Preen NYFW

Preen is one of those labels that we can't help but be obsessed with. It's edgy punk rock vibe mixed with soft Victorian silhouettes always sends us into a serious wardrobe-envy frenzy. This season, designers Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi played with patterns and bold colors in a fresh way by mixing traditionally autumn hues (like mossy green, black, and gray) with summery neon oranges and white. For the first ensemble, a mod '60s shift dress looks like it was chopped to bits and then pieced back together, but in an incredibly thoughtful way. We've never seen colorblocking and florals used like this before, and we LIKE it. It's unexpected yet still feminine and incredibly tailored. Plus, the olive green booties ground the ensemble to make the mismatched dress look put together.

Zac Posen NYFW

Sitting front row at New York Fashion Week, you can't help but imagine which gowns might end up on which stars on the red carpet. Every stunning ball gown that catches your eye, you envision on anyone from Rihanna to Taylor Swift then secretly get excited when the gown actually does hit the award show circuit, just like you predicted (trust us, it's better than betting on a team for the Superbowl). For his fall 2012 collection, Zac Posen gave us a myriad of spell-bounding gowns that would be befitting of a Hollywood star, with a royal blue printed number practically made for, say, Reese Witherspoon at Cannes and a red mermaid stunner that Jennifer Lopez could bring to life. Zac Posen's dramatic eveningwear, from the sweeping hems to the decadent satin fabric, looked like it should come complete with a sea of paparazzi and flashing lightbulbs.

DVF NYFW

Guys, has Diane von Furstenberg been listening to LMFAO's "Sexy And I Know It?" She got all mysterious and sexy on us for fall 2012—and we're talking bare shoulder, plunging neckline, front slit kind of sexy. The fashion wunderkind designer has made a name making wrap dresses a staple in every stylish woman's wardrobe, finding fans in everyone from Rachel Zoe (who sat front row) to The City's Whitney Port. But this time, Diane von Furstenberg traded in the feminine office-friendly look for a dash of subtle sexiness, invoking a sense of come-hither mystery with a parade of vibrant cocktail dresses and smoldering gowns down the runway. Her wrap dresses took a backseat to resplendent color-drenched separates and bold, printed jumpsuits with daring halter necklines. The impetus for all this sassiness? A rendezvous with a dashing gentleman (hmm, we're thinking... Alexander Skarsgård or David Beckham, pre-marriage) that Diane von Furstenberg imagined as "a meeting with suspense and expectation." So...if you're now daydreaming of being chased by the lover of your dreams who just happens to be completely OBSESSED with you, you're right on target for DVF's latest inspiration.

Me and Prabal
Photo: Alex Catarinella

I met my insanely talented buddy Prabal Gurung two summers ago at a gay dive bar in the East Village. Being the consummate professional fashion blogger, I had no clue he was a designer, let alone "this generation's Oscar De La Renta", as I’ve now heard it be whispered. I later learned—via, like, every fashion-outlet-in-existence the next morning—that the cause for PG's perma-smile and arms-flailing dance-floor takeover alongside his fashiony posse (who he playfully calls his "sisters") was that he'd just gotten the news hours before that Michelle Obama had rocked one of his designs. NBD. Since then, I've had the opportunity to faint onto the catwalk for two spectacular Prabal Gurung shows. Yesterday was my third, for his buzzed-about Fall 2012 collection, and you best believe it when I say, girrrrl, it was EVERYTHING and a bag of Swarovski-encrusted chips.

Victoria Beckham

If you're searching for an incredibly tailored, military-inspired frock for fall, look no further. Victoria Beckham's A/W 2012 collection was filled with one sleek body-conscious dress after another. She proved once again that she has mastered the feminine silhouette by going for modest cuts in curve-hugging shapes, but this time she added round gold buttons, strong epaulettes, and high-cut collars. We loved the color-blocked army green and black form-fitting frock with a double wrapped leather belt paired with slouchy socks. This menswear-inspired dress couldn't look more feminine with its impeccable tailoring. Victoria's pieces were mostly muted maroons, greens, and black, but there were a few stand-out colors in her collection—this blue number being our favorite. The bright azure paired with a contrasting maroon collar and cut-out sleeve cuffs adds an updated look to the broad shoulders that were popular during World War II. In another ensemble, she goes all-out military with a structured gold button-up wrap dress paired with gray and black socks. For each look she kept the makeup simple with a bold rep lip, deep side-parted hair, and minimal eye shadow.

Rachel Zoe's name is pretty much synonymous with Hollywood glamour as the stylist du jour has helped cement some of our favorite actresses as style icons. Nicole Richie's sweeping 70s-inspired maxi dresses and oversized shades made her such a fashion know-it-all that she went on to create her own retail empire. And let's not forget Anne Hathaway who was crowned a red-carpet goddess after Zoe styled her to perfection for the 2011 Oscars. And then there's Rachel's own son, Skyler, who in less than a year, already has a wardrobe that looks better than ours. Yes, Rach can even turn toddler garb into red-carpet gold with her magic, transformative stylist powers. And now that the new mom has conquered Who's Who in Hollywood, she's set her sights on rock-and-roll.

