Madonna

Madonna has a few "axes to grind" with society, and she aired her grievances last night at the 2013 GLAAD Awards before presenting Anderson Cooper with the Vito Russo award. However, her political commentary began before she stepped onto the GLAAD awards stage. It started when she got dressed to go to the event and slipped into a stylized, grown up-sized Boy Scouts of America uniform. Madonna wore the uniform as a form of protest, signaling her stance on the organization's notoriously homophobic beliefs.

Thanks to the 2013 mtvU Woodie Awards, yesterday was a HUGE day for the MTV family here in Austin. Situated smack dab in the midst of the SXSW music festival, so many of our favorite artists took the stage in the name of MTV. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Haim, Joey Bada$$, Trinidad James and so many more straight-up killed it yesterday, musically and sartorially.

MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS

We're pretty consistently impressed with Macklemore's performance style, but this Southwest blanket vest situation has to be Top 10 so far. I mean, HAI, the weave of this thing is unbelievably festive. Mack took the sleeveless topper off mid-way through his set, but Ryan Lewis and the laundry list of guest features kept the fashion action coming with Wanz in a red three-piece suit and printed blazer, Mary Lambet serving retro '50s steez, and Schoolboy Q rocking a Supreme hockey jersey and printed bucket hat.

Whichever way you cut it, Jennifer Lawrence is a winner. Whether we're speaking in traditional terms about her 2013 Oscars Best Actress in a Leading Role statuette, about her endearingly colorful press room commentary after falling on stage, or even her fit-for-a-princess Dior Haute Couture gown, J.Law has won over our hearts by being simultaneously talented beyond her years, drop-dead gorgeous, and charmingly affable. We could go on for days about all the reasons we love the spunky beauty, but being that fashion is our primary domain, we're laser-focusing on that. More specifically, we're taking a long, hard look back on Jennifer's exemplary red carpet fashion throughout this 2013 winter awards season. LEGGO!

Jennifer was breath-taking and regal at the 2013 Oscars in this ballerina pink Dior Haute Couture gown. The large trumpeted skirt may have been to blame for her little spill, but J.Law handled that little mishap with grace and still looked beautiful and poised for press room questions. Just the day before, Lawrence took a break from her red carpet Dior (she is the newest face of Miss Dior handbags, after all), accepting her Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook in striking angular Lanvin.

Emmanuel Riva may have snagged Best Actress honors at the 2013 British Academy Film Awards, but Jennifer found a winner (color) in this gem-laden baby pink Dior Haute Couture. Lawrence almost didn't show to the 2013 SAG Awards thanks (or rather, no thanks) to a bout with pneumonia, so you can imagine the gasps of approval from the MTV Style frontlines when she not only showed up but totally turned it out in navy, strapless Dior Haute Couture with a bold red lip and flawless side-swept waves. AND won for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. Preach.

The Oscars are the biggest night in movies, to be sure, but they're also definitely one of the biggest nights in fashion as well! Who doesn't love seeing their favorite movie stars on the top of their game, both professionally and sartorially?! We absolutely do. We had two of MTV's style experts, MTV News' Christina Garibaldi and MTV Style Editor-At-Large Mary HK Choi weigh in on their favorite moments on last night's red carpet, from Jennifer Lawrence's romantic Dior gown to Anne Hathaway's Prada wardrobe malfunction. Were the best accessories on the carpet K.Stew's crutch (and accompanying crutch holding secret agent) and Quvenzhané Wallis' puppy purse? Watch the video below to find out all that and more!

We're a little woozy from all of the Oscars excitement last night, and we didn't even go, let alone win a coveted statue, so we can hardly even imagine how our award winning actresses are feeling today. Probably a little more than woozy, but we're sure they're also elated. Bravo, ladies! But we're not just applauding their achievements, we're also applauding their sartorial success. Not only did all of these women make it onto our 10 Best Dressed List, but they also managed to wear not one but TWO amazing dresses, by changing before the Vanity Fair party that night. Ok so maybe Anne Hathaway wins the big prize because she actually wore THREE dresses last night, but we're not splitting hairs here. When was the last time we got to wear an incredible designer gown, you ask? Yeah...we're not gonna answer that.

ANNE HATHAWAY IN PRADA, ARMANI, & CUSTOM SAINT LAURENT

It was really hard to decide who would lead this post, but with three Oscars looks, Anne Hathaway had a clear advantage. She started the night in a now-infamous pink Prada gown, which had her, shall we say, standing out in the crowd a little more than perhaps she would have intended? Sorry, we had to. But really, we think it was a combination of the dress' darts and the chilly LA air that was the cause for Anne Hathaway nipplegate, and that really, all press is good press right? And who doesn't want to join Angie's leg in infamy? For her second look of the night, Anne took to the Oscars stage in a draped, glittering Armani gown to perform a medley of songs from Les Miserables along with the rest of the cast. The dress features tiered cream fabric with glinting royal blue gems on the neck and hemlines, and, while it keeps to the empire waisted silhouette that Anne is fond of, it's a much more relaxed look than the structured Prada. For her final look of the night, Anne stepped out in custom powder blue Saint Laurent at the Vanity Fair party. She is understandably beaming with her well-deserved statue, and she herself is statuesque in the wholly unstructured column gown with a densely beaded neckline.

