club monaco madewell

Jacketed layers by Club Monaco and Madewell. Which is which?

Many of us have been waiting ages for Club Monaco to offer online shopping, and today our multilayered, gauzy-scarf prayers were answered. Long the favored brand for urban sophisticates looking to infuse their wardrobes with modern office separates and chic weekend wear alike, I can personally count Club Monaco on the top of my must-stop shopping list. Not only are their blazers exquisitely crafted in well-cut luxury fabrics, they're priced for those with a more modest budget. What's also interesting about this Canadian-born brand is that it is currently owned by Polo Ralph Lauren, so you know the level of taste and attention to quality is of the utmost importance. But here's where my "WHHAAA?" question-mark-slash-garbled-mouth-noise comes in. You guys, why does Club Monaco's website (and some of their clothing) suddenly, out of zee blue, remind me specifically of Madewell?

Geraldo Rivera Trayvon Martin Hoodie

Photo: Getty Images

By now you've probably heard the tragic story of Trayvon Martin—the 17-year-old Florida high school student who was shot by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman on his way back from a snack run to 7-Eleven. George called 911 because he thought he was "up to no good" and followed Trayvon against the dispatcher's orders. Trayvon was wearing a hoodie (it was raining that day) and was unarmed, but as George approached him, he pushed him to the ground, fired his gun, and killed Trayvon at the scene.

People have been trying to find a reason as to what would drive someone to pull the trigger on an innocent person, and this morning Geraldo Rivera told the hosts of Fox & Friends that his hoodie was partially to blame. Yep, you read that right, Geraldo thinks Trayvon's outfit choice may have had a hand in his death. WHAAAAAAT?

Rihanna Geisha Outfit

Rihanna dressed up.
Photo: Via Rihanna's Instagram

Uuuuuuuuum. What? OK, can someone go hug Rihanna. Like, right now. What is going on with her lately? Like, seriously, I LOVE this chick but between that sheer shirt "wardrobe malfunction," this article about "getting your tits out" being a "great way to feel better about your body," this outfit, and the series of photographs you see here from Twitter where she talks about being a "Gangsta Goth Geisha" and dubbing herself #PrincessOfChina (named after her upcoming Coldplay song), I'm legit getting... worried. Look it, I know girl has a SQUAD of people around her supporting her and maybe saying no 37 percent less than they should be, and that my growing increasingly concerned about where her head's at is some barnacle on a blue whale's ass, but I just want to stay being in LUH with her and her music and now I'm getting TIRED. She is wearing chopsticks in her hair.

Props to our friends at Fashion Indie for finding this GEM of a hot topic. If you're anything like us, you probably haven't even fully processed all the information bring transmitted to your oculars right now. You're probably thinking, "What the heck are Tevas doing on MTV Style??" Or you saw that Christopher Kane tip, did a double take, and were CONVINCED the fashion blogs had banded together for an elaborate style Rick Roll. We feel you. But doubt us not, little ones. The genius design mind behind laser cut neon, galaxy print, and gel-filled clutches is, in fact, also responsible for these bizarro, orthopedic-looking sandals. Just... WHY??

nicki minaj popcorn dress

Nicki Minaj poses in a popcorn dress while in Japan.
Photo: Nicki Minaj's Twitter

If there's one thing we know about Nicki Minaj, it's that she LOVES wearing food on her clothes. Not, like, broccoli cheddar soup that dripped on her dress from lunch, but pieces of clothing and accessories made to look like edible goods. I mean, have you SEEN that chicken wing necklace she wore at the iHeartRadio Music Festival? Yeahhhh. Nicki recently arrived in Tokyo and decided to have some fun with her ensemble by wearing a popcorn dress! Barbz sported a molded pastel pink, green, and yellow bustier with actual popcorn pieces pouring out the top (or so she says) paired with a red and white square circus tent skirt. Um, does this officially mean we can start hiding snacks down our shirt and not get judged? FINALLY.

