Christian Siriano Fall 2013

Christian Siriano certainly knows how to ba-ring the drama! (And we mean that in the best way possible.) The Project Runway star stunned us once again at his fall 2013 New York Fashion Week show with tons of breathtaking gowns, decadent suits, and lavish fur-trimmed coats. From the moment we stepped inside the studio, we knew it was going to be an eloquent show. Long, scarlet red curtains decorated the walls, which were lit by several crystal chandeliers. Ooh la la! According to Christian, his fall collection was inspired by the golden age of the Russian Opera. "The lavish interiors of Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre inspired me to begin work on this glamorous and opulent collection, rich with sophisticated shapes, gilded and embossed fabrications, and deep jewel-toned colors." But, when the models started hitting the runway, we were not only blown away by the INCREDIBLE pieces but the heart-pounding rock orchestra music.

Bleached performing "Think Of You" at the Chloë Sevigny For Opening Ceremony Autumn/Winter 2013 Presentation.
Photo: Getty

The last time I was at St. Marks Church-In-The-Bowery, it was to see some of the most legendary poets of the last century read the work of the late New York School poet Ted Berrigan. From Alice Notley to Jim Carroll (you may remember Leonardo DiCaprio's portrayal of Carroll in The Basketball Diaries), some of the greatest New York Poets of the last 50 years were there. What I'm trying to say is, St. Mark's Church has some serious history, which is why the fact that Chloë Sevigny chose to have her Opening Ceremony autumn/winter 2013 presentation there today is so significant. One of the city's most famous children, Chloë Sevigny is an East Village girl to the last, and choosing to have her presentation on the same hallowed ground where Patti Smith first performed is a statement that she understands and is contributing to her city's history. That she also cast her presentation with some of the most influential female musicians alive today also speaks to her desire to do something unlike the usual runway show + live band scenario that we're used to seeing at New York Fashion Week. Kim Gordon, playing with DNA's Ikue Mori, played alongside newcomers Bleached, an all-girl California valley girl surf rock band; Lizzi Bougatsos' I.U.D., a two-girl drum project; Lissy Trullie's band, Thinner; and Light Asylum's Shannon Funchess playing with Rafael Radna. When i first heard about this musicians-as-models-as-performers concept, I was really excited to see how Sevigny was planning to pull it off, and I was not expecting what she came up with. The bands were arranged around the church on five stages, and played in a round robin style in the shape of a pentagram, at least according to Bleached lead singer and guitarist Jennifer Clavin, who we chatted with after the presentation. The theme of rebellion permeated the collection in both nuanced and overt ways, the most obvious of marker of which were the signs that two models on each of the stages were holding up. Clavin explained that each band had been given the signs the day before and were asked to decorate them. The result was a mixture of band names, song titles, and obscene non sequiturs encircling the room, lending the whole undertaking a slightly bent vibe. The collection, on the other hand, is straight forward and wearable, with 60's and 70's silhouettes that looked right at home on the go-go dancing models in the middle of the room, but would also look completely right on a regular, albeit fashionable, girl walking down and East Village street.

herve leger max azria fall 2013

Looks from Herve Leger's Fall 2013 New York Fashion Week show.
Photo: Getty Images

Typically when we think of Herve Leger, we think of curve-hugging evening wear for all your saucy cocktail needs. While that may forever be the case for the major fashion label's Spring/Summer collections from here to kingdom come, the Fall/Winter offerings of late have been delightfully surprising for the Max Azria-helmed line. The leather harnesses that made their debut on the French label's Fall/Winter 2012 runway were carried over slight for the subsequent season, but now that the designs have come the full 360 to colder weather, the waist-defining leather work makes a roaring comeback for Fall/Winter 2013. Instead of adorning flowing Grecian-inspired gowns or flippy fringed flapper dresses, this season, the harnesses sit on top of clingy, long-sleeved dresses in solid black, hunter green, and oxblood or symmetrical, digitally-rendered animal prints. There's a tinge of '90s bad girl to everything — from dresses worn over pants (in the same pattern!) to belly-baring crop tops to the solid baseball caps every girl sported down the catwalk.

