Back To School Nail Art

Listen, there's nothing wrong with liking your reading assignments. It's cool to be a bookworm, and the gal behind Freestyle Nails found a way to make it stylish too! She painted a green and yellow worm across her tips and completed the look with a polka dot bow tie (aw!), glasses and a hat. For her thumb, she painted a book because, well, duh! It's a bookworm, guys.

We never thought we'd say this, but OMG, WE ARE SO SAD THE OLYMPICS ARE OVER. *sniff sniff* It feels like just yesterday we were prepping our Opening Ceremony party ensemble, and now the Closing Ceremony is over, and we're left with nothing but bags of chips and a Spice Girl song stuck in our head. :( The cool part, though, is that this year's Olympics were not only filled with tons of hard-earned U.S. victories, but also some of THE most unforgettable style moments! From the sparkly leotards to killer nail art to amazing waterproof makeup, there were endless amounts of memorable fashion and beauty looks that will forever be ingrained in our memories. Let's check out our top 10 picks, shall we?

1.) RYAN LOCHTE'S AMERICAN FLAG GRILL

First and foremost—Mr. Ryan Lochte. Before a couple weeks ago, we knew next to nothing about this Olympic medal-winning swimmer, but as it turns out he has a SERIOUS penchant for fashion-y kicks, grills, and memorable catchphrases (JEAH!). His decked-out American flag grill almost cost him a gold medal, but we think it was TOTALLY worth it, right? Sooo shinnnyyy.

Union Jack Nail Art

Photo: Via P&G

As you may (hopefully!) remember, last week we caught up with the lady behind all those killer Olympic nail designs, Ms. Sophy Robson, and she dished out allll the deets on what it's like giving top athletes the most badass manis. We immediately fell in love with her nail designs but, um, we don't live anywhere near London. In fact, the more we thought about it, there are tons of ladies who can't even get their hands on a good nail artist in their area! So, we asked Sophy to explain step-by-step how to get an Olympic-themed manicure at home for all us stateside folks. Of course she wanted to do the Union Flag (British pride!), and we willingly obliged. Also, even though she suggested using only Max Factor colors, we ain't choosy! You can pick whatever red, white, and blue polishes you already have laying around in your closet, and, if you're anything like us, we KNOW you have tons of shades to choose from. So, what are you waiting for? Check out how to get a DIY flag manicure below in just six super easy steps. (P.S.- You're welcome.)

So, the Olympics are still happening, and yeah, the U.S. has won 18 gold medals (so far), which is AMAZING and GREAT and everything, but despite all that, there seems to be another part of the games that people can't stop talking about—the nail art. We've already showed you all the killer designs that athletes have sported thus far, but haven't you been wondering just HOW every competitor got their hands on such mind-blowing manis? Well, as it turns out, one of London's biggest nail artists Sophy Robson (who some have deemed the "Nail Queen") teamed up with Max Factor to develop nail designs that are applied at P&G salons inside the Olympic Village. Niiiiiceee. After peeping these incredible manis all week long, we needed to hear from the nail guru herself! Sophy was nice enough to give us some insider deets on what the nail art scene is like in London during one of the biggest events of the year, and how the Olympic Games could change the nail art world forever.

Thanks to the Olympics starting on Friday night, I spent the entire weekend indoors watching sports. Don't even GIVE me those judgy eyes. I mean, how could I miss an opportunity to, like, stare at really buff people do flips 'n things while I sat on my couch eating snacks? I couldn't. My favorite part, though, (besides the ripped dudes) was shouting at the screen every time I saw someone flashing nail art. Seriously, that ALONE could be a sport considering how blazin' fast these swimmers and runners are. *dusts shoulders off* This year there certainly wasn't a shortage of ladies showing off their team spirit with decorated tips, so I poured my blood, sweat and tears into rounding up EVERY. SINGLE. PICTURE I could find of nail art at the Olympics. So here they are—the exhaustive list of the best Olympics nails (so far!).

Venus Williams went ALL OUT in red, white, and blue nails with a touch of gold glitter and one heck of an accent nail. Bonus points for the matching braids and liquid eyeliner. Me-ow.

