Hepburn of all people. What I'd GIVE to be so lissome, long-necked, and doe-eyed. What's shocking about Lady Gaga's getup in Vegas for the iHeart Radio Music Festival is that it's SO ELEGANT yet REGULAR. Three-quarter length gloves, diamonds, a two-piece retro skirt-suit situation (possibly in WOOL CREPE??? < -- the cotton twill of the "ladies who lunch" set [whaaa??!]) with a tastefully demure clutch and suede platform pumps (that are still WILD FIERCE).

Britons love their millinery like they love eating canned legumes swimming in phlegmy tomato sauce on toast. And while we do maintain that Philip Treacy is a genius (despite the giggle-fracas stirred by Princess Beatrice's hat at the Royal Wedding), we gotta say, some of the headgear from London Fashion Week (which ended yesterday) is beyond HILARZ. Let's take a gander at some of our favorites.

ANGRY BIRDS AT GILES

At Giles (sidenote: I LOVE Giles Deacon and consider him to be a STAR, and I loved his work at JCDC), we saw a parade of feathers and some truly exceptional, dramatic silhouettes and interesting layering techniques. But this? This writhing, blood-red swan atop some poor model's dome after all that avian imagery we've had for the last YEAR from Black Swan? It feels a little done. Totally makes me wish it were a puffin.

Ariel Winter at the 2011 Emmy Awards.
Photo: Getty Images

The Emmys were last night. A grip of scarlet, floor-length gowns traversed the red carpet. Hair ranged from updo to beach waves. Also, purple was a thing, and we were maybe confusled and beweirdtrested by Gwyneth Paltrow's Pucci dress that was both gorgeous and inappropriate. We did not LOVE Amy Poehler's dress but loved absolutely everything else about her. Coach Taylor won an award because he deserved one for being THE BEST (CLEAR EYES, FULL HEARTS, CAN'T LOSE!), and Modern Family swept the comedy category. On the topic of Modern Family, here's where things get delicate and dicey for us.

First of all, the show is great. The characters are highly developed and believable, and we love the underdog, smarty-pants awesomeness of Alex Dunphy. We maybe totally relate to not being the cute one or, more appropriately, the one who doesn't get cute until college and then MAKING MINCEMEAT out of all the girls who developed early and, let's face it, peaked too early too. So it's hard to make a point of not liking Ariel Winter's dress from last night. Especially since, we get it, it's "grown up" and supposed to be like, "Oh snap, who is this stunning butterfly in place of this squirmy, hairy grub-looking thing that was RIGHT HERE next to this gnarly dried up, discarded pupa husk...," but instead it makes us feel uncomfortable. We think this dress is inappropriate. There's too much conspicuous boobage. Too much form-fittingness. Which sucks because the dress itself is pretty and frilly, and she does honestly look otherwise beautiful.

Not to sound like the wizened old hag that I absolutely empirically am BUT I just feel like a dress for a 13-year-old girl (woman? IDK lady? GAH) should be more playful. Especially when the contrast between having braces and a peekaboo cutaway at the mamm glands makes me want to blind every perv-bot dude in the ogling radius. Ariel, you're frickin' amazing, now please go put on a sweater. Or a wrap. Or some chain mail. Thank you.

Annabel and Enoch
Photo: Sony Pictures Classics

New York Fashion Week is over, and for the sartorially minded among us who are not jetting off for London, Paris, and Milan and maybe feeling a bit bereft, a wee smidge depressed not to have our eyeballs constantly inundated with gorgeous togs, look no further than a movie coming out this weekend called Restless. Directed by the spectacular Gus Van Sant with brilliant, sensitive performances by Henry Hopper and Mia Wasikowska, the film is a quiet, nuanced project that focuses on the burgeoning love between Enoch and Annabel in the face of death.

I KNOW, I KNOW, sounds like a complete bummer, and why would I offer this up to soothe your blues, etc., etc. But the thing you should know about this truly sweet and startlingly light project is that the costume designer is a man by the name of Danny Glicker (whose work you will have seen in Transamerica, Thank You For Smoking, Milk, and Up In The Air), and he is nothing if not a trove of style gems. Prepare for a #longreads nerd-out session, the likes of which have never before been seen on MTV Style. I love this man and strongly suggest you read all eleven-bananzillion words in our Q&A. Trust me, learning feels good on the eyeballs too.

