Style has moved! come with us to mtv news »

Hey, remember how the biggest conversation in the weeks leading up to this season of New York Fashion Week was about how the whole enterprise was starting to feel a bit like a circus? There was talk of designers pulling out of the traditional tents/Lincoln Center situation and turning toward smaller, more intimate (and more spread out) venues, and that Alexander Wang might even move his presentation all the way out to *GASP* Brooklyn! Well, it happened. All of it. And while we agree that NYFW, as it exists, begs to be disrupted, this week, we turned toward the eye of the storm and walked straight into the zoo. OK, a zoo. A gathering of animals, at the very least? We went to the New York Pet Fashion Show. And, BTW, (HAI, HATERZ) it was THE BEST.

There are a few things you can always expect from a Christian Siriano show: drama that's well-balanced with wearability, meticulous attention to construction, and highbrow inspiration. The Fall 2014 collection he debuted at New York Fashion Week is absolutely no exception, hitting each note with even more masterful precision than in previous seasons. We were lucky enough to catch up with Siriano backstage just before his show, where he revealed his muse and gave us a peek at his thought process when developing a collection.

KYE

Looks from KYE's Fall 2014 New York Fashion Week show
Photo: Courtesy of KYE

The way KYE is stylized in all caps, you'd think it was an acronym: clever shorthand for some elusive phrase apropos of EVERYTHING that you'll never be inner-circle enough to know because these clothes are THAT cool. Well, it's not. I mean, the clothes actually are 100% that cool, but KYE takes its name from the line's brilliant designer, Kathleen Kye. There's a good chance you haven't heard of Kye or her namesake label, and that's totally understandable seeing as she's only been showing for a handful of seasons and has only recently branched into womenswear. BUT we have a feeling that's aaaaall about to change very soon. I mean, look at this collection! I want to wear everything right NOW.

kristen-stewart

Kristen Stewart attends the Sundance premiere of her new movie, 'Camp X-Ray.'
Photo: Getty Images

Kristen Stewart just returned from Sundance, where she basically wore no makeup, dressed in bulky jackets, and still managed to look awesome. We are totally jealous of her effortless, natural beauty (and those side braids). And we don't mean effortless in the, like, "It took me two hours to get this bed head." She actually puts almost zero effort into her daily routine, according to a new interview with Into the Gloss.

Yet, despite her tough-girl glare, laid-back style, and IDGAF attitude, there's a beauty queen hiding inside the 23-year-old actress. Not the kind of beauty queen that twirls batons and wears a bathing suit with heels, but the kind of beauty queen that loves putting on fancy dresses to transform her everyday self. This is who Stewart channels when she's on the red carpet, or posing for Balenciaga, or hanging out with Uncle Karl. But she also wants to shave her head some day, so, there's that. Check out what else we learned from K. Stew's interview with Into the Gloss:

1. There's a reason she saves high fashion for the red carpet: "I really like extremes. I wear jeans and T-shirts and am a total tomboy, but at the same time, when I pull out all the stops [for an event], I want to f****** go for it, polarized in the other direction from my reality. Everything Balenciaga makes is beautiful; watching their runway shows is like watching a movie. But wearing it is not the easiest thing. It’s tough to integrate that type of thing into your life. But when you can do it—wear something unexpected, with your personal style—it’s incredibly badass."

taylor-swift

Once upon a time, Taylor Swift was the prettiest princess in all of Hollywood. Dancing teacups and singing birds followed her everywhere she went. JK. But at the beginning of her career, she did seem to follow the motto: The more tulle and sparkle, the better. "I never got to go to prom," Swift laments in a recent interview with Teen Vogue. "So when I was younger, I wore prom dresses on the red carpet or to awards shows."

