The Grammys is celebrating its 55th birthday this Sunday, can you believe it? While they might not yet be eligible for a senior citizens discount and probably aren't getting the AARP magazine yet, 55 years is a loooooong time. Both music and fashion have undergone major transformations since their early years, and the last decade has seen a major shift in on-the-carpet styles. With fearless pop stars like Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj not only taking risks with their looks but also collaborating with major designers to do so, the carpet has not only become a place to see what everyone is wearing--it's also become another venue for expression and performance. Of course when I say all this I'm mostly thinking about Lady Gaga's great entrance to the Grammys in 2011, when she was carried down the carpet concealed inside of a giant egg, which she then proceeded to hatch from on stage to perform her song "Born This Way." Gaga's not the only one to elicit some gasps on the carpet, however. Since she was first on the scene we've known Nicki Minaj one to watch for on the carpet, but at last year's look surprised even us. She strolled onto the Grammy carpet draped in a red, vaguely religious looking Versace cloak, with one of the most outrageous accessories in the history of any awards show, ever: a bishop, or cardinal, or other be-robed man of the cloth. With those two iconic, unforgettable moves in our recent red carpet past, it's hard not to wonder who is going to try and top it in 2013. Will it be Rihanna, who is more known for her Grammy memo-violating tailoring than anything else, or Katy Perry, who has worn her share of crazy hats and wacky outfits to other awards shows in the past, but has tended to keep it elegant, not edgy, for the Grammys?

Rihanna rocking killer under curvature of the breast in Armani at the 2012 Grammys.

Here at MTV Style, we subscribe to the to each her own, flaunt what you've got school of thought when it comes to style choices. Not so fond of said philosophy, however, is CBS, the network that will be broadcasting the 55th Annual Grammy Awards live on the east coast this Sunday. In an email with the subject line "55th GRAMMYS: Standard and Practice Wardrobe Advisory" that has been making the rounds on the internet today (first reported via Deadline), someone, who we're going to venture to guess is probably a dude, laid out some ground rules affecting what our favorite ladies can wear on Sunday night. The email reminds us of a puritanical high school dress code, with the assertion that artists and their stylists, and we quote, "please be sure that buttocks and female breasts are adequately covered," among other things being, frankly, pretty hilarious. To elaborate on what they mean by "adequately," the memo goes on to say that "bare sides or under curvature of the breasts is also problematic." Does anyone else feel like they're listening to their principal give a lecture before a high school dance? *Cue Peanuts gang Wah-Wah grownup voice* Also "problematic" are "thong type costumes" and the "bare fleshy under curves of the buttocks and buttock crack." Once you're done chuckling at the phrase "buttock crack," stand beside us in solidarity for side-boob. Speaking of, what exactly are "female breast nipples," as in, "Please avoid sheer see-through clothing that could possibly expose female breast nipples." I mean, duh, we know, but like, do females have other kinds of nipples that we're not aware of (also shudder at the word "females")? Are male breast nipples allowed? Heaven forbid the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Sisqo can't let their shirtless freak flags fly (ok so maybe the dudes being shirtless trend is a little over). And one more thing, when CBS says "Please be sure the genital region is adequately covered so that there is no visible “puffy” bare skin exposure," what exactly is that? That's one of those things where we think we get it but aren't totally sure and we just have to shake our heads. We're tempted to stand up on our soap box with a megaphone and start yelling now. Leave our "female breast nipples" alone! Rihanna, Katy Perry, don't lose sight of who you are. Viva side-boob!

Oh wait ONE more egregious affront to freedom that we just have to mention: "The Network requests that any organized cause visibly spelled out on talent’s wardrobe be avoided. This would include lapel pins or any other form of accessory," which means, no pink breast cancer ribbons, red AIDS ribbons, or American flags on your lapel? Is this all just a set up to get the rebels of the music industry to #OccupyGrammys? It's not like we think anyone is going to take this sitting down (or butt cheeks covered, as it were), but honestly, what does THE MAN want, a pop star uprising? In memory of sartorial freedom from tyranny on the Grammy red carpet, we've put together some of the most surprisingly (and not so surprisingly) memo-violating looks from the past three years after the jump. Look at them while listening to Sarah McLachlan's "I Will Remember You" on repeat.

Last night were the SAG awards, an award show where actors come together to celebrate the year's best movies. Wait a minute, isn't that the Golden Globes? And the Oscars? So, what exactly ARE the SAG awards, because I really have no idea? I'd also like to point out that two nights ago were the Producer's Guild Awards, an event even more mystifying than the SAG awards. Hollywood cannot get enough award shows! But that's ok, it just gives us another excuse to watch attractive people in fancy clothing do those awkward presenting bits and give uncomfortable acceptance speeches. You know you love it.

And of course there's the fashion. Below are some of my favorite beauty looks of the night, along with tutorials on how to achieve the defining piece of each look. Enjoy!

KELLY OSBOURNE

Resident Fashion Police co-host Kelly Osbourne looked stunning. I loved her full glam makeup, complete with perfect red lips and voluminous lashes, but I gotta say, my favorite thing about this girl is her hair. If you at home are thinking about sporting lavender locks, here's an easy way to get them without a professional colorist.

1. Buy some violet hair dye, like Directions. You will notice this looks very dark, don't worry!
2. In a tinting bowl mix a LOT of conditioner (doesn't matter what kind) with just a DAB of the violet dye. Keep adding the violet dye until you have the desired color, you won't need much.
3. Apply to hair and put on a shower cap. You will look really cool at this point.
4. Heat your hair with a blow dryer and wash dye out after about 35 mins.

