Rodarte Goes To The Dusty Outback For Fall

We're rounding the final New York Fashion Week bend and were delighted to be taken on a bit of a road trip courtesy of one of our faves, Rodarte. Sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy always put on a heck of a show and let the clothes do all the talking. As much as we love runway show theatrics, sometimes you just want to sit back and be rendered speechless by a truly fantastic collection, which is what Rodarte promises for fall. Known for their convoluted knits, mishmash prints and cutting techniques, love of horror films, life in Southern California, and friend fans such as Dakota Fanning and Natalie Portman, who both sat front row today along with legendary filmmaker George Lucas (AMAZING), they're also one of the most anticipated shows at NYFW. Their fall collection was inspired by the dusty geography of the Australian outback, and we noticed some 1940s styling, superb coats we'd like to wear now, and a smattering of beautiful dresses fit for the awards carpets. Let's get into this sandtrap of loveliness...

Betsey Johnson Shows London Mod Set To The Beatles

I'm going to be completely honest here, there's not a lot you can show me in the mien of the '60s that won't leave me with a certain fatigue. Betsey Johnson's show last night was winsome in the sense that attendees were dolled up in full BJ regalia (poufy, candy-colored tulle dresses), but few things on the runway felt like important additions to the Betsey Johnson cannon. There were no fluttery, loooong, floral flared catsuits from last season or, like, whatever the new babydoll silhouette is. That said, I am partial to the vertical stripes shown both in her hosiery and this lean shocking-pink trouser suit where the waist is slung low for that throwback mod vibe.

What I did adore was this odd play on the pom beanie and the hoodie. This skintight black sweater with the pom-lined hood is fascinating. It's like a monochromatic, non-Furry-cosplay-ish version of a SpiritHood , and I'm happy to say I'm a huge fan. Another thing I went bananas for is this heart-embroidered coat-dress situation. How much does the visual make you long for a young pre-Sarkozy Carla Bruni? Isn't it just the spitting image? God, I loved her.

Fashion Week LOL: Fowl Play?

So, this happened at New York Fashion Week: A model strutted her stuff on the Vassilis Zoulias runway with an entire bird on her head. So many questions immediately flooded our brains: Did they actually take Portlandia's "Put A Bird On It" segment literally? Was this a fashion-y re-creation of Fabio's famous roller-coaster bird-to-face fiasco? I mean, this chapeau even gives hat muse Isabella Blow a serious run for her money—and she's worn an entire lobster on her head. We may never know the reason behind this poised poultry headpiece, but we definitely could see a fearless lady sporting it at a huge holiday feast. Alice + Olivia Hosts A Monochrome Mod Dinner Party For Fall 2012 Presentation

Nope, you haven't traveled back in time—you've stepped into Alice + Olivia's fall 2012 presentation at New York Fashion Week. The '60s mod meets Beetlejuice collection was filled with bold stripes, black lipstick, and simple silhouettes. We loveloveLOVED the long, skintight black lace dress over a nude slip (because, duh, we're totally goth) and the floor-grazing striped sweater over a tight midi-length striped frock. A + O are constantly adding a funky edge to dinner party wear, which we can totally get behind. We could see sporting a pillbox hat or beret with any dress in our closet (like they do!) for an instant vintage feel. But, if you're not into body-con dresses and lots of lace, their menswear-inspired pieces are just as fun.

Karen Walker Fall Collection Spins Underwater Adventure

Leave it to Karen Walker to take us on a Fashion Week adventure to places unknown. Rather than drawing influence for her fall collection on travel hot spots like Morocco or Japan, the latest from the quirky New Zealand designer takes us 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. No, but actually she was inspired by Jules Verne's nautical tale, and used it as a base for the collection, adding in her own personal flair with touches of mod '60s and Victorian elements.

There is always something poppy and the exact right decibel of twee about Karen Walker, but the effect with this nautical inspiration is truly magical. Strong bolts of color, large tentacled paisleys, and plushy angora sweaters wink back at the great '60s female icons at once: Brigitte Bardot, Twiggy, and Edie Sedgwick. Vibrant prints found their way onto booties, scarves, and bags, and candy-colored geometric sunnies ruled the runway.