The movies! The dresses! The makeup! The hair! Oh my god, isn't awards season over already!? The Oscars is the grand finale of award shows and I can't even imagine how sick everyone is of putting on Spanx and walking in 6 inch heels. It must be very difficult to put on couture Dior and have your makeup done, so thank you, ladies of Hollywood, for rallying on last night!

Here are some of my favorite beauty looks from the Oscars, and how to get the key aspects of those looks.

AMANDA SEYFRIED

Choosing a colorful eye makeup is super risky for an event like the Oscars; Amanda Seyfried's lavender shadow is an example of how it works! It looks especially beautiful with her bright blue eyes. The trick to wearing colorful eye makeup is to keep everything else on the face light. In other words, don't do this with red lips, you'll look like a clown! To get Amanda's shadow try NARS 413 BLKR Duo.

1. Use a light shimmery shade over the entire lid.
2. Apply the dark shade in NARS 413BLKR Duo lightly along the lash line of the outer corners of the eyes.
3. Apply the light purple shade into the crease and into dramatic wings.
4. Apply the light purple shade lightly under the bottom lashes as a drop shadow.

A round of applause for the gentlemen of Hollywood, everyone! The Oscars red carpet is all about the dresses, so much so that sometimes our swoon-worthy leading men get left in the dust just a little bit. Is there anything better than a man in a suit though? I mean yeah, looking at beautiful gowns fills our little hearts with joy, but there's another part of our hearts reserved solely for a dashing gentleman in a crisp bow tie. I mean right? Some of MTV Style's biggest crushes were out on the carpet tonight, and it was hard to focus on picking our our ladies' top looks while we were busy writing our initials inside of hearts with theirs on our notebooks *throws "MD hearts JGL"-covered notebook under desk*. But seriously, you might think all suits are created equal, but pairing the right cut and fit with the man is super important and not actually that easy. Behold! Our favorite gentlemen of the 2013 Oscars!

JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT

I'm kind of a creep about Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He has such kind eyes. And he seems so funny and nice. But this isn't about that, this is about his TUXEDO! The Lincoln actor went super classic for his turn down the red carpet, in a black tux with a classic bow tie and white shirt with contrasting black buttons. Joseph also accessorized his look with his signature red button, which is for his organization HitRecord. All pretty cute right? You have no idea how cute it gets. The actor revealed that he didn't actually tie his own bow tie, but co-star Sally Field did it for him in the car on their way to the awards! It doesn't get much better than that, guys, it really doesn't. With just the right pleat in his pants, structure in his jacket and shine on his shoes, we have to say JGL is killing the suit game, and our hearts at the same time.

Michelle Obama

There were a lot of surprises at tonight's 2013 Oscars, but our favorite has to have been the reveal of Michelle Obama presenting the award for "Best Picture" to Argo. A grinning and bow tied Jack Nicholson introduced his special presenting guest: Madame FLOTUS who appeared via satellite video from the White House. Breaking away from the White House Oscar party, Michelle twirled toward camera wearing a STUNNING Naeem Khan gown covered in zillions of silver beads that glittered in the camera lights.

After a huge (and we mean HUGE) buildup, it seems almost weird to think that the 2013 Oscars are ...over. Crazy, right? But before we get all nostalgic and deal with our impending case of awards season hangover, we've got more important matters to deal with, like the DRESSES (duh). Considering the Academy Awards as an event is basically IT— like Hollywood prom— everyone upped their game in a big way tonight. From Quvenzhané Wallis and her puppy purse all the way to Jennifer Lawrence's stunning Dior gown, we've whittled down the star-studded red carpet into our 2013 Oscars Top Ten Best Dressed Ladies. So you ready for this?! Let's go!

JENNIFER LAWRENCE IN CHRISTIAN DIOR COUTURE

Paging Captain Obvious: it's been a loooong road to the Oscars for Jennifer Lawrence. But after countless interviews, award shows, and even a bout with pneumonia, the Best Actress WINNER (!!) chose THE perfect gown to culminate her Academy Award journey. Crafted by Christian Dior with a dramatic mermaid silhouette, an all-over leaf pattern, and a epic voluminous skirt, J.Law's dress fits her like haute couture glove. She's a superstar on so many levels here, and we can't ever get enough.

We may have come to know Zooey Deschanel for her creative nail art at award shows (from film strips at the Golden Globes to retro TVs at the Emmys), but we were thrown for a loop when she showed up with a brand new HAIR CUT at the Vanity Fair Oscars party after the big show. And we're not just talking a trim, or new bangs. The New Girl star completely chopped her luscious long locks for a sleek and stunning bob, which has been a growing trend for celebs this year.
