It's official, y'all! This Spring 2013 New York Fashion Week hath decreed it: warm-weather leather is officially a thing. While it seems impractical given the material's luxurious thickness and the season's sticky humidity, when has that stopped us before? Like, when was the last time any podiatrist cosigned a pair of HEELS? And yet, year-round fashion staple right thurr. *dusts hands off* The recent surge in the use of this fabric versus those more breathable, like, say, cotton, raises a few questions, namely whether it has anything to do with the price of cotton and/or consumers being more willing to spend a premium on leather over other materials. But we can't deny that it also just looks reeeeeally badass. The dudes, I guess, have known that for a while (remember Kanye West's debut Paris Fashion Week show? That makes a LOT more sense now), but this past week has confirmed that the leather (or leather-look!) steez is a definite do in MULTIPLE iterations for the coming spring and summer.

LEATHER DRESSES

Leather, New York Fashion Week

The easiest way to get away with the leather trend is probably in the form of a leather dress. Our girl Joan Smalls gave it the stamp of approval, wearing a quilted Balmain version for her House of Style co-host announcement, and now we've seen it on the Spring 2013 runways of Jason Wu, Mandy Coon, and Alexander Wang. In dress form, you get the epidermal freedom of an open shoulder, arms that can breath, and depending on the cut, maybe even a little ventilation from an A-line skirt. The Wang version is especially ideal because the cut-outs provide that much more air circulation.

Forget fashion week, it was Shark Week at The Blonds where the high-camp, high-glamour from the tow-haired duo, Phillipe and David Blond, took a turn for the aquatic. The front row was, as always, a spectacle with Paris Hilton, Adam Lambert and Rico the Zombie Boy (clad in last season’s motorcycle ensemble) chatting amicably and posing for photos. So. Much. FACE.

Betsey Johnson

Sure, it was crimped hair and cat's eyes galore backstage at Betsey Johnson but there were also heaps of photographers and cameramen scrabbling for a shot of the designer who was celebrating her 70th birthday. Betsey commemorated this birthday with a 90-outfit career retrospective during New York's fashion week even amidst financial woes that resulted in the company filing for bankruptcy earlier this year.

There was nary a somber tone during the night at Espace on Manhattan's westside, that featured a musical performance from longtime Betsey bestie Cyndi Lauper and the miniature bottles of bubbly were complemented by the effervescence of a nostalgia-tinged soundtrack from our DJ for the evening—Sky Ferreira.

Gerlan Jeans, Minnie Mouse

Gerlan Jeans may not currently be a household name, but when your front row is littered with major fashion players like Santigold, Kelly Osbourne, Angela Simmons, and TWO huge celebrity stylists (Katy Perry's Johnny Wujek and Beyonce's Ty Hunter), we don't expect their underground status will remain intact for much longer. PLUS, you know how we've been all, "Yo, what's up with fashion's obsession with Minnie Mouse right now??" Well, Disney ITSELF teamed up with Gerlan Jeans for a 14-piece Minnie Mouse mini-collection which opened the show. We caught Wujek taking snaps of more than a few of the cartoon-inspired ensembles, so perhaps there's a Minnie look in Katy's future (she has worn the designer before, after all)!

New York Fashion Week Joe Nick Jonas

You guyyysss, New York Fashion Week is almost over. :( This means we won't get to spot some of our favorite celebs at shows from mere seats away or get to see them mingling with the commoners at presentations. HRMPH. While we're sad to see it end, we have to admit that yesterday's shows were certainly star-studded! Florence Welch showed off her typically stylish self at Proenza Schouler's spring 2013 show. She wore a fall 2012 chinoiserie-style wrap jacket and skirt ensemble paired with tie platform booties, a black clutch, and tons of stacked gold rings. She kept her makeup minimal, and let her GORGE hair color do all the talking.