If you tuned into the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards tonight, then you caught all the adorable stories from stars about their pre-fame days when they first nabbed that game-changing SAG card. But besides Jennifer Lawrence shouting out MTV in her Best Actress acceptance speech (she got her big break in a teaser for My Super Sweet 16) and the mutual lovefest happening in Hollywood's Shrine Auditorium, the SAG Awards also marks the important final push toward coveted Oscar glory. This rush to the finish line was reflected on the red carpet as well, with some of our favorite ladies pulling out all the stops in straight-from-the-runway gowns. From bubblegum pink to a navy moment to a 13-year-old giving us major closet envy (Kiernan, we're talking about you!), we saw it all. And now, we've filtered through and picked our very best dressed of the night in our Top Ten below!

JESSICA CHASTAIN IN ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

Give it up for flame-haired beauty Jessica Chastain to prove there's NO such thing as red overload, even when you're strutting down, yes, a red carpet. The Zero Dark Thirty star and everybody's one to watch this season was a complete stunner in her crimson McQueen gown. The sweetheart neckline is complemented by satin folds at the top, and this striking cherry hue perfectly offsets Jessica's porcelain skin and deep side part (not to mention her ridic Harry Winston necklace!). Immediately after she stepped into the spotlight Twitter basically EXPLODED with comparisons between her ensemble and infamous cartoon vixen Jessica Rabbit, and we're not arguing it one bit. See the resemblance?

Jennifer Lawrence, Amanda Seyfried and Carmen Electra

Just when you think you've seen it all on tonight's SAG Awards red carpet, something suddenly clicks and you realize, "OMG. Wait. Did three people wear almost exactly the same thing or was that just me?" Well, friends, our imaginations weren't running wild—it's totally true. Jennifer Lawrence, Amanda Seyfried, and Carmen Electra all did a full-on Old Hollywood glam transformation by sporting gorgeous, deep-parted blonde side waves, a curve-hugging strapless navy floor-length gown, and a touch of glam jewelry. Jennifer stunned in a simply-striking Dior Haute Couture layered tier column dress paired with a diamond necklace, diamond stud earrings, and diamond band ring. For her beauty game, she wore super dark liner around her lids, a deep burgundy lip, and glossy dark blonde waves. She definitely had the most modern take on the retro-glam look, and, um, did we also mention that she had walking pneumonia? YEAH. I KNOW. *bows down*

Kelly Osbourne SAG Awards Nail Art

Sure, we saw tons of amazing dresses on the SAG Awards red carpet tonight, but did y'all peep those nails? Kelly Osbourne, Anne Hathaway, Kaley Cuoco, Busy Philipps, and Sarah Hyland took their nail game to the next level by decking out their digits with killer designs. Kelly went all-out edgy (heh) by matching her glam rock black, studded Jenny Packham dress with black, heart-shaped tips. (Also, um, hello giant crystal cocktail ring. #need)

lea michele, nina dobrev, freida pinto, sag awards

Actresses at the 2013 Golden Globes may have struck a somber note in a sea of black dresses, but tonight's Screen Actors Guild Awards? AHEM, that's a different story. These gowns are so awesomely bright, we practically have to squint at our screens to get a real look at the highlighter hues on the red carpet—so chalk it up to the warm weather, call it the Chloe Moretz effect, whatever—we're into it. Lea Michele, Nina Dobrev, and Freida Pinto all stepped out in eye-popping gowns, each rocking a unique take on the bubblegum hue with statement details, sleek silhouettes, and peekaboo panels. Sure, Molly Ringwald might have the ~official~ bragging rights to being Pretty In Pink, but these three ladies give her a serious run for her money in these rosy ensembles.

Justin Timberlake in Tom Ford at the 2013 SAG Awards.
Photo: Getty

You KNOW we're beyond obsessed with the return of Justin Timberlake, and feel like "Suit & Tie" is a song made just for us, so you shouldn't be surprised that we were literally swooning when we saw JT step onto the 2013 SAG Awards red carpet this evening. We figured he would go classic for his first-post-lyric-video-suit-wearing occasion, maybe in a black Tom Ford? Oh no, that's too easy for the suit and tie master...JT stuck to Tom Ford but fully committed to being the flyest dude in the red carpet game by opting for a brown and fawn plaid suit, muted brown plaid shirt and navy wool tie. We know what you're thinking: that's a LOT of plaid, and yeah, plaid on plaid on plaid is a major fashion statement, but you know what we're thinking? It's a statement in the best way. Need we even mention his pocket square? That Gatsby hair? Need we? Ok yeah, more on all that after the jump!

Screen Actor's Guild Awards Red Carpet Fashion

Jennifer Lawrence.

Not that we ever needed it or anything, but here's further proof that that Jennifer Lawrence really IS the greatest: despite battling pneumonia and rumors that she'd skip out on tonight's 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards, the star managed to pull through...AND looked incredible, we might add. We've been waiting patiently-not-so-patiently to see if the Silver Linings Playbook star would show up, and let's just say her gorgeous ensemble is TOTALLY worth the crampy fingers and dried-out contact lenses that come from refreshing Twitter and staring at the TV all night long. I mean, does it really get any better than Dior Haute Couture, straight from the Spring/Summer 2013 runways? (Hint: no). Jenn's giving major Old Hollywood vibes tonight in a strapless navy blue gown that's so perfectly formfitting. This subtle mermaid silhouette was MADE for her. With a deep side part and red lips (two big beauty trends of the night) paired with a glittery silver necklace, this girl has officially secured her status as a modern day Audrey Hepburn.
