Jean Paul Gaultier Paris Fashion Week

Joan Smalls, Karlie Kloss, and Jessica Stam walk as iconic musicians for Jean Paul Gaultier's Paris Fashion Week show.

More than just a designer, Jean Paul Gaultier is a consummate showman. It's safe to say that you can always count on his Paris Fashion Week shows to dazzle and straight-up entertain. This season was no exception, with JPG not only outfitting his models in gorgeous new Spring 2013 togs (fringed skirts, floral satin pants, latticed wireframe sleeves!!!) but ALSO styling them after iconic musicians. *Cue mental glitter bomb, exploding rainbows and Lisa Frank dolphins.* What does that mean exactly? Well, for starters, you get our House of Style hosts Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss (both of whom also walked the Stella McCartney show this morning!) killing dead a sultry Sade and a braided Boy George respectively. And given JPG's long-storied love of Madonna, there was no shortage of rosary-clad Madge tributes including this sheer black number showcased by the lovely Jessica Stam.

Dolce & Gabbana, Jeremy Scott

Dolce & Gabbana and Jeremy Scott show burlap sack dresses for Spring/Summer 2013 and 2012 respectively.

Take note, public. Thanks to the one-two punch of Dolce & Gabbana and Jeremy Scott, burlap potato sacks have now graced the Fashion Week runways for two years in a row. That means we officially need to get one (or two or infinity) into our closets STAT. I know what you're about to say: "You mean you're not already wearing burlap potato sacks on the daily? *hair flip*" Well, pump the brakes on the judgement train for just one hot second because maybe we have sensitive skin and thus maybe wanted to feel this trend out before diving in head first! *catches breath from defensive hyperventilating*

Azealia Banks, Solange

Azealia Banks and Solange are each Fashion Week front row staples in their own right. Miss Knowles (who just dropped a teaser video for her new forthcoming album BTW!!) is known to primarily haunt the coveted seats at New York Fashion Week while Harlem-native Banks frequents the international circuit even though both ladies are currently based in New York. The two finally crossed paths at this season's Milan Fashion Week sitting front row at the Just Cavalli Spring 2013 show!

Olivia Palermo London Fashion Week

When fashion week rolls around, we try to pull out ALL the stops with our ensembles--mostly because we know that everyone is bringing their A-game to the shows. But now that NYFW and London Fashion Week are over, we have the chance to look back at some of our fashion faves and check out justtt how much they killed it this season. At the tippy top of our list is The City's Olivia Palermo. She continually ba-rought it during LFW, but not in the typical sleek head-to-toe black kind of way, she went for super bright hues that she colorblocked oh-so-effortlessly. And for that, we bow down.

scott stevenson

Scott Stevenson at his fashion show in New York.

We can always count on the scene outside the Marc Jacobs show to be a little crazy, but this season the New York Armory was even more of a spectacle than usual, thanks to Scott Stevenson and his impromptu outdoor fashion show. The 24-year-old designer literally hit the streets this month, staging a renegade runway on the sidewalk that took place just as guests were filing out of Marc Jacobs. Inspired by the heat of summer and DIY to the core, Scott's Spring 2013 collection featured sheer blouses, cropped jackets, and conceptual cutout details- what he dubs as a new kind of "summer layering." The concept of a guerilla-style fashion presentation is nothing new, and we really feel that nobody did it better than X-Girl in 1994. In fact, it was Scott's friend Todd Oldham who originally made the comparison. But despite stunts like sewing models into their outfits on the subway ride uptown and planting the presentation directly on the sidewalk, Scott told us his one-man show arose organically out of the need to make a statement without many resources. "It came about from the necessity to create and not having any money to do it."

t-shirts fashion week

T-shirts on the runway at Acne, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Ashish.

