Pamela Love Fall 2012

If you haven't already been following Pamela Love's boho chic meets new wave tribal jewelry collection, you have so much to catch up on! She's the master of mixing metals with colorful, earthy stones in undeniably original shapes and sizes, which is why we had to stop by her fall 2012 presentation in Milk Studios. The models were clad in unbuttoned brown overalls and worn-in white tees smothered with Pamela Love goodies. (Plus, we're PRETTY sure that's dirt on their faces.) The first look featured a gigantic gold collar with turquoise detail, Aztec-y triangle gold chain necklaces, stacked cuffs, and pointy spear-shaped metal rings. The second look is all about the statement necklace and oversized geometric arm cuffs, which, paired with these workman's ensembles, gives us a serious industrial revolution vibe. While we were checking out the steampunk-inspired pieces, Soft Circle played some equally industrial music from nothing but electronic drums and analog synthesizers. Hisham Bharoocha, who hails from the experimental noise band Black Dice, said he made the set based on Pamela's direction to use industrial sounds with an art deco feel.

Nicholas Kirkwood's spring collection at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City.
Photo: MTV Style

To say we're bananas about shoes is an understatement. Give us sky-high platforms, wooden clod-hoppers, sparkle oxfords, or neon yellow heel warriors and we're beaming with everlasting joy. Give us a pair designed by Nicholas Kirkwood, however, and we're gone. Finito. Passed out under the table. You guys, Nicholas Kirkwood's heels, nay works of art, are so bazonkers amazing, we need to break out the smelling salts when a new collection debuts. And once you see them in person and/or feel their gloriousness on your feet—like we did last night at Saks Fifth Avenue in Manhattan (*squee*)—their beauty becomes three-dimensional yet still totally unreal. Mr. Kirkwood himself was in attendance from his native Britain to debut the spring collection, and from the lines of well-heeled ladies waiting to get a moment of his time to the oohing and ahhhing over a pair of scribbled flower color block platforms, we knew we died and went to shoe heaven.

Angela Simmons, Alexa Chung, Theophilus London, and Olivia Palermo at New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

And we're off! New York Fashion Week has officially begun, which means we'll be spotting tons of celebs in the front row AND around Lincoln Center. We're only one day in, and we've already peeped some crazy-cool ensembles on Angela Simmons, Alexa Chung, Theophilus London, and Olivia Palermo. Angela stopped by the BCBG Max Azria fall 2012 show in a long sleeve, leather panel black dress with an insane gold plated Giuseppe Zanotti choker body piece and pony wedges. She added a pop of color to her ensemble with a bright crimson lip and bold seafoam green nails. Is it just us, or are you getting a serious Matrix vibe from Ms. Simmons' slicked-back hair look? We likey! Alexa Chung sat front row at the Honor show in a winter-ready double breasted peacoat ensemble. She paired a thick blue cable knit sweater with a black skater skirt, opaque tights, and snakeskin heels. She looked totally comfy-cool with her minimal makeup and no-nonsense hair.

You know you're about to be swept up in the consuming maelstrom that is New York Fashion Week when you enter the tents to see the BCBG Max Azria show. Not only does the Hollywood-friendly label typically kick off Fashion Week, it's always filled to capacity and boppin' with enough front row lovelies to keep the cameras flashing. For Max Azria's fall 2012 show, in addition to a bevy of bloggers including The Man Repeller (aka Leandra Medine) and The Glamourai (also known as Kelly Framel), Run's House alum Angela Simmons vamped it up in a black dress and metal harness, and Maria Menounos and Food Network fave Giada De Laurentis gabbed in blue BCBG dresses. And what about the fashion, you ask? It was dark, color-blocked, and incredibly furry.

Alexa Chung Janelle Monae Leighton Meester Lindsay Lohan amFAR

To officially kick off New York Fashion Week, amfAR hosted a star-studded gala that brought out some of our favorite fashion-y gals. Leighton Meester, Alexa Chung, Janelle Monae, and Lindsay Lohan came out to support the Foundation for AIDS Research in their red carpet-ready ensembles, but, um, have we gone colorblind? All four ladies opted for entirely black and white ensembles! Leighton Meester was decked out in head-to-toe black Louis Vuitton goodness. She wore a plunging belted dress with fur trim, a gold chain clutch, and ankle strap platforms. Leighton sported soft waves with light fringe and barely there makeup. Alexa Chung ALSO wore LV for her ensemble but opted for all white instead. She looked '60s mod-chic in her layered satin top and studded floral skirt paired with gold toe pointy heels and a screenprinted bag. She stuck to minimal makeup and a tousled bedhead for her beauty look.