Karl Lagerfeld at the Chanel Fall/Winter 2013 show as part of Paris Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

Ever wonder what my favorite uncle Karl Lagerfeld gets up to in a typical 24 hour period? Yeah, me too. For some reason, he's still not taking my phone calls, so it's not like I can ask him personally. Still, I've always imagined the designer, photographer, Chanel creative director, and all-around inspirational polymat spent tons of time reading, sketching, designing, drinking Diet Coke, and stroking his favorite kitten princess, Choupette. Well, it turns out I was correct about all of that, but had NO CLUE about King Karl's predilection for staying in his jimmy-jams (PJ's for those of you who have never slept over) until noon, his breakfast of choice, the truth about his hair regime, and the fact that he doesn't even think about tiptoeing into the office until 5 p.m. But thanks to the fine folks over at Harper's Bazaar —who clearly have more pull than Karl's own [imaginary] NIECE, for goodness sakes—we now know all about KL's ponytailed daily routine. Wait, strike the word routine. Monsieur Lagerfeld hates it apparently.

Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability in L.A. on March 15.

Oh haiii, Lana Del Rey. We see you there at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability in your glam, wintery get-up, but we have some questions about this outfit, Ms. Rey. First off, a fur coat...to an environmental event? *side eye* We're PRAYING this jacket is vintage in hopes that people don't pelt her with paint because, um, it's a wee bit offensive (we don't want to get all preachy on you, but here's why), and this ensemble seems better suited for NYC weather. We have to say, though, that's we're REALLY into this printed sheer button-up shirt and giant Versace Medusa chain combo, but then as we move down the outfit, we realize she paired it with...dark jeans and Converse sneakers. Oh.

emo graffiti

Emo graffiti.

According to a new report from the Washington Post, there's panic among Iraqi youth after people have been threatened and killed as a result of dressing in an emo style. It all stems from a recent Facebook posting of a young Iraqi man dressed in a white blazer with aviator sunglasses and coiffed black hair who was allegedly beaten to death. An Iraqi woman who refused to be identified for fear of retaliation, said his name was Saif Raad and that he was a student of hers. "I think he was killed because of the way he was dressed," she said.

Even though the skinny jeans/coiffed black hair emo look has been popular in the West for quite some time, it is somewhat new to the Middle East, a predominantly conservative part of the world. Lists have been drawn up with names of people threatened with death unless they change their adopted look. Iraqi clerics and police officials have even deemed the look satanic and a threat to society. Many young people have either cut their hair or remained in their homes for fear that they will be targeted. "If we were a normal country, this would be a normal style," said a recent Iraqi college graduate, "but in Iraq, we have these crazy militias who make an excuse to kill people."

Women attempting to set the Guinness World Record for the longest chain of brides in one location in London.
Photo: Getty Images

To celebrate the DVD release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn—Part 1, a bevy of British fans dressed up as brides and stood in front of an HMV store in London to create the longest chain of brides in one location, hopefully setting a Guinness World Record in the process. We're talking fully bridal regalia, including veils, jewelry, and even floral bouquets to both attempt the world record and buy a DVD of the film a day before the actual release. That seems like a lot of work just to get an early copy, right? Or maybe hundreds of Twi-fans really care about setting a Guinness World Record? OR is there something else to all this? The answer is YES...to the last question. Folks, beyond the world record and wearing a gown with a veil on a cold morning, all of these costumed brides got something extra special—a chance to see a clip of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn—Part 2 with Bella in all her transformed vampire glory. *passing out*

katy perry jennifer lawrence viktor & rolf

Katy Perry attends the Viktor & Rolf Fall 2012 Paris Fashion Week show; Jennifer Lawrence at the 2012 People's Choice Awards

It's fashion match time! This time the theme is BLUE. We're talking Smurf blue but with the extra added bonus of swirlies galore. (Who doesn't love a little fancy filigree?) In one corner we have the delectable Katy Perry who, in our humble opinion, kind of OWNS blue. Who else can rock an azure-hued 'do with an electric cyan ensemble while also tossing some essence of pale sky onto her eyelids like it ain't no thing? Answer: NO ONE. Unless, of course you're the lovely Jennifer Lawrence, who's about to kill (literally) in the upcoming film The Hunger Games and also in a netted royal blue swirl dress that is kinda risqué but also completely interesting. Both ladies wore similar looks by celebrated design duo Viktor & Rolf, and we can't decide who wore them better.
