Pharrell Williams

Pharrell's "Happy" performance at the 2014 Oscars was backdropped with a giant screen of Despicable Me minions wearing their leader's Vivienne Westwood hat. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, Pharrell was wearing the hat again—THE HAT THAT MEMED THE WORLD. Inspired yet again by Malcolm McLaren's "Buffalo Gals" video, but ramped up a bit for the occasion, this time he copped his classic Adidas track jacket in black leather and a crispy, more formal classic black Buffalo crown. Twitter wondered if the sequined kicks on his feet were Red Octobers, but while they did mirror the all-over crimson of Yeezy's feet, we vote no. We're fairly certain he'd never wear Adidas with Nike at the same time, and we see some telltale triple stripes. He did match his mic and earpieces to his footwear, though, with rubied veneers glimmering like jewelry.

When it was announced earlier today that Lady Gaga would be making an appearance on the Oscars red carpet, we were like, "OMG, YAAS GAGA YAAAS." Then, we waited patiently (and eagerly) for Gaga to roll up. Finally, it happened. And, we must say, it was worth the wait: Gaga went glam. Big time.

Sticking with her preferred lilac and Versace palette, Mother Monster opted for a strapless gown, complete with mirrored embellishments. Note to all the Oscars attendees who are reading this post: if you forgot your mirror, cozy up to Gaga and admire your reflection. It's the perfect lipstick check opportunity, AND you get to talk to Lady Gaga. Win-win, TBH.

Word on the street (and by street we mean Twitter) is that before taking the long walk down the red carpet, Jennifer Lawrence made a pit stop at the McDonald's directly across the street from Hollywood's Dolby Theatre. Hey, this show is LONG and a girl's gotta eat. Thankfully, from what we can tell, it looks like J-Law was able to keep any and all grease stains away from her stunning, strapless Christian Dior (duh) gown. She was not, however, able to stay on her feet, as the actress took yet another tiny tumble (despite telling ABC that she even did a "stair test" before the show) while exiting her limo. At least this time was at a less conspicuous moment?

2014 Oscars

Quick! Someone claim @pharellsshorts because that handle is going to go fast. [Editor's note: ZANGIT! Already taken.] For the Academy Awards, Pharrell Williams pulled the ultimate fake out and hit the red carpet in ~shorts~. The Best Original Song nominee (“Happy”) had been flaunting his now-iconic Vivienne Westwood hat across town leading up to the ceremony in a wide spectrum of colors. Naturally, we expected that he’d reprise its standout Grammys appearance at the Oscars, but Pharrell opted for a Lanvin shorts suit (sans headgear) instead.

Grab a comfortable seat, maybe a few crudités, and a drink, because the 86th Annual Academy Awards are underway. The red carpet has been rolled out, people are stepping on it, it's all goin' down. It's Hollywood's biggest night—time to pull out all the stops. Throughout the past week we've asked a few questions: What hat will Pharrell choose? Will Jennifer Lawrence totally nail it in Dior yet again? What color will Lupita Nyong'o wear? And now, in mere minutes, all our questions will be answered. We are readaaay.

Oscar Dresses

Every dress worn by Best Actress Academy Awards winners.

Best Actress Oscar winners are kind of like the prom queens of Hollywood's high school hierarchy, so what they wear during their crowning moments is obviously a huge deal. That's why we can't get enough of this AMAZING infographic by Mediarun Digital. They decided to create a definitive timeline of every award winners' dress since the first Academy Awards back in 1929, and the result is pretty amazing. Like...can we get this baby in physical poster form?

Sure, many of the Oscars most-anticipated awards are doled out for exemplary acting, but don't forget, it's a night of musical performances, too. Gold statuettes of little bald men are awarded to Best Original Score AND Best Original Song winners, and often, there's time in the ceremony for the nominees to take the stage. As we gear up for Sunday night and the potential return of Pharrell's giant hat *fingers crossed*, we're looking back at some of the best performance outfits in Academy Awards history.

MADONNA IN 1991

Of course, we have to kick this off with Madonna. Arguably THE best Oscars onstage outfit of all time (IMHO), Madge channeled Marilyn Monroe for her performance of "Sooner or Later" from the Dick Tracy soundtrack.
