CuteCircuit

Call us crazy, but we haven't stopped thinking about Katy Perry's Prismatic World Tour since she first announced it back in November. It's still three months away, but we're getting increasingly antsy and excited—especially (obviously) concerning all things wardrobe. So you've gotta understand the pure joy we felt when we saw CuteCircuit (one of Katy's favorite designers, NBD) show their Fall 2014 collection at New York Fashion Week.

Katy has worn some of their pieces before—her light-up gown at the 2010 Met Gala and white catsuit at her 2011 American Idol performance were both designed by CuteCircuit. So, when everyone started raving about iPhone-controlled miniskirts and dresses embedded with LED displays this week, Katy was probably like, "YAWWNNN. Tell me something I DON'T know." (JK, she's way nicer than that.) Designers Francesca Rosella and Ryan Genz have been doing their futuristic thing since 2004, but now that the brand is *officially* on the fashion radar, we have our fingers and toes crossed that Katy will ask her old friends to provide a few (or more) pieces for Prismatic.

We've already discussed beauty trends from New York Fashion Week, so now we need to discuss the other major player on runways that isn't, y'know, clothing: HAIR! After looking at basically every Fashion Week picture that exists, we decided the number one trend that ruled the runways, hair-wise, was braids. There were braids everywhere. Some people may think braids are reserved for warmer seasons like spring or summer, but those people would be wrong. Fall/Winter braids are obviously becoming a ~thing~, so you better make sure your fingers are nimble come September. Check out braids from NYFW below!

BRAIDED BANGS

Braided bangs, a somewhat underused plait in the braid world of which I'm queen, showed up twice on runways. The first was at Creatures of the Wind, where the braid practically covered the model's entire forehead, and the second was at Nanette Lepore where it was thinner and sleeker. You don't need actual bangs to get yourself some braided bangs—just comb some of your hair forward and voilà.

As a proud lifelong brunette, I'd never discredit my tonsorial sisters by saying blondes have more fun. HOWEVER, when it comes to New York Fashion Week shows, The Blonds definitely have more fun than anyone else. The dynamic duo of David and Phillipe Blond always seems to find inspiration in the most unlikely of places, and in less-capable hands, off-the-wall ideas like theirs have the distinct potential to fall really really flat (spoiler alert: They never do, though, because these two are rhinestone-swaddled geniuses). Their collections—and accordingly, their shows—are always campy but never corny, forever nailing the exact frequency of BANANAS. For Fall 2014 they looked to Gotham City—more specifically, Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer) circa Tim Burton's Batman Returns.

This year at NYFW the clothes seemed to take a backseat to nearly everything else. Not that there wasn’t anything interesting being shown on the runway—there was just a lot going on: the polar vortex, the longer-than-ever trek from show to show, the Instagram bait sets at Marc Jacobs, where a layer of gray clouds canopied the audience, and Opening Ceremony, where Belgium chocolate dripped from the walls in sync with L-VIS 1990’s live soundtrack. Yet the biggest non-sartorial talking point was the models who wore them. Designers put more energy than ever into casting this year, which made for a lot more surprises throughout the week.

KENDALL JENNER AT MARC JACOBS

Marc Jacobs has an eye for budding young stars. He helped put Miley Cyrus on the fashion industry’s radar early last year when he sat her front row at his Fall '13 show, dressed in a head-to-toe look from the then-current season, and recently tapped her for his Spring ads. So the designer’s decision to cast Kendall Jenner must mean that he sees potential in the reality TV star-turned-model. Not to mention the surprise of seeing her with bleached brows, a sleek bob, and in a sheer top. PR gold.

That's all, folks. After a week of fashion shows, new collections, and celebrities, New York Fashion Week is officially over. Of course, now we just direct our attention to other cities like London, Paris, and Milan. Since it's neither seven days, nor over until it hits another three cities, I vote we just change it all to International Fashion Month. All those in favor say "aye."

While yesterday was the seventh day of Fashion Week, it was not, in fact, the conclusion of NYFW. Nope, despite the event's name, it actually goes through today, which means we are not yet finished finding celebrities in the front row! Yesterday was full of faces we hadn't seen yet at NYFW—new people like the one inside Lil' Kim's body!

Mark McNairy

One of the guaranteed highlights of New York Fashion Week, at least for us here at MTV Style, is the Mark McNairy show. Without fail, his designs are this perfect combination of brazenly irreverent but just practical enough to wear out of the house without feeling like a cartoon. ALSO, much like us, McNasty loves his hip-hop and will incorporate it any which way he can, from inviting his favorite rappers to star in lookbooks à la Angel Haze or to walk in his shows as aDanny Brown and Pusha T have done for previous collections, and Cam'ron (accompanied by girlfriend Juju) did this season.

Being that the dude has an ear for music, his runway soundtrack is also consistently on-point, and this Fall 2014 show was no exception. McNairy presented a collection of fashionably IDGAF looks—knee-length camo fur, leggings as pants (PRAISE BE), and 8 a.m.-class-ready zip-up hoodies with buffalo plaid sweatpants—accompanied by a soundtrack riddled with film quotes and badassery. Stelios Phili (who's also a very talented writer over at GQ and, full disclosure, a dear friend of mine) was the man behind the mix and kindly obliged my barrage of questions about the track he created.

MTV STYLE: How would you describe the soundscape you created for the Mark McNairy show?

STELIOS PHILI: What a person hears in their head every time they're about to give zero effs. Like that scene from Napoleon Dynamite when the little kid on the bus asks Napoleon what he's gonna do today. Napoleon responds, "Whatever I feel like I wanna do, GOSH!" I tried to apply that philosophy to the music. Like, I turned a beautiful Miles Davis trumpet solo into a house beat that changes tempo four or five times and, at one point, has Beavis and Butt-Head dousing it in fart noises. Can you find the effs given? I can't.

I love these two as a couple. What a festive way to celebrate two important events in their life. Mariah looks like a dream.