Enter Mick Jagger. Inspired by "the rock and roll glamour of London in the late '60s and such fashion icons" as Jagger himself, Rachel showed a collection of resplendent gowns and ombre faux fur coats that evoke 60s luxury and decadence. Do you see that gorgeous ivory dress with the to-die-for neckline and sultry side slit? Duh-ROOL-ing! We can already envision Rachel's dresses, in ivory and metallic hues, on starlets like Blake Lively or Olivia Palermo of MTV's The City who sat front row. Accessories like fur hats and knee-length gloves embodied Rach's rocker-meets-retro vibe along with smokey eyes and sleek hair plus a single braid for a funky, too-cool-for-school flair. We're actually putting one single braid into our hair as we speak since Rachel's confirmed it's the new, hot look for Fall.

Sally LaPointe

Looks from the Sally LaPointe fall 2012 show.
Photo: Getty Images

Sally LaPointe is notorious for her sharp-shouldered, angular pieces that have helped create one of Lady Gaga's most signature looks. (Remember that little black dress she couldn't stop wearing?) This season, Sally redefined her goth-meets-glam style for softer, yet still structured, pieces inspired by Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis. Sally's parallel journey of transformation certainly shows with her colorful (!!!) and patterned (!!!) pieces that still reference her dark roots. All the models sported pale visages and minimal eye makeup with a super shiny, blood-red lip. In one head-to-toe burgundy ensemble, she paired a snug wool blazer with a long, chiffon-layered paneled tunic and matching flared pants. We love how the low-cut leather gloves add a touch of unexpectedness to her soft and flowy look. We died over her Metamorphosis insect-inspired printed blue, green and rust-colored mock neck dress. The shoulders, the cut, the layered drama around the hem—it's all so perfect. Sally proved that, yes, you can still wear white after Labor Day in an all-white ensemble perfect for fall—a cape over a silk jersey bodysuit and silver wide-leg trousers.

Gisele Bündchen, Shalom Harlow, and Carmen Kass walk in the Alexander Wang Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week show.
Photo: Getty Images

Alexander Wang is one of the fashion community's most celebrated young designers of late. At just 28 years old, he's already won a slew of awards including the 2008 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award and has grown his collection to being featured in over 200 stores. Fashion heavyweights like Anna Wintour and Carine Roitfeld are consistently vying for a spot in his front row at New York Fashion Week, and it's not hard to see why. Along with boundary-pushing fashions and a gift with leather and metal, Wang is a showman. And never was that more evident than at today's Fall 2012 runway presentation.

Models walk the runway at the Christian Siriano fall 2012 fashion show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at the Eyebeam Atelier on February 11, 2012 in New York City.
Photo: Getty Images

It makes absolutely no sense to me that the notion of Christian Siriano having something to prove prevails. Especially since your boy is a MONSTER at construction and turning out the most serious dresses. According to Eric Wilson at the Times, this fall 2012 collection was inspired by bats, more specifically a horror movie from the '30s entitled The Vampire Bat. And though the fluttery cape details on some of his shorter dresses faintly evoke the flying, bloodsucking mammals--and the cuts are very late-30s--the color palette and the gravitas of the longer dresses reminds me more of a corseted Winona Ryder circa Dracula wherein she played Mina and looked devastating doing it. I really wish I had an animated GIF of each because honestly they all moved differently. The one on the left slithered like mercury and the one of the right swung in the most hypnotizing undulations.

Helmut Lang Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

As much as I adore gawping at genetic anomalies swan down slick runways in precipitously tall heels wearing tens of thousands of clothes, sometimes it's like spending too long at the perfume counter--after the umpteenth ensemble, your senses SHUT DOWN. Which is why I get excited when someone flips the script on a silhouette and makes me snap to attention. Especially when the designer has deigned to showcase a look that any ol' mortal regular person can mimic without THE very specific coat or THE very specific dress. This snood situation courtesy of the co-creative directors behind Helmut Lang--Michael and Nicole Colovos (formerly of Habitual)--is exactly that.

Though some of the monstrous funnel necks were attached to the wrap coats, this is just a keen study into piling on some wide felted wool strips in various colors, interwoven with thinthinthin printed organdy scarves with complementary outerwear that instantly gets a face-lift (or maybe a high-quality collagen peel and 10 hours of sleep). Plus, I also adore the contrast of wearing cobwebby knits with leather pants that are anchored with a pitch black snood. With all the silhouettes elongating for Fall 2012 with monochrome, basque bodices, long swishy skirts and tall collars, a quick way add even more height is one of these mufflers. It's sorta like that Portlandia skit with birds--put a snood on it! Unless you're a dude, 'cause then it's on a case by case basis and most of the time very bad news.
