Just as its name suggets, the Film Independent Spirit Awards—an annual precursor to the Academy Awards which doles out trophies for artier, smaller-budget films—is also a night when Hollywood’s starlets feel free to do their own thing on the red carpet. In terms of fashion, it’s like the Oscars’ cool younger sister (the Skipper to Oscars' Barbie, if you will). Set in a tent on Santa Monica beach, the chill atmosphere usually makes for more interesting semi-casual attire, a departure from the ball gown parade. From rompers to cocktail dresses, here are our favorite looks.

SHAILENE WOODLEY IN LYN DEVON

Shailene Woodley is case in point of the stark contrast between the Oscars and Indie Spirit Awards, where stars wear real clothes—or, at least, clothes most people have a better chance of wearing IRL. The Spectacular Now nominee serves as a tutorial on how to wear a crop top on the red carpet, keeping the trend strong. Her Lyn Devon outfit perfectly balanced out her bare midriff with a tasteful maxi skirt, and majorly complemented her new pixie cut. Best of all: Shailene didn’t look too precious or fussy.

Some things are just made to go together. Peanut butter and jelly. Salt and pepper (also, Salt-N-Pepa). Jeans and T-shirts. Jennifer Lawrence and Dior. As the current face of Miss Dior, J-Law has been wearing the designer almost exclusively as of late. For some, that might start to feel predictable, but somehow this pairing manages to make each outfit more refreshing than the last. Jennifer's red carpet appearances this year have pretty much felt like sitting front row at a Dior couture runway show—and we certainly aren't complaining.

We can't wait to see what Dior creation she might surprise us with at the 2014 Academy Awards, and you better believe we'll be here LIVE on Sunday night to relay the news. To prepare ourselves, we decided to take a look back at the star's relationship with the designer (spoiler alert: it's lasted longer than most Hollywood marriages).

You remember this one. The entire WORLD remembers this one. By now, Jennifer Lawrence's trip up the stairs at the 2013 Oscars is more famous than that year's actual winners. Adorable clumsiness aside, J-Law was simply stunning in the soft ballerina-pink Dior gown. It's a dress befit for a certifiable movie star.

You guys, the 86th Annual Academy Awards are this Sunday. Like, in three days. Do you have your viewing gowns picked out? Have you picked up cheeses for your appetizer spread? Phew. Us, too. In order to mentally prepare ourselves for all the red carpet looks we'll be treated to on Sunday (also, #tbt), we're taking a look at past Oscars' looks—from Angelina Jolie's right leg-baring Versace Atelier gown to Anne Hathaway's nipple-parody-inducing Prada dress, and everything that came before them.

Sure, the Oscars are the crown jewel of awards season fashion as far as the red carpet is concerned, but don't sleep on the Costume Designers Guild Awards. The clothes from your favorite movies and TV shows (and even commercials) deserve love, too, and the CDGAs is where they get it. Being that we're fans of style off and on the screen, we're breaking down this year's biggest winners.

BEHIND THE CANDELABRA

Winner: Behind the Candelabra costume designer, Ellen Mirojnick
What Makes This Wardrobe Rad: It's no secret that we loved (still and will forever love, TBH) HBO's Liberace biopic, Behind the Candelabra. Between Michael Douglas drenched (DRENCHED) in head-to-toe baby pink sequins and Matt Damon swanning out of kidney bean-shaped pools in bedazzled man-kinis, what's not to love, amirite? Liberace is the definition of over-the-top opulence, and BOY, Ellen Mirojnick delivered.

And, while it's hard to tell because Douglas and Damon (AND ROB LOWE) are pictured pulling so many Drakes ("I wear every single chain, even when I'm in the house"), dripping with gold at every hour of the day, I dare say Ellen didn't go too far overboard with the baubles and gems. In a really surprising way, it all feels just right.

There are some things about history that you'll never learn in school. Like, for example, what a modern day rave might have looked like in ancient Egypt. Thankfully, Katy Perry was able to fill in that blank during her performance today at the 2014 Brit Awards. After previewing her Egyptian-themed video for "Dark Horse" last week, Perry had all of Britain bowing down before her when she took the stage as the magical, mystical, totally trippy Queen Katy Patra.