The Blonds Spring 2012 New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

BUNNIES at New York Fashion Week! The Blonds x Playboy is so peanut-butter and chocolate in the PERFECT ratio. Or caramel and sea salt. Or the toasty crook of a still-sleeping boy's arm that you can lock your shoulders into as you steal all the covers thereby waking him up but dropping into a REM-state slumber that you can't be jostled awake from. You know, good stuff (LOL can you tell we're dying for food and companionship on this our FINAL DAY of Fashweek?). The three-year collaboration between the spectacular, flaxen-haired duo, Phillipe and David Blond (who are responsible for outfitting Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus and Beyoncé) and the Haus of Hefner (they dress The Playmate of the Year) culminated in last night's show in New York's Meatpacking District in a disco ball blowout of gobsmackingly MEGA proportions.

The impossibly leggy designer and model Phillipe Blond opened and closed the show in a dazzling display of phosphorescent awesome, and though attendees tittered impatiently under what felt like diner heat lamps, we quickly learned that the mini floodlights made every shard and sequin SPARKLE to where even the most jaded fash-weary amongst us gasped. Face. Melt.

Jeremy Scott

Jeremy Scott backstage at his Spring 2012 show.
Photo: WireImage

It was all about flyover-state style (or is it hayseed chic?) for Jeremy Scott at New York Fashion Week this afternoon. We're talking ENORMO, straight-up TUMBLEWEED-sized bouffants at the crown that ended in little ringlets and smatterings of freckles drawn in at the models' T-zones. Blessedly the glam squad left Andrej Pejic's porcelain complexion unadulterated (seriously, we're talking GLOWING skin that looks like it's comprised of a trillion little LED lights), but even with über-stylized hair and makeup the clothes would not be upstaged. Obviously, since we're talking Jeremy Scott.

Milk Studios was BEYOND bustin' at the seams with sparkly faces. MTV Style favorite Kat Graham was in attendance (wearing the designer and Gasoline Glamour shoes), as was Sky Ferreira, Cory Kennedy (the L.A. set always reps strong at Scott), Paper Mag's Mickey Boardman, Michael Stipe, Leigh Lezark, Ellie Goulding, and, well, basically everyone who you'd expect to be at this show.

SURE, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE FASHION?

Lady Gaga in New York on Sept. 13.
Photo: Getty Images

While we're not one to bad-mouth (already starting off with a LIE...this is going GREAT...) any artist's creative endeavors, we have to admit some relief that Lady Gaga has returned to her more DRAMATICFASHION-y ways. It's not as if we were hating on Jo Calderone, but we missed the Gargantua hair and her trip-trapping across New York in 42-inch heels whilst wearing 18 bolts of vintage LACROIX SILK SHANTUNG that had previously been housed in a marble mausoleum only to be exhumed by Nicola Formichetti and three Italian castrati virgins and draped onto mother monster's tiny frame for a single photo. We missed the EXTRA.

So you can only imagine how thrilled we are to have Lady Gaga back in her full bananimalcrackers regalia, boasting not only an enormous beehive-in-the-wind blowout that makes us smile about our other FAVORITE style GODDESS Daphne Guinness (we are so grateful that these people exist) but with the teased-within-an-inch-of-its-life, spun-sugar hair masterpiece spray-painted (in a highly Stephen Sprouse-ish manner) with "F***." Mostly, because we enjoy saying it SO MUCH. Mostly, because we're children.

Daphne Guinness, Carine Roitfeld, and Jared Leto at the Westway in NYC.
Photo: Courtesy of Terry Richardson's Tumblr

Sweet succotash on a stick, what words could I POSSIBLY conjure to add anything to this photo? Terry Richardson muse, beloved handsome-machine and 30 Seconds To Mars frontGOD Jared Leto is locked in an embrace with non other than former French Vogue EIC, Chanel stylist, and current something-something ambassador/"guest editor" of Barneys New York, Carine Roitfeld. AND not only is the whippet-thin, glamour-puss matching Jared's smoldering gaze to the bajillionth degree, she is also wearing ruched lamé fabric, which kiiiiiinda blows my mind with its retro ballsiness.

And, as if Jared's reliably gravity-defying coif + sleeveless John Lennon-homage "New York" tee wasn't enough FASHUN, we get the added bonus of none other than style icon THEEEEEEEE DAPHNE GUINNESS photo-bombing that ish, positively duh-ripping in bejeweled lace and making a priceless face that does wonders for her whole exotic bird-of-prey steez that she NAILS with majesty every time. Thanks, New York Fashion Week. You make us want to ram a pen in our tear ducts from fatigue but you also make us happy.

I love these two as a couple. What a festive way to celebrate two important events in their life. Mariah looks like a dream.
