Rita Ora

Aside from the one-two punch of her being arguably one of THE most adorable girls on the planet and having a seriously killer set of pipes, we here at MTV Style are head-over-heels for Rita Ora because along with all of that, she, too, shares our deep appreciation for FASHUN and the unique ways it intersects with music. One of these such junctions is Elle magazine's annual Women In Music issue and is a cross section at which Rita sits at the epicenter. Miss Ora fronts the May 2013 issue alongside fellow lady artists Adele and Alicia Keys, but of the three cover girls, Rita is the only one to have also performed at the mag's celebratory Women In Music event in New York City, April 10th. Martha Wainwright and Kelly Rowland also took the stage that night, but Rita stood out amongst this set, too, having been the only act to switch up her look explicitly for her performance. In a great fashion Easter egg moment, we were lucky enough to carve out a little chat time with Rita and Jason Rembert, her long-time stylist and the man behind her Elle Women In Music red carpet and stage looks.

Rihanna Givenchy Tee

Serious question, y'all: Would you ever wear a T-shirt with your face on it? Believe it or not, this is an actual thing Rihanna had to ponder recently thanks to that custom Givenchy jersey she received back in February. In case you forgot, Riccardo Tisci sent her a black tee with a GIANT impressionistic painting of her visage on it (red lips and all!), and we've been dying to know when she'd bust that bad boy out to wear IRL. Well, we finally spotted RiRi sporting the tee in question at a Milwaukee Bucks vs. Miami Heat game yesterday, and it looked a lot less, uh, creepy than we imagined.

Jennifer Lawrence at the GLAAD Media Awards.
Photo: Getty Images

With the change in seasons comes that itchy, nagging desire to switch things up, have a fresh start, throw everybody off, and now that Jennifer Lawrence cut off her long hair in exchange for a shaggy, layered cut floating just above her shoulders, we're REALLY thinking about taking the plunge. How cute does she look?! Jennifer premiered her new 'do at the 24th Annual Glaad Media Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday, showing it off as the centerpiece of her otherwise minimal all-black ensemble. A play on her usual strapless silhouette, her David Koma Fall 2013 cocktail dress comes with a sheer neckline and sleeves, and strikes just the right balance of chic and girly. Not to mention, the frock's clean lines offset the added texture of her new haircut perfectly.

A still from Cat Power's Manhattan video.
Photo: Matador Records

While Chan Marshall, more commonly known as Cat Power, was filming her music video for "Manhattan," a busker in a New York subway station told her, "you're even more rock and roll than me." She tells me this over the phone, from the back of a car on her way to the airport where she is about to fly to London to perform on Later...with Jools Holland. She laughs as she tells the story, like the notion of her, a woman whose most recent album, Sun, debuted at number 10 on the Billboard Top 200, being more rock and roll than a man wailing away on an electric guitar in a train station is absolutely absurd, and don't I agree? I tell her she's pretty rock and roll herself, but she's not buyin' it. "I never set out to be a rock star," she says.

Marshall is a woman who, even after nearly twenty years of touring, putting out albums, appearing in a Chanel campaign, and soundtracking the design house's 2012 pre-fall show, still seems genuinely surprised by her success. Surprised, or wary that they're confusing her for someone else. They're most assuredly not, though, and Marshall is undoubtedly one of the most singular, compelling, and enigmatic musicians alive today. The video for "Manhattan"—a melancholy yet joyful ode to city streets with a galloping beat and a swinging, earworm of a melody—shows Marshall walking confidently through the New York City streets with her hair cropped short and dyed blond, alternating between a denim jacket and a leather one, both emblazoned with a rune-like 'C-P' symbol on the back. It's a nostalgic love song of a video, co-directed by Marshall and Greg Hunt, representing but one important city out of the many places she has lived, and lives she has had. It's all of these lives that created the singular, enigmatic artist, as well as shaped her undeniably chic (Karl Lagerfeld cast her in his Chanel campaign after seeing her standing on the street outside of the Mercer Hotel), effortless style. From a rough and tumble Georgia childhood to living with legendary '80s designer Patrick Kelly, a great many things have shaped Marshall's signature, minimalist style, anchored by jeans, boots, leather and jean jackets (all mostly provided by ACNE, who give Marshall her touring wardrobe) and, of course, black eyeliner. There's a lot more to it than that, though, and we caught up with Chan to get the whole story, and what a story it is.