Marc Jacobs Parades Magical Musical Pilgrims For Fall

He never fails to make New York Fashion Week exciting and always puts on the most theatrical, over-the-top shows. I'm talking about Marc Jacobs, of course, and before I get into the utterly insane, magical, pimped out musical pilgrim insanity that was his fall 2012 show, I just want to give thanks to this man. THANK YOU, Marc Jacobs, for entertaining us. Why can't other designers add a dose of drama or a sprinkle of staged whimsy (and/or mayhem) to their runway shows? MJ seems to be the only one having any fun around here (with the exception of Betsey Johnson and Karl Lagerfeld over in Paris). I think I speak for many of us fashion-loving folks when I say: Show us the "show" in fashion SHOW! Give us something to go bazonkers about, which is exactly what we did for this pimp hat-topped hootenanny of paisley-inflused, glitter-adorned, fur laden cornucopia of CRAY. Did we mention that Jacobs referenced not only the British musical Oliver! but also Mystery the Pickup Artist? Oh, and that Dakota Fanning and Rose Byrne were there? Holy Beetlejuice, there's SO much we need to discuss.

3.1 Phillip Lim Is Full Of Monochromatic Drive For Fall

From voluminous plumes of smoke and the thumping momentum of the Drive soundtrack to silver collars and flashes of pixilated teal, the fall 2012 3.1 Phillip Lim show was a spectacle of monochromatic noir. The mood in the room was intense to begin with. For one, it was super warm and the phalanx of fash-photogs was not too happy about the fact that smoke machines would diffuse their usually pristine photographic view. Still, front row indie music lovelies like Oh Land and Annie Clark of St. Vincent filed in ready to behold a collection depicting a modern heroine dressed "with a strength that belies her innate vulnerability," as it was described in the show's notes. What Lim delivered for fall was a diverse set of primarily black and white separates with focused structure, figure-enveloping drama, and overt pops of green and orange. To put it succinctly, these are clothes for a somber badass—aka the female equivalent to Ryan Gosling.

As New York Fashion Week marches on, the celebs continue to pull out ALL the stops for their front row ensembles! We spotted Whitney Port, Santigold, Zoë Kravitz, and Tavi Gevinson all sporting fun, printed pieces paired with a top notch beauty game. Our City girl Whitney Port stopped by the Mara Hoffman show in a buttoned-up white blouse, oversized double-breasted navy blazer, rainbow patterned wrap skirt, black tights, black booties, and crossbody Chanel bag. This outfit paired with high, side-parted blonde waves and magenta lips makes her look like a too-cool-for-school '80s teacher, and we mean that in the best way possible.

Jenny Packham Remixes Rockabilly And Old Hollywood

You can always count on Jenny Packham to pump up the GLAMOUR in your Fashion Week. Following the wispy sherbet-hued looks of her spring 2012 collection, Packham dialed up the richesse for her fall 2012 line with luxurious satins, long lines, and a heavy-handed pour of sparkle. Each model was styled in a sweeping victory roll and deep bordeaux lips with their ears dripping in chunky costume earrings—a kind of rockabilly meets old Hollywood aesthetic—and as is expected of the red carpet staple, her eveningwear totally blew us AWAY.

SEQUINS AND ASYMMETRY

Glistening garmentry is absolutely what Jenny Packham does best, and the U.K. designer held no prisoners for this fall 2012. The runway was graced by so many floor-length gowns dripping with the sparkly stuff. Whether it was in the form of a base column dress draped with a diagonal overlay, all over a long-sleeve dress with gold-to-black ombre on the shoulder, or in a swirling patterned sheer panel, there was no limit to Packham's employment of sequins. Importantly, though, it was not uniform but dispersed unevenly across a garment to create greater interest.

A Touch Of Tangerine At Preen's Fall Show

Preen is one of those labels that we can't help but be obsessed with. It's edgy punk rock vibe mixed with soft Victorian silhouettes always sends us into a serious wardrobe-envy frenzy. This season, designers Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi played with patterns and bold colors in a fresh way by mixing traditionally autumn hues (like mossy green, black, and gray) with summery neon oranges and white. For the first ensemble, a mod '60s shift dress looks like it was chopped to bits and then pieced back together, but in an incredibly thoughtful way. We've never seen colorblocking and florals used like this before, and we LIKE it. It's unexpected yet still feminine and incredibly tailored. Plus, the olive green booties ground the ensemble to make the mismatched dress look put together.
