Katy Perry

Katy Perry really is growing up, y'all! In a stark contrast to her bubblegum Candyfornia image of yesteryear, KP has released the music video for "Unconditionally," the second official single off of her Prism album, and it's super mature and gorgeous (just like her!). Where the lyric video for the track was really stripped down and bare, the full-fledged music video is more about beautiful, rich imagery and symbolism which Katy revealed in her MTV First with Iggy Azalea was meant to express that abstract phenomenon of falling in love—and apparently unconditional love also comes with a swagged out closet of designer goods, so sign us up! We were fortunate enough to catch up with Katy's long-time trusted stylist Johnny Wujek to pick his brain about the ogle-worthy wardrobe and its inspiration.

Just in time for the widespread onset of seasonal affective disorder, A$AP Rocky released the music video for his moody "Phoenix" track (exclusively on MTV's RapFix, BTW *hair flip*). Rocky's lyrics touch on suicidal thoughts and musings on mortality, and appropriately, the video is dark to reflect the heavy topics explored in the song. Directed by Francesco Carrozzini (who shot the Harlem MC for the cover of L'uomo Vogue), the video carries the weight of a short film and employs a pretty star-studded cast to boot: Michael K. Williams of Boardwalk Empire and The Wire fame and our girl, supermodel Joan Smalls. All our Rocky-stanning (and being fam with Joan, of course) has come to fruition because MTV Style was fortunate enough to get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the video and (duh) its wardrobe!

Trish Summerville gets it. As the edgy, ambitious costume designer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Summerville's been tasked with combining high fashion (see: The Capitol), high function (see: the games) and stuff that straight up looks pretty on screen (see: well, all of it). And even though the film has yet to hit theaters (15 DAYS AND COUNTING), the few glimpses we've gotten of Panem's ornate new garments have already earned her a Style Award for Film Costumer of the Year. *brushes shoulders off*

With the second Hunger Games installment only weeks away, Summerville sat down with Refinery 29 to spill some deets on the method to her madness for dressing all 12 districts. Her artistic visions (and how they materialized) were insightful, creative and totally on point. Oh, and also, it sounds like her job is SO MUCH FUN. Here's what we learned:

MTV's Artist To Watch this week is none other than our fave barrette-wearing singer, Lorde. When Lorde was in New York recently, we had a chance to chat with her about her fashion choices and her ah-may-zing hair.

Lorde revealed that she's really into "goth vibes" (those vibes seem to be making the rounds: Rihanna's #ghettogoth steez, anyone?), even though she says the goth community may shun her. Don't exclude the lady holding strong at #1 on the Billboard charts for the fifth week in a row, goths!

T-Boz and Chilli for 'V' Magazine.
Photo: V Magazine

TLC is B-A-C-K and TBH, they look like they haven't aged a day since the '90s. Earlier this month, we got to talk to Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas about costuming for their recently-released biopic, CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, and they told us that the process was actually pretty easy—thanks to their ability to preserve original outfits from the golden days and the current resurgence of '90s style. V Magazine got to chat with the duo as well, and the mag gave us the exclusive on some choice quotes from their forthcoming interview with the R&B legends.

The Carrie Diaries

A still from The Carrie Diaries Season 1, Episode 1: "Win Some, Lose Some."
Photo: The CW

In case you were unaware, The Carrie Diaries is back! We watched the preview, peeped the poster, and now, we're ready for Carrie to be back in our lives for a second season! Obviously, the on-point '80s fashion is critical to the show, Carrie's character, and her future, adult self, which is why we're so excited to share our interview with Eric Daman, The Carrie Diaries' Costume Designer. Check out the full interview below, and if you want more Eric in your life (and, I mean, after reading this, how could you not?), you can follow him on Twitter (so many BTS photos!), or check out his website.

MTV STYLE: You worked with Patricia Field on Sex and The City for three seasons, how has that experience influenced how you dress teen Carrie on The Carrie Diaries?

Eric Daman: I draw from SATC every day, trying to create "buried treasures," or as Amy B. Harris (creator/producer/writer), calls them, "Easter eggs," that hopefully will resonate with the audience as a-ha moments, leading them to think, "A-ha! That's where the inspiration for the Carrie necklace came from!" Like, Young Carrie wearing a signature '80s style C necklace by Alex Woo. It is an intentional process that hopefully is nuanced enough to feel fresh and new, but integral to who Carrie is stylistically. I am elated and honored to have been asked to carry on and breathe new life into such an amazing fashion torch. Ultimately, I hope to do right and pay homage to the fashion icon we know and love as well.

Katy Perry in the November issue of 'W.'
Photo: via 'W'

Va-va-VOOM! With Prism hot off the record presses, Katy Cats are getting a double-dose of their fearless queen today with a new series of photos from W magazine. Actually, seeing as how they snapped dual Katy Perry covers for the Special Edition “Global Style” issue, we’re really getting a ~triple~ dose of the provocative pop singer. Perry channels old-school screen-siren glamour on one cover, wearing a perforated white Chanel dress and Harry Winston diamond block earrings with a small stud diamond necklace (also by Winston). Oh, and her makeup? All COVERGIRL products for the brand's newest face, ‘natch. (Though, on the second cover, she wears Michael Kors and Revlon.)

Praise be to VH1 and TLC for this biopic (airing tonight at 9 p.m. EST)! Not only does it give us a look at some previously untold TLC history—by way of Drew Sidora, Keke Palmer, and Lil MamaCrazySexyCool: The TLC Story afforded us the opportunity to talk to T-Boz and Chilli themselves about the wardrobing process for the film and the group's rise to style infamy which maaaayyyy or may not have caused this writer to go into cold sweats immediately following this interview. It's not every day you get the chance to talk to your heroes, OK??

Wildfang

Wildfang looks.

Tomboy is in. In case our style icons (and ruthless gender benders) Aaliyah and TLC didn’t make that clear, look more recently at Peter Som’s NYFW show, Rihanna and Beyonce BOTH wearing Givenchy menswear right off the runway and En Noir’s very menswear inspired first womenswear collection. Women have claimed men’s clothing with a newfound vigor and those who are anxious to join in, but can’t quite afford runway, can turn to Wildfang.

Shailene Woodley on the cover of 'Elle.'
Photo: Elle

Well, they could have at LEAST given the girl a towel. Shailene Woodley is one of six actresses (alongside big screen heavy weights like Reese Witherspoon, Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard) who appear on the cover of Elle’s “2013 Women in Hollywood” issue—and from the looks of it, she probably smells like chlorine. I mean, Shailene’s gotta be a very busy lady, so it’s totally possible that the mag had to squeeze a quick photoshoot in during her daily back-stroke lesson, or whatever. Or it could just be about #FASHUN. (It’s probably about #FASHUN.) Slicked back hair IS pretty chic right now.

I love these two as a couple. What a festive way to celebrate two important events in their life. Mariah looks like a dream.