Rihanna and Rita Ora both wore sports jerseys as dresses.
Photo: Splash News/ @RitaOra's Instagram

From the runways for brands like DKNY to athletes-slash-clotheshorses like Iman Shumpert and Russell Westbrook, there's NO doubt that sporty style has returned for another major fashion moment. Now the ultimate staple in athletic wear, the jersey, has officially made the jump from the field, the rink, and the court smack dab into the middle of the music world. Case in point: Rihanna and Rita Ora, who each rocked her own take on the jersey while out and about in California recently. Rihanna repped the NHL (who knew she was even a fan?) in a long-sleeved vintage black, white and red Ottawa Senators jersey, which she paired with strappy gold Tom Ford heels and red lipstick. The one item noticeably absent from her glammed-up West Hollywood look was pants. But then again, leave it to Rihanna to turn a makeshift dress into clubwear and still make it work.

Katy Perry Suno Cell Phone Dress

Just as we were starting to get worried about Katy Perry's love affair with monochrome sweatsuits, she made an appearance at the ASCAP "I Create Music" expo yesterday sporting a super cute ensemble. She showed off THE cell phone-print Suno dress from their spring 2013 collection paired with silver metallic Aldo wedges (which you can swipe up this second for only $80!), gold jewelry, and pinned-back waves. When we first peeped this frock in the office last fall, we couldn't stop talking about their cheeky take on technology—especially since they decided to use the original Nokia phone in their print. (Please tell us you remember this sucker.)

Just when you think you can't get any more excited about Beyonce's headline-making wardrobe The Mrs. Carter Show tour wardrobe, she goes and uploads a bajillion unseen designer sketches of her impossibly high fashion performance outfits. It's enough to make any Bey Stan and/or fashion nerd's head spin! *selects answer D: all of the above* Posted alongside brand new concert snaps, Mrs. Hov unveils a slew of inspired mock-up drawings, from the vibrant red Alon Livne gown with waist-high slits (which BTW gives us grown-up vibes of the orange mini Bey wore for her wind machine dance in the "Crazy In Love" music video) to her SECOND gold nipple outfit of the tour courtesy of Ralph & Russo.

Ke$ha matches her nails, necklace, and rings to her gold grill for "Crazy Kids" album art.
Photo: @iiswhoiis Instagram

Ke$ha has been a seriously busy lady these days, between her MTV Movie Awards cameo, her performances at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards and Logo NNNAwards...and not to mention, preparing to premiere her new TV show My Crazy Beautiful Life on April 23. But wait, she's not finished yet! This morning the singer surprised her Animals by dropping the new art for her single "Crazy Kids" upon the world, saying "get. ready. ANIMALS!!!" Oh, you BET we're ready. She's recruited Will.I.Am. for the remix version of the already-addictive track, and not surprisingly, the cover art is equally awesome. She's ditched the blue lipstick, face paint, and glitter of yesteryear for a completely barefaced beauty look. No masacara, no eyeliner...NOTHING. While this shocking lack of makeup might appear to be the next natural step in her "Stepford Ke$ha" evolution, the gold grill, nose ring, manicure, and jewelry still keep it from looking too, y'know, normal. Phew!

Beyonce Stan Swag that'll have the b****** bowing down.
Photo: Etsy/Society 6/Hype Means Nothing/Urban Outfitters

All the ladies, if you feel me, help me sing it ouuuuuut. Everyone is a Beyonce fan, right? If Kate McKinnon as Ann Romney on SNL's Weekend Update says it, that means it's true, right? Well, as you probably already know, King Bey has just kicked off her several month-long The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour. We're girding our loins for when the show finally touches down in NYC via Barclays Center (a.k.a. her hubby Hov's house), but that's not until August. *WAHHHHHH* In the meantime, we're stocking up on all the coolest Stan Swag (that can be read as a permutation of "super-fan" or *achem* this Stan) the Beyhive has to offer while we count down to showtime.

Katy Perry Purple Outfit

Photo: Splash News

Sure, you may know Katy Perry for her cutesy onstage ensembles and show-stopping red carpet looks, but have you ever peeped her style off-duty? Over the years we couldn't help but notice that Katy has stayed true to one particularly comfy staple in her wardrobe—the sweatsuit. And, guys, we're not talking about any ol' sweatpants and sweatshirt here, we're talking about one, solid matching hoodie and sweater combo that REALLY makes a statement. Throughout time, though, we've noticed her monochromatic sweatsuits had a fashion evolution in themselves—she's transitioned from the standard Juicy Couture twosie to straight-up cozy couture (think: Chanel), and we need to discuss it.