Listen, typically we're not the biggest sports fans, but when it's comes to the Olympics, all bets are off. It's the one time we tune in to watch scrunchie-sporting gymnasts strut their stuff on the balance beam (or, you know, check out those buff swimmers in their teeny-tiny Speedos. Don't judge!), and this Friday it alllll begins. The Opening Ceremony is only a few days away, so OBVI we need to prep our beauty and fash game the best way we know how—with the dopest Olympic-themed nail art in town! Check out some of the best inspiration we found on the interwebs below.

UK PRIDE

Since the Olympics is taking place across the pond, we couldn't help but get into the English spirit with some UK-themed designs like this one. Here, The Nailasaurus sported four flags from Great Britain: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Per usual, her execution is perfection, and we bow down. (FYI— If you'd rather show off your U.S. team pride, check out our American flag-themed sets here!)

Iggy Azalea Fleury Rose

Fleury Rose and Iggy Azalea.
Photo: MTV

You'd think Iggy Azalea—the queen of cool "It"-girl style—would be sporting the most killer nail art at ALL times, but when the rapper stopped by the Tomahawk Salon in Brooklyn to hang with MTV Style and get her nails did, we found out that *gasp* she's only had nail art done once before in her life. "I've had nail art one time and it was actually the worst experience ever," Iggy told us. "Since then I've been a lover of nail art from afar." Well, we wanted to switch things up a bit, so we brought out one of the best nail artists in the biz, Ms. Fleury Rose, to help Iggy overcome her fears. Iggy obliged (*high five*) and told us she was filming a music video for her single "Murda Bizness" featuring T.I. the following day and wanted some tricked-out nails to go along with it. PERFECT.

Big Bang Nail Art

Photo: Via Ameblo

If y'all don't know who boy band Big Bang is, you either A.) aren't on the internet NEARLY enough or B.) haven't discovered the amazingess that is K-pop. I mean, honestly, it's kind of impossible to avoid the K-pop invasion at this point—2NE1 is about to take over the U.S. with their first world tour and Big Bang has slowly won over our hearts with their affinity for Minx Nails (awww!) and killer fashion sense. The boys, G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung and Seungri, are notorious for their edgy style and flair for all-things fashion-y and fun, so when it comes to imitating them via nail art, it's not much different. First up, we loved this unbelievable set inspired by their Alive Monster Edition CD cover art and current world tour of the same name. Even the triangle logo is dead on. ME-OOOOWWWW.

A$AP Rocky Nail Art

Nail art for A$AP Rocky's latest video.
Photo: Via @WAHNails' Instagram

Listen, we know A$AP Rocky has a thing for nail art. In case you haven't noticed, the fashion-forward rapper (who is BFFs with Alexander Wang, NBD) is always taking pics of ladies' nails just for fun. I KNOW. It's so gosh darn cute it makes us die a little inside (could you even IMAGINE A$AP coming up to you and asking to a pic of your tips? #dead), and we're just so happy that the rapper calls out killer name game when he sees it. Lately, though, he's been taking his love affair with nails to the next level by teaming up with the girls over at WAH Nails in London for his latest music video shoot (!!!). WAH Nails Instagrammed this one behind-the-scenes photo (and one photo ONLY!) of the customized nails, which read "A$AP $EX" in bold black and white letters. HOT.

We can't stop seeing '90s-themed nail art everywhere we turn. Whether it's smileys, peace signs, or aliens, all of the big trends from the grunge-meets-internet era have resurfaced on our tips, and we can't get enough! But, like, when we think back to our childhood (we were born in the '80s, SO SUE US) there are certain things that REALLY stand out (namely, Trapper Keepers, cartoons, and toys). So we wondered, "What if we recreated some of our favorite childhood memories with killer nail art?" Then we thought about how technically unskilled we were and got bummed out, but after many hours a-searchin' the internet, we can happily say that it already exists! And you know what? IT'S BEAUTIFUL. It's not some haphazard recreation of our old faves—it's perfectly executed '90s nail art, and we just about DIED over every single one of these. But enough talk! Let's dive right in, shall we?

LISA FRANK

90s Nail Art

Basically, if you were a girl below the age of 14 in the '90s, you had something with Lisa Frank plastered on it. Her rainbow majesticalness (is that a word?) spiced up our borecore suburban middle school lives, and even YEARS later we're finding her designs just as delightful as we remember. See: Her art recreated on nails above. A killer whale? A tiger? A UNICORN? We can barely stop smiling right now at how well this entire mani is executed AND all those prit-prit colors. WELL DONE! *hands nail artist congratulatory Lisa Frank sticker*