Now, at the ripe old age of 24, T. Swizzle has graduated from her former style and developed a polished, more mature look that's all her own, but she still favors one of the same brands she loved as a child. "When I was a little kid, I had a pair of white Keds I wore everywhere," Taylor admits. "It was a nostalgic feeling when they asked me to be the inspiration for the collection. It's cool to be part of something with such a legacy."

girls

If you've ever watched Girls, you've probably found yourself excitedly pointing at the television, screaming, "HEY, I HAVE THAT TOP! I THINK." And then you undoubtedly rewind, pause, and run to your closet to confirm. "OMG. I DO have that top." *turns to friend, significant other and/or entirety of viewing party* "Told you so." Not to burst your bubble or anything, but we'd guess a LOT of people have picked up some of the very same pieces that Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, and Shosh wear on the show—because the characters shop at some of the very same places as us IRL folk. "They source the clothes and accessories from vintage shops, Urban Outfitters, Etsy, Beacon’s Closet, Bergdorfs, Salvation Army, Strawberry and, like, everywhere in between," The Coveteur dishes in a new, behind-the-scenes interview with Girls' costume designer, Jenn Rogien.

Rihanna

Rihanna wears a red flandana.

If there's one thing we know about Rihanna, it's that she never met an accessory she didn't like. Where most might shy away from a headband you wear across your forehead or hoop earrings big enough to be chokers, she's embraced both in the past year with open arms. Her grill game is anything but conventional, and she's clearly down to experiment with headgear. Her latest aesthetic exploit? The Flandana, the winter-perfect brainchild of brother-sister duo, Beau and Haley Wollens. We caught up with Haley earlier today to get the #facts about Rih's Flandana (which you can cop for yourself for a cool $32)!

Lady Gaga

Photo: Splash News

Remember when Lady Gaga showed up at LAX late this November in head-to-toe leather and silk? She was a vision of future-goth, dripping with inky fabric that pooled at her feet as she prepared to board an 11-hour flight to Tokyo. You were likely either bewildered or amazed. At first glance, the eye-bugging outfit, created by Slovenian designer Peter Movrin, seems better-suited for hanging out in a museum than being worn on an airplane (can you imagine trying to use the teeny tiny in-flight bathroom in this thing?), but that's exactly why it works for the ARTPOP singer, whose recent album is, among many things, an ode to where avant meets accessible.

As it turns out, Movrin's sensibilities match Gaga's in more ways than one. The designer, a self-proclaimed Iris Van Herpen obsessive, creates wearable art that embraces “the ugly”—an idea that Mother Monster has sartorially toyed with many times, especially as of late. (See also: the artwork for singles "Dope" and "Applause.") The creation Gaga wore, which hails from Movrin’s Gothic architecture-inspired Franz Madonna collection, and we caught up with the designer over the phone to figure out exactly how much Gaga’s travel threads weigh, what went into its making, and Movrin's own forays with wearable meat.

Katy Perry

A still from Katy Perry's "Unconditionally" music video.

Katy Perry really is growing up, y'all! In a stark contrast to her bubblegum Candyfornia image of yesteryear, KP has released the music video for "Unconditionally," the second official single off of her Prism album, and it's super mature and gorgeous (just like her!). Where the lyric video for the track was really stripped down and bare, the full-fledged music video is more about beautiful, rich imagery and symbolism which Katy revealed in her MTV First with Iggy Azalea was meant to express that abstract phenomenon of falling in love—and apparently unconditional love also comes with a swagged out closet of designer goods, so sign us up! We were fortunate enough to catch up with Katy's long-time trusted stylist Johnny Wujek to pick his brain about the ogle-worthy wardrobe and its inspiration.

Just in time for the widespread onset of seasonal affective disorder, A$AP Rocky released the music video for his moody "Phoenix" track (exclusively on MTV's RapFix, BTW *hair flip*). Rocky's lyrics touch on suicidal thoughts and musings on mortality, and appropriately, the video is dark to reflect the heavy topics explored in the song. Directed by Francesco Carrozzini (who shot the Harlem MC for the cover of L'uomo Vogue), the video carries the weight of a short film and employs a pretty star-studded cast to boot: Michael K. Williams of Boardwalk Empire and The Wire fame and our girl, supermodel Joan Smalls. All our Rocky-stanning (and being fam with Joan, of course) has come to fruition because MTV Style was fortunate enough to get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the video and (duh) its wardrobe!