Rachel Comey Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week Show.
Photo: Getty Images

Dear Rachel Comey and Vorhees. This is exactly how we would dream our perfect New York Fashion Week experience to begin. Not only are we treated to a wonderful new season of clothes to ogle and lust after, but to be introduced to fresh garments underscored by a LIVE performance?? *wipes away single happy tear* Our hearts are overflowing with so much unbridled fash + music collision JOY that we can hardly contain ourselves. Being treated to the ethereal moany synths of Vorhees IN THE FLESH while images of Rachel Comey's mod conservative collection traipsing down the runway wash over your brain is so much more than we could have ever asked for. From fascinating illusion garter socks, structured clutches with bar handles, the BEST day-to-day shoe game, and that exquisite tangerine funnel neck coat, Rachel Comey nailed the details and will surely recur many times over in our accessories wrap-up at the end of the week. But real talk, it's taking a whole LOT of fibers of my being to confine myself to this browser window instead of travelling even further down the Vorhees/Dana Wachs rabbit hole that I've already begun to dig.

steven alan fall 2012 new york fashion week

Do you hear heels clacking, repressed yawns, and banshee screams coming from the distant caverns of our closets? It's the sound of New York Fashion Week, everyone! And we're elated to kick things off with one of our favorite indie labels, Steven Alan, which was presented bright and early this morning at Pier 59 Studios along the Hudson River in Manhattan. The mood was chipper, the coffee plentiful, and everything in this Mexican road trip-inspired collection was begging to jump into our wardrobes immediately. Steven Alan started his business as a super cool downtown retail shop selling other designer wares, but he soon morphed into a designer himself, creating one of the most wearable collections for both men and women that mixes casual classics with aloof cosmopolitan flair. For fall 2012, Alan is all about driving along a dusty road blasting vintage Colombian Cumbia music while your red skirt whips around in the breeze. Also, there are fedoras, pops of red, and battered leather handbags aplenty.

Kanye West is confirmed to show at Paris Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

BIG NEWS. Kanye West is showing another collection at Paris Fashion Week! According to today's WWD, West will return to Paris to show his namesake collection, KANYE WEST (it's just his name, y'all, let us never, ever in a million light years evahhh make the mistake of calling it "Dw" again), at 9:30 p.m. on March 6. Even though it will not be on the official Paris Fashion Week calendar, it will run on the sidelines of the shows. As you might remember from his Paris fashion debut last year, Yeezy was nervous and the fashion critics were harsh, but we're glad to see him pulling through to give it another go whatever the case. You might also be familiar with the fact—per his triumphant Twitter rant—that the KANYE WEST collection had no financial backing or PR as of a few months ago, so the future of his foray into fashion design remained uncertain.

But, ladies and gentlemen, the power of #DONDA has seen him through! KW is back and, hopefully, better than ever with his new creative conglomerate company crowdsourced and powered by anyone who might have emailed that Gmail address he tweeted on that fateful rant of a night. We're hoping he's put together a winning team of enthusiastic (and talented) peeps who will help make his dreams of being a real designer to contend with come true. We're also mega jazzed to see if there will be anymore sweater heels, jetpack fur bags, mixed silk trousers, and snarling dog jackets that may or may not have been slightly derivative of a certain Givenchy Rottweiler T-shirt, but that's neither here nor there. We LOVE and BELIEVE in you, Kanye. Get up there and show Paris whatcha got!

tavi neil young fashion week cadaver

Earlier this week, we reported that fashion blogger and Rookie editor Tavi Gevinson is starring in the new animated short film Cadaver. She plays a medical student who helps a cadaver find a way to mend his wounded heart, and aside from narrating the entire film—which is written like a lyrical poem—Gevinson also performs a spare, haunting version of legendary musician Neil Young's seminal song "Heart of Gold" at the very end. It's a ginormous deal because A) it's Tavi SINGING, and B) Neil Young rarely gives any musician the rights to play this song but gave his personal permission to the high school media wunderkind. Also? Tavi G is going to perform the song LIVE during New York Fashion Week.

When we think about Parisian style (as we do) a few words spring to mind: chic, effortless, elegant. Long-limbed women loping around the cobblestone walks like well-tailored gazelles. Casual afternoons in some sort of striped knit with a bateau neck. Gobs of red lipstick. A tilted chapeau. You know, our daydream visions of the City of Lights. Paris Haute Couture Week, though, is another beast entirely. Rather than stream-lined and sartorial, haute couture is a rare breed of animal that's custom-fit with the most luxurious fabrics, the most lavish beadwork, and sits patiently while a doting visionary sews it into the vestment by hand. With a club so exclusive, this week marks a specific time when this elite tier of designers is given license to go buck wild on the runway by sheer virtue of their detail-oriented awesomeness. And buck wild they did go. Let's take a look at the week's most WTF looks!

CURTAIN CALL AT ON AURA TOUT VU

A look from the On Aura Tout Vu Paris Haute Couture Spring 2012 runway show.

Much of what we saw on the On Aura Tout Vu runway we loved: bright pops of candy colors, prints that evolve three times over in one garment, and the MOST interesting developments in hosiery. This look, however, is a little *scrunches nose* IDK. You can "Never mind the model behind the curtain" all you want, but this peek-a-boo personal pan voting booth is hardly something we can ignore.
