Mixed prints for Spring 2012 at Charlotte Ronson, Anna Sui, and Karen Walker during New York Fashion Week.

The mixing of prints, whether it's florals with stripes or variations of tribal patterns worn together, is a trend that designers have been dabbling in for the past two-ish seasons, but not until this New York Fashion Week's Spring 2012 shows has it really exploded into such a colossally unavoidable force. If you haven't already dipped your toes in the idea, now is definitely the time to start experimenting. The aforementioned florals + stripes combo is a tried-and-true one and a great starting point for working up to more advanced iterations like those seen this week from Charlotte Ronson, Anna Sui, and Karen Walker.

Flares for Spring 2012 at Betsey Johnson, Alice + Olivia, and Anna Sui during New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

We'll always have a soft spot for the skinny pant leg, but if there's anything we picked up from New York Fashion Week's Spring 2012 shows, it's that billowy flares are back. It's as if the fashion gods have decided to give us all some breathing room from skintight silhouettes. To be sure, retro flared pants have enjoyed a surge of popularity recently, but never in such fun, playful prints as seen on the runways of Betsey Johnson, Alice + Olivia, and Anna Sui.

High hair at Alice + Olivia, Mara Hoffman, and L.A.M.B. during New York Fashion Week.

If there's one hair trend we were most TRANSFIXED by during the Spring 2012 New York Fashion Week collections, we'd have to say it was the emergence of HIGH HAIR. Not only has the topknot become the UP-DO du jour for the stylee-ist of gals in the tents this season (hi, Susie Bubble!), but it's made waves (and braids) in new incarnations on the runway too. One of our faves was Alice + Olivia, who went for a more classic look, opting to slick back the hair (another SPRING TREND) before shaping it into the BIGGEST BUN we've ever seen, all teased, smoothed, and wrapped to '60s debutante perfection.

Neon colors for Spring 2012 at Mara Hoffman, Nicole Miller, and Christian Siriano during New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

If there was one predominant trend saturating the whole of New York Fashion Week, it had to be NEON. Yes, color is HUGE for Spring 2012, but the hues most frequently chosen across the designer spectrum were of the EYE-SEARING neon variety. Some used it as an accent color here or there, but other designers used it absolutely everywhere. Mara Hoffman, for instance, infused her Frida Kahlo-inspired "Mexican Mama" collection with jarring prints in all shades of electric-neon VIDA LOCA-ness. Nicole Miller used it sparingly, choosing to accentuate certain parts of dresses or using neon prints selectively as just skirts or tops. Christian Siriano, on the other hand, CRANKED IT. His show was a vivid jamboree of acid green and singeing orange. But WAIT, we haven't even touched upon the accessories yet...

Marc Jacobs Spring 2012 New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

Leave it to Marc Jacobs to close New York Fashion Week by bringing the fash-masses to their knees with a SPECTACULAR spring 2012 SHOW. Having moved his usually earlier time slot to the very end of the week due to production lost during Hurricane Irene, Jacobs spent that extra time preparing to blow us all away with an EVENT—we're talking a raised curtain with models sitting in a tableau on a blue and orange-lit stage, and a wooden runway specifically constructed to elevate the catwalk experience to that of avant garde THEATAH.

As the lights faded to black, zig zag lightbulbs illuminated the catwalk "set" in front of the curtain, and the voices of women counting out loud with eerie precision revealed Jacobs's tune of choice to be Philip Glass's Einstein On a Beach. (Edgily CEREBRAL much? Yes, no? WHATEVER, WE LOVE IT.) Marc took the New York Fashion Week show to a whole new level. Even a front row illuminated with friends of Marc both old-skool and new like director Sofia Coppola and godmother to the entirety of indie rock, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, as well as recent New York transplant and the nubile face of Marc's new "Oh, Lola!" fragrance line, Miss Dakota Fanning. Oh, and the CLOTHES, you ask? Fear not, Marc-y Marc fashion acolytes, the clothes were a cellophane-wrapped, modern rockabilly extravaganza. If there was ever a more appropriate moment to type ZOMG it would be right now.

Alexa Chung, Pharrell, Chloe Moretz, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen at New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

This is it, y'all. We're done. Finished. Finito. Done-zo. New York Fashion Week is officially OVER. We don't even know what to do first—sob uncontrollably or take a really long nap, but either way we're sad because all the celebs are leaving! They are probably kickin' back sipping on some Prosecco in their private jets back to L.A. right now. (Totes not fair that the West Coast steals most of the celebs.) The only thing we have left to hold onto in the wake of their absence is our fond memories of their to-die-for ensembles. Just yesterday we spotted Alexa Chung and Pharrell Williams in casual cool outfits at the Proenza Schouler show. Alexa sported a blue floral dress with a long sleeve black shirt, pointy black bow shoes, black clutch, and skull pendant necklace. Pharrell wore his go-to white tee and cardigan paired with jeans and black boots (complete with a hand-painted Chanel logo and toes. Yes, TOES.). Chloe "Never Not Cute" Moretz look 'dorbs at the Calvin Klein show in a minimalist layered beige and gray chiffon dress, metallic snakeskin clutch, and white strappy sandals. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen oozed sophisticated chic in the front row at J. Mendel. Mary-Kate wore a head-to-toe-black blazer, maxi dress, and pointy heels ensemble, while Ashley went a little lighter in an oversized white button-up shirt, nude skirt, giant gold watch, and red pointy slingbacks. Siigggghhhh, we love everyone's outfits SO MUCH, and this is just the beginning! We've got tons more celebs at fashion week in our photo gallery below. Check it out!

