A English punk soundtrack goes well with just about anything, but especially if you're lucky enough to be blasting it while rocking Karen Walker's boxy jackets, pleated skirts, and the rest of her Fall wares. The New Zealand designer's message came in loud and clear yesterday at her New York Fashion Week runway show, where she took cues from '70s punk rockers The Damned in her aptly titled "New Rose" collection (named after their 1976 single). Art school touches like dripping rose print motifs, highlighter yellow details and zig zag sweaters collided with collegiate staples such as pinafore dresses, slouchy socks and trench coats for an explosion of kooky cool that we want to inject into our closets immediately. Models worked messy ponytails and shaggy, mussed-up bobs as they strutted down the runway to Siouxsie Sioux and The Damned, upping the rebellious rock 'n roll ante in Walker's rad frames.

Mark McNairy

If there's one collection that we consistently want to raid every New York Fashion Week, it's that of the designer godsend Mark McNairy. Hands down. Every season. His knack for refreshing wardrobe stand-bys like t-shirts, chinos, and oxfords (the namesake shirts AND shoes) is incredible. His ability to create pieces that are timeless and true to the McNasty spirit while also pumping out collections that look and feel new every single time is uncanny. We like to think that McNairy does this all with such unwavering success because he is built with a superhuman ability that allows him to pull unabashedly from a wealth of influences, sift it all through his distinct personality and filter of wit, then translate those nuggets of so many nebulous inspirations into one eclectic yet cohesive collection season after season after season.

A$AP Rocky

A$AP Rocky closes the Hood By Air Fall 2013 New York Fashion Week show.
Photo: MTV

We can't say that we explicitly knew that A$AP Rocky was going to be walking in yesterday's Hood By Air New York Fashion Week show, but we definitely had a feeling he'd be there in some major capacity. Rocky reps HBA in a very serious, born-from-blood type of way, from name-checking the label in lyrics — "Hood By Air, man, I started that" — to pilfering the brand's closet for nearly his entire "Long.Live.A$AP" music video wardrobe to creating the runway soundtrack for last season's Spring 2013 Hood By Air fashion show. Dat PMF made his allegiance and unequivocal support of HBA and the line's designer, Shayne Oliver, unmistakably clear by making an unannounced guest appearance, emerging from a cloud of dry ice fog to close out the Fall 2013 show.

Rodebjer

Even if you aren't familiar with Rodebjer quite yet, you soon will be. The Swedish label is gaining traction stateside in its own right for trademark strong silhouettes, luxe materials, and a sense of everlasting ease. Part of this timelessness has to do with designer Carin Rodebjer's upbringing —she grew up in the Swedish countryside— and her rural childhood had influence yet again on the Fall 2013 collection. Taking cues from her home on the island of Gotland, the slouchy trousers, oversized sweaters (with a knitted fringe!), and breezy chiffon dresses came in a color palette of nature-y hues like mud, hazelnut, and raw umber. In other words, these cozy-cute clothes were the perfect complement for the snowy Nemo aftermath happening outside...if we could've worn them straight out off the runway, trust us, we would've.

alexander wang

We really could have used Alexander Wang's Fall 2013 collection today. The weather outside was, as they say, frightful, but just looking at the luxurious furs, gorgeous leather, and cozy-yet-elegant layering on Wang's t-shaped runway made us feel a little warmer. Outfitting each of his models with a rich auburn ponytail, Wang's show seemed to be all about warmth, and it's not just because of the weather in New York right now. Combining a very sophisticated, urbane silhouette, with architectural collars on coats, graceful folds in everything from skin to wool, with unexpected touches like dark aubergine or silver fur, this was not your usual collection. Perhaps trying to send a message about his upcoming Balenciaga debut, Wang presented a confident collection that immediately had both the Twitterverse and the fashion world talking. There were a number of truly unexpected pieces in the collection, the most striking being Wang's opera-length gorilla mittens. Part boxing glove part king kong's paw, the dramatic gloves also come in a shorter, very high fashion rocky, silhouette. While definitely not suited to everyday wear, the gloves create an animalistic feeling, rendering the models both ready to fight and somewhat immobilized. Wang also took an interesting take on one of fashion's most hated shoe shapes: the mule. The fashion nightmare of many an editor (Carine Roitfeld has declared that she would never wear them), the mule is one of the least popular shoes. They appear, though, to be having a comeback, making appearances both that Alexander Wang and at Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony today.

Mara Hoffman

It seems Mara Hoffman lives in a gypset world of eternal sunshine. She's the queen of color and dazzling, well-traveled prints year-round, but it's now, in the dredges of winter, that we appreciate her sunny design disposition most. The collection Mara unveiled today was steeped in corals, cobalts, and ultra fuschias with intricate, symmetrical prints, seemingly influenced by all corners of the world — speckled radials, stained glass motifs, and technicolor zebra stripes. Whether silhouettes were body-conscious or floaty and ethereal, every ensemble on Mara's runway was striking and dramatic. Models were accessorized with metal cap-toe shoes, Pamela Love armor rings, and earring chains draped from lobe to lobe across each model's back and long hair.

Charlotte Ronson

Charlotte Ronson's uncanny ability to capture all a girl's potential moods in a single, cohesive collection makes her shows consistently one of our most-anticipated every Fashion Week. While C.Ronson opted for a presentation this season rather than a runway show, the clothes were nothing short of covetable. The format for the designer's newest collection reveal may be different, most everything else remained constant. PYTs like Angela Simmons and Holland Roden still turned up in droves (even through Nemo's wintery mix!). The looks created by Charlotte were still both strikingly unique yet also ceaselessly wearable. And of course, her twin and reknowned DJ/musician Samantha Ronson flew in from sunny LA to spin her show soundtrack.

Looks from the Rebecca Minkoff show during New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

When a band has the models dancing backstage at T-5 minutes til showtime, you know good things are gonna happen when the curtain rises and the real show finally begins. And that's exactly what went down at Rebecca Minkoff today, when Nashville duo Wild Cub singlehandedly transformed the final runway prep into a groovefest— makeup artists, stylists, and photographers included. After all, the New York designer is no stranger to recruiting bands to spice up the traditional catwalk soundtrack (she's had Theophilus London and THE GOASTT perform in the past), but felt that Wild Cub's clap-happy pop vibe particularly resonated to her Fall collection. "It's one of those weird things when you don't know if anyone is ever actually listening to your music, but Rebecca contacted us a few weeks ago and said she's been playing it in her office," frontman Keegan DeWitt told us. "She said it worked great with her new collection." Rebecca was right. As Keegan and bandmate Jeremy Bullock performed their single "Thunder Clatter" while models paraded in leather separates, pinstripes, and holographic accessories, this music-fashion collision was THE epitome of effortless cool.

ZOMG, you guys. LOOK at the sweatshirt A$AP Rocky Instagrammed himself wearing yesterday. Do you see what that says?!?? It reads, "RAF A$AP" in white, paint stroke lettering. RAF! As in, the immeasurably talented Raf Simons, helm of his own line and new artistic director of Dior. AS IN, the very same Raf Simons of is one of Rocky's absolute favorite designers on the planet.