Perry Patra descended upon her (mostly) shirtless subjects aboard a golden chariot, as Egyptian queens do, wearing a high-neck, neon leotard with a coordinating jacket that may or may not have been stolen from the tomb of Isis. (JK, it's all custom-made by Nicolas Jebran, and I seriously doubt color technology was this advanced back then anyway.)

It's no secret that we are HUGE fans of Teen Wolf star Holland Roden's style. After seeing what she wore to sit front row during New York Fashion Week and how she totally nailed hosting MTV.com's Red Carpet Report for the 2013 Movie Awards, we know she knows her #FASHION. We were lucky enough to chat with Holland after the Grammys Red Carpet (and before she hit up the after-party in a gorgeous caped dress) about her fave looks from Chrissy Teigen, Taylor Swift, and more.

Overall, Holland picked Chrissy Teigen as Best Dressed. She admired how put-together she looked and how well her golden gown looked both IRL and on camera. She also lauded Chrissy for wearing designer Johanna Johnson, who is not necessarily a household name yet. Holland also drew a comparison between Chrissy's dress and the evening's big award, saying, "Chrissy looked like a Grammy statue." A glamorous, sequined Grammy statue.

Last night's Grammys telecast was spectacularly fun on its own, but everyone knows that the stars REALLY let loose at the after-parties. There were VIP bashes all over Los Angeles, and we got to see some truly wowza fashion moments. The parties featured everyone from movie stars to television stars to (duh) pop stars showing off their sexier and edgier sides. And while we fully support the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" school of thought, we still loved to see the handful of Grammy attendees who went with entirely new looks for their post-show appearances. Take a look at all of our favorite after-party fashionistas:

So in case you haven't noticed by now, wearing pants on the red carpet is the new black. Iggy Azalea was right in step with the other dress-ditchers when she stepped out in skinny leather pants, a Joy Division T-shirt, and an awesome patterned silk blazer. After stunning in her red carpet Elie Saab gown at the actual Grammys, Iggy deserved to get comfy and casual, and she pulled off her punk-inspired 'fit perfectly.

After the final performance got cut off by the closing credits, after everyone stopped wondering if there was some sort of safety net to catch Pink if she fell from those strings in the air (but seriously, was there?), after Pharrell ran out of things to say on behalf of Daft Punk—there were still a few very *ACHEM* VERY important honors to be handed out. The fashion awards, OBVIOUSLY.

If it were left up to just us, Skateboard P.'s giant Arby's hat would have taken home ALL the awards, so instead, we teamed up with MTV News and put together an expert panel to break down the best and worst looks of the night. Our very own Gaby Wilson repped Team Style and Christina Garibaldi reported for News, alongside US Weekly Fashion Police contributor Chelsea White and #shehashadit blogger (and MTV Style contributor) Jarvis Derrell.

Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, Katy Perry and the 2014 Grammy Awards made beautiful music together. Sorry, John Mayer. You've been replaced. With an inanimate event. Even though Katy didn't win any awards, she basically stole every stylish hour of the show with four different wardrobe changes. (I mean, Daft Punk cleaned up tonight, and I'm pretty sure they only changed helmets twice.) Hour One: Red carpet glamour. Hour Two: Electric performance-wear. Hour Three: Post-performance quick change. Hour Four: After-party glam. But there's WAY more to it than that. Let's break down all the finer details of Katy's big night, shall we?

The 2014 Grammy Awards were all about amazing performances, stunning fashions, and creating wonderful memories that will last us forever. JK, the night was like 99% about Pharrell's hat! And Madonna's hat! And Pharrell's OTHER hat! From the second the stars started to fill out the red carpet, we couldn't help notice that hip headgear was simply everywhere. Take a look at ALL of tonight's millinery masterpieces:

We're going to go ahead and deem Pharrell's hats the real stars of the Grammys. I mean, hellooo. Just LOOK at his red carpet hat, the first one of two he sported this evening. Twitter appropriately exploded as people started drawing comparisons ranging from Smokey Bear to Canadian Mountie to Arby's logo. He changed for his "Get Lucky" performance, opting for a more conservative, albeit equally large and awesome, fedora. But, c'mon, Pharrell rocks no matter WHAT sits atop his beautiful head.
