Rag & Bone

Runway fashion borrowing from hip-hop culture is hardly a new phenomenon. The trend took off back in fall of 1991 when Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld divisively tried his hand at “the ‘nouveau’ rapper look,” piling gold chains on his models, while his peers Isaac Mizrahi and Charlotte Neuville took similar inspiration. Now it’s pretty much a commonplace for designers to look to the genre and even tap its key players to walk in their shows. Just this weekend, Angel Haze strutted down DKNY’s runway.

Last season at New York Fashion Week, Alexander Wang—who’s merged the two worlds throughout his career—referenced ‘90s rap when he sent out "Parental Advisory" sweatshirts to the beat of Pharoahe Monch’s 1999 single “Simon Says.” A moment that perhaps also stuck with Rag & Bone’s Marcus Wainwright and David Neville when they were planning their Fall ‘14 collection.

Day Four of New York Fashion Week means we're halfway done with all this #FASHUN. Thankfully, we still have a few more days of #shehashadit's Jarvis Derrell taking on NYFW street style for us. Yesterday was rife with exposed skin and colorful hair, but today is full of layers, fur, and hats. So many hats. In case you missed any of Jarvis' earlier posts, you can peep 'em here—otherwise see below for what's been going down today on the street.

Whewww YAAAASSSSS Kweens YAAAAASSSS!!! As you may have concluded from our coverage over the weekend, New York Fashion Week marched along on Saturday and Sunday. It's Fashion Week, as in seven days, and not just the work week of regular ol' Joes. There were a ton of shows over the weekend, including DKNY, Christian Siriano, and Diane von Furstenberg, so celeb sightings were at an all-time high.

Angel Haze, Chelsea Leyland, A$AP Illz

Angel Haze, Chelsea Leyland, and A$AP Illz walk the DKNY Fall 2014 New York Fashion Week runway.

In celebration of her 25th anniversary DKNY show, Donna Karan sent a diverse lineup of models down her New York Fashion Week runway. Rather than pulling strictly from modeling agencies, Karan cast a wide net across New York City, enlisting a band of New Yorkers to premiere her Fall 2014 collection. The DKNY roster included NY-based fashion veterans like Angel Haze, who moved to Brooklyn when she was just 16 and was the face of Mark McNairy's lookbook last year; Chelsea Leyland, a Big Apple transplant from across the pond with experience fronting Cole Haan's Fall 2012 campaign; and A$AP Mob's very own A$AP Illz, repping for Harlem (you might remember him from 2013's Pyrex Vision debut).

Many outlets and individuals were elated that this DKNY show featured "real people" among the models. This is a little problematic, because I'm pretty sure models are real people (unless they've been holograms or sentient robots this whole time and I just haven't paid enough attention), even if the physique typical of high-fashion runway models doesn't reflect the majority of current living humans. But also, since all of these people walked this runway to showcase clothes, that qualifies them as models, at least for this purpose—an idea supported by snaps of the program which seemed to ignore the model title altogether, listing even career models on the roster like Devan Mayfield Nykole and Masha Korchagina by different distinctions: "artist (painter)/health practitioner" and "actress/biologist," respectively.

Fashion Week

Lo Bosworth, Siva Kaneswaran, and Taylor Schilling and New York Fashion Week.

How's everyone feeling after Day Two of New York Fashion Week? Are you warmed up and ready for more? Or are you totally burnt out already? Even if you're not trekking from one show to another, keeping up with all the trends and shows can be exhausting. I feel like I ran a marathon and all I've done is look at pictures of celebrities at Fashion Week today. I can't imagine how they feel, especially since they don't look tired, like, at all.

Last night was the launch party for the Peter Pilotto x Target collab that everyone has been eagerly awaiting. Our girl Lo Bosworth went simple in head-to-toe black, while Taylor Schilling wore possibly the cutest outfit I've ever seen. Her multicolored floral dress is totally springy and totally making me want to move to a warmer climate ASAP. As for men, Siva Kaneswaran hit up the Nautica show appropriately dressed in a sweater and scarf.

In case this whole clothing-and-accessories empire "thing" doesn't work out, Rebecca Minkoff clearly has a knack for soundtracking shows with stylish performers. Last year, Minkoff recruited Janelle Monae, who did menswear proud with a black-and-white, suspender-strapped look, to sing a few songs while the models walked. This year, the designer chose AlunaGeorge to rock her runway, and they did not disappoint—sound-wise OR sartorially.

Good news, everyone! It's Fashion Week again, and that means two things for us at MTV Style: street style and Jarvis Derrell. Yaaaaaaaassssss, Kiesha, yaaaaaaasssss!!!! Guuuurrrrlll, YUUUPPP, it's that's time again!!! YAAAASSSS, I'm obsessed!!!! Sooo excited for a full week of street fashion and the epic poses they go hand and hand with!!! Here are a few of my favorites!

lorde

Lorde at the Grammys and models from Creatures of Comfort and Adam Selman's NYFW runway shows.

When Lorde hit the stage at this year's Grammy Awards, instead of grabbing our attention with a glittery thong or an elaborate set, the 17-year-old New Zealand export appealed to our digital tastes with her dark, dripping, dip-dyed finger art. We'd spotted similar styles on Michele Lamy, the eclectic wife, muse, and creative mind behind Rick Owens, and at Mara Hoffman's F/W 2011 presentation, but now it seems like this alternative form of nail art is turning into a full-blown trend.

It's only the second day of New York Fashion Week, but we've already caught painted fingers on the runways of designers like Creatures of Comfort and Adam Selman. CofC mirrored Lorde's Grammy nails by bronzing their models' fingers from tip to joint. Selman went with a cleaner, more graphic style, adding tattooed black bands on all five fingers, like a string of permanent midi-rings. But, lest you be deceived (and as is usually the case with almost any trend), in fashion, everything old is new again—and finger art is no exception.