Naeem Khan Spring 2012 New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

New York Fashion Week is as much about discovering next season's trends as it is about picking out the gowns the celebs will be wearing right away for awards shows (like THIS Sunday for the Emmys). If there's one designer who's become a red carpet FAVE for legions of ladies who want to look LUXE, it's Naeem Khan, master of the fanciest of fancy gowns. We're talking beaded looks of royal refinement as befitting the Queen of Jordan and our First Lady (really, he dresses them). So, when stars like Taylor Swift or Beyoncé have a particularly ballad-y performance coming up, or when actresses Zooey Deschanel and Lea Michele need to class up the carpet, they turn to Naeem's brand of uptown elegance. Khan describes his Spring 2012 collection as "COLORFUL RACY GLAMOUR," (all-caps), and while we get the colorful and glamorous, we didn't necessarily get racy—unless you count the Marilyn Manson aspect.

The Blonds Spring 2012 New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

BUNNIES at New York Fashion Week! The Blonds x Playboy is so peanut-butter and chocolate in the PERFECT ratio. Or caramel and sea salt. Or the toasty crook of a still-sleeping boy's arm that you can lock your shoulders into as you steal all the covers thereby waking him up but dropping into a REM-state slumber that you can't be jostled awake from. You know, good stuff (LOL can you tell we're dying for food and companionship on this our FINAL DAY of Fashweek?). The three-year collaboration between the spectacular, flaxen-haired duo, Phillipe and David Blond (who are responsible for outfitting Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus and Beyoncé) and the Haus of Hefner (they dress The Playmate of the Year) culminated in last night's show in New York's Meatpacking District in a disco ball blowout of gobsmackingly MEGA proportions.

The impossibly leggy designer and model Phillipe Blond opened and closed the show in a dazzling display of phosphorescent awesome, and though attendees tittered impatiently under what felt like diner heat lamps, we quickly learned that the mini floodlights made every shard and sequin SPARKLE to where even the most jaded fash-weary amongst us gasped. Face. Melt.

Whitney Port Holland Roden Sammi Giancola

Whitney Port. Holland Roden, and Sammi Giancola at New York Fashion Week.

Of alllll the celebs that come and go through New York Fashion Week, there are countless highlights for sure but we can't help it that our own MTV stars are just incredibly good-looking people who merit mention, OKAY?! Of course The City's fashion plate Whitney Port looked elegant in a white layered ruffled frock at a Rafael Cennamo spring 2012 presentation last week. We love her romantic tied-back waves, black studded clutch, gray strappy peep-toe sandals, fire engine red nails, and gold accent jewelry. Teen Wolf's resident redhead Holland Roden oozed sultry style while backstage at a Charlotte Ronson show. Her bold lips paired with her navy and white polka dot dress, navy leather jacket, brown belt, and white satin pumps made her look effortlessly cool. And Jersey Shore's own Sammi arrived at the Marithé + François Girbaud show in a leopard lace overlaid bustier dress (that fits her like a glove), a black cardigan and black pumps. She kept her hair simple and straight and accessorized with some giant gold hoops and a cross pendant necklace. Luckily this is just the BEGINNING of all the amazingness that was fashion week. To see even more MTV stars dressed to the nines, take a gander through our photo gallery below!

Proenza Schouler Spring 2012 New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

Set on knubbly rust-colored shag carpeting beneath spotty retro lighting with the sounds of tribal drum beats reverberating in your rib cage, your brain sends off an alert: "I'm either in someone's era-challenged suburban basement or en route to a volcano-top party lined with tiki torches...." You grab a paper bag to help calm your panicked breathing and realize you're at a show for New York Fashion Week. (Spoiler alert: You're also delirious. Drink some water, and get it together.) You see Alexa Chung and Pharrell Williams and quickly revert back to the bag for another panic attack. If you ever lie awake at night wondering what a collection of clothes equal parts '50s and tropical inspirations would amount to, look no further than last night's reveal of the Proenza Schouler Spring 2012 collection. It sounds bizarre, but unlike most things for which that disclaimer is afforded (e.g., liver pate, tuna eyeball, chocolate-covered crickets [I'm picky, so SUE ME]), the resultant designs are quite lovely.