Say what?! Oh, that's just some of our favorite designers channeling their inner wordsmiths on the runway this season. Acne, Phillip Lim, and Ashish clearly had a LOT on their minds for Spring/Summer 2013, with models parading graphic tees down the catwalk...literally giving us a mouthful. We hear that the Acne collection was inspired by Emmylou Harris' cover of "Wrecking Ball," so it makes sense that the clothes repped their country heritage with modified gallon hats and serious denim. Designer Jonny Johansson also paid tribute to the musical backbone with t-shirts stamped with, yes, "MUSIC." There's no denying this message. 3.1 Phillip Lim hit the grunge scene hard in the label's NYC show, showing layers on layers on layers of sheers, sparkles, and prints. But what we loved most about the downtown edge of the collection HAD to be the designer's "I <3 Nueva York" tees (complete with an upside-down heart). The tourist shop staple has never looked so cool.

HOMG! It's a fortuitous day when in a single event boy bands and international Fashion Week collide before our eyes. Enter One Direction's Harry Styles at London Fashion Week and the (potentially fatal) brain explosion that has become our Tuesday afternoon. The 1D dude showed up at yesterday's Burberry Prorsum Spring 2013 show, making his front row debut and fueling the swirling rumors that he's dating Burberry face Cara Delevingne.

Lady Gaga

It was Lady Gaga's surprise walk for Philip Treacy's London Fashion Week show that had us all bracing ourselves, gripping the arms of our desk chairs in near-disbelief as she sported not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR different outfits. Now, we're slack-jawed and slow-clapping for the break-neck speed with which she's taken Vivienne Westwood's "Climate Revolution" shirt from the runway to the street. In this case, that speed would be a cool 24 hours. *rubs eyes and triple takes at computer screen*

Lady Gaga Philip Treacy

Lady Gaga opens up Philip Treacy's spring 2013 show during London Fashion Week on Sept. 16.
Photo: Getty Images

Whew, Lady Gaga's been busy this week! Exactly seven days ago, she was spotted in London wearing a white gown that resembled a wedding dress to the Arts Club in Mayfair, then she flew back to NYC to promote her Fame fragrance (complete with a partially-shaved head and skull tattoo), and just this weekend she was back across the pond making QUITE the impression during London Fashion Week. For the first time in 12 years, iconic Irish milliner Philip Treacy (yes, the guy who made Princess Beatrice's infamous pink fascinator) showed his collection during LFW, and Lady Gaga did her best to properly support the designer—by opening his show in a dramatic sheer pink burka over a floral-embellished nude bodysuit. She stepped out onto the pitch black runway with nothing but a spotlight and the sound of her platform heels hitting the ground, extended her arms out to the side and said, "Ladies and gentlemen, the greatest milliner in the world, Philip Treacy—in the clothes of the late Michael Jackson. Open fashion!" And just when we thought that would be the highlight of the show, Lady Gaga continued to switch up her ensemble off the runway so many times we could barely keep up.

Anna Sui

Looks from the Anna Sui show during New York Fashion Week.

It was a packed house at the Lincoln Square theater for the Anna Sui show. Backstage was abuzz with makeup artist Pat McGrath rubbing elbows with stylist Carolyn Cerf de Dudzeele and editor Andre Leon Talley, while models flitted through the various stations for finishing touches to hair and makeup. House of Style hosts Karlie Kloss and Joan Smalls were patiently waiting for their side-swept blue bangs to be perfectly pinned and placed and I scurried to my seat just in time for the room to darken.

According to Anna, the show was an homage to French designer and interior decorator Madeleine Castaing but there were several lashings of quintessential Anna throughout, with visible nods to punk and grunge. There were playsuits with berries and leaves that when clustered together looked like camouflage. Silky, fluttery rompers were printed with what looks like ombré crochet, a creamy lace cape was topped with bicorne caps with accents of indigo, jade and teal peppered all over. Textiles ranged from lurex to chiffon to lady-like slubby tweets and tulle and the collision of prints, textures and colors were impressive in its harmony—a definite Castaing calling card.