Proenza Schouler

At first glance, a lot of the looks from Proenza Schouler's Spring 2013 New York Fashion Week show don't necessarily smack of warm weather. Sure, the colors are vibrant and the photo prints are definitely hallmark "summertime scenes" (beachy coastlines, lush greenery, an over-crowded neighborhood pool, and of course, herds of tourists lapping up their vacation days #TimesSquare), but if the long hems and leather on leather are making us sweat just LOOKING at them in early September, how are these pieces going to feel come next July?? Well, slow your roll, guys, because the Proenza Schouler design duo didn't win two CFDA awards for nothing. These guys are fashion geniuses and evidently beat us to the summer heat punchline, giving their atypical summer garments their own stealth ventilation system.

Whitney Eve Port Spring 2013

It feels like just yesterday that our City girl Whitney Port made her first ever solo runway debut at NYFW, but when we stopped by her spring 2013 Whitney Eve show at the Lincoln Center, it already felt like she was an old pro. Her jam-packed show was filled with tons of muted pastel pieces that ranged from fringe maxi dresses to printed skinny jeans to floral-printed suits paired with uptempo tunes like Icona Pop's "I Love It" and Ellie Goulding's "Settle Down." After oohing and ahhing over all her feminine yet not overtly sexy looks, we just had to catch up with the MTV star backstage to get ALL the deets on her collection. So, that's exactly what we did!

Prints and pastels were a Spring 2013 treat at Nanette Lepore.
Photo: Getty

Bright eyes, bright prints and bright detailing on everything from shoes to belts dominated at Nanette Lepore's Spring 2013 show at New York Fashion Week today. One of our favorite trends from this season's shows has been electric, pastel colors swept across eyes--we saw a more subdued, cat eye version at Alice + Olivia as well--and the Lepore lids were one of our favorite iterations yet. Opaque color reaching to just below the brow made the models eyes pop, whether it was in metallic peach, blue, or white. Moving from the top down, silhouettes were modern and airy, with one shoulder pieces, halters, keyholes, and more flowing into looks so bursting with prints that it looked like they were made of rainbow sherbet. After this show, we have officially found our personal color for Spring 2013 (but don't hold us to it because we like to be able to change our minds), and it's melon. Warm, orangey pink, we can't get enough. We were also wild about the mixed pastel plaids we saw on Brazilian Girls' frontwoman Sabine Sciubba, who performed her signature smooth, tropical tunes for the entirety of the show.

Diesel Black Gold

Riding high off the luxe leopards and leathers of last season and the rich metallic experimentations of the preceding spring/summer collection, Diesel Black Gold went for an extra specific inspiration this Spring 2013 New York Fashion Week. Creative Director Sophia Kokosalaki looked to the Josh Brolin '80s skateboarding flick Thrashin' (often alternately referred to as Skate Gang) as the cultural muse for this, her last collection with Diesel Black Gold. The movie, if you haven't seen it, takes place in '80s L.A. and centers around Brolin's character Corey Webster, his crew "The Ramp LOCALS" who are characterized by their feathered bangs and faded neons, and the run-ins they have with the other resident skate gang "The Daggers" - purveyors of many leathers and denims.

Katie Holmes and Jeanne Yang at their presentation for Holmes & Yang.
Photo: Getty

We were super stoked for Katie Holmes when we heard that Holmes & Yang, the collection that she designs with friend Jeanne Yang, would show at New York Fashion Week for the first time. Well, today was the day, and although the line's presentation was super intimate--only 150 people were permitted into the Box at Lincoln Center--the excitement was palpable in the lobby of fashion week HQ. We were walking backstage just before the presentation let out, and had to wade through a decently sized knot of photographers patiently awaiting the designer. As for the clothes themselves, (because that's what we're all here for, right?), they were prim without being stuff, clean without being sterile. Composed mostly of solid colored separates, Holmes & Yang is a completely wearable, modern line. Our one sadface about the presentation, however? Where was Suri?