Mara Hoffman

It seems Mara Hoffman lives in a gypset world of eternal sunshine. She's the queen of color and dazzling, well-traveled prints year-round, but it's now, in the dredges of winter, that we appreciate her sunny design disposition most. The collection Mara unveiled today was steeped in corals, cobalts, and ultra fuschias with intricate, symmetrical prints, seemingly influenced by all corners of the world — speckled radials, stained glass motifs, and technicolor zebra stripes. Whether silhouettes were body-conscious or floaty and ethereal, every ensemble on Mara's runway was striking and dramatic. Models were accessorized with metal cap-toe shoes, Pamela Love armor rings, and earring chains draped from lobe to lobe across each model's back and long hair.

Charlotte Ronson

Charlotte Ronson's uncanny ability to capture all a girl's potential moods in a single, cohesive collection makes her shows consistently one of our most-anticipated every Fashion Week. While C.Ronson opted for a presentation this season rather than a runway show, the clothes were nothing short of covetable. The format for the designer's newest collection reveal may be different, most everything else remained constant. PYTs like Angela Simmons and Holland Roden still turned up in droves (even through Nemo's wintery mix!). The looks created by Charlotte were still both strikingly unique yet also ceaselessly wearable. And of course, her twin and reknowned DJ/musician Samantha Ronson flew in from sunny LA to spin her show soundtrack.

KAtie Gallagher Fall 2013

Looks from the Katie Gallagher fall 2013 New York Fashion Week presentation on Feb. 8.

You already know how obsessed we are with Katie Gallagher. The rising New York-based designer really knows how to tug at our gothic heart strings with her witchy, Wednesday Addams-inspired pieces—and her fall 2013 collection was no different. Her navy, raven, and slate ensembles consisted of gorge laser cut leather, cozy knits, and slim-fitting silhouettes. Personally, we loved the curve-hugging, hooded navy gown with intricate wavy details and a killer, stem-like leather belt. We were also obsessed with how Katie took a simple body-con dress and added laser cut leather cuffs to completely transform the look. Also, um, peep that long sleeve hunter green crop top. It has mesh paneling! #WANT For the beauty look, Katie had her models wear partially slicked back hair and light, powdery blue eyeshadow without any mascara, while the rest of the face was left clean and simple. For the nails, though, WHEW! It's a whole different story. Nail artist Miss Pop ba-rought the drama with her transparent, stiletto tips with black and white polka dot detailing. AMAZING.

Looks from the Rebecca Minkoff show during New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

When a band has the models dancing backstage at T-5 minutes til showtime, you know good things are gonna happen when the curtain rises and the real show finally begins. And that's exactly what went down at Rebecca Minkoff today, when Nashville duo Wild Cub singlehandedly transformed the final runway prep into a groovefest— makeup artists, stylists, and photographers included. After all, the New York designer is no stranger to recruiting bands to spice up the traditional catwalk soundtrack (she's had Theophilus London and THE GOASTT perform in the past), but felt that Wild Cub's clap-happy pop vibe particularly resonated to her Fall collection. "It's one of those weird things when you don't know if anyone is ever actually listening to your music, but Rebecca contacted us a few weeks ago and said she's been playing it in her office," frontman Keegan DeWitt told us. "She said it worked great with her new collection." Rebecca was right. As Keegan and bandmate Jeremy Bullock performed their single "Thunder Clatter" while models paraded in leather separates, pinstripes, and holographic accessories, this music-fashion collision was THE epitome of effortless cool.

Andrej Pejic and her Galore collab t-shirt.
Photo: Getty Images/Courtesy of Galore/Prince and Jacob

The world of fashion collaborations isn't limited to pop stars and rappers. Not if Andrej Pejic has anything to do with it. The androgynous model has teamed up with Galore magazine's Prince Chenoa and Jacob Dekat for the collaborative tee she wore to the Galore Fashion Week party earlier this week, kicking off what Pejic has told us will evolve into a full line of t-shirts. "I've definitely always wanted to launch something in fashion," Pejic explained, "This t-shirt with Galore is just a warm up, actually, since I plan to start my own line of t-shirts. I'm launching it with my website that will be up in a month. I decided I needed to be more interactive with my fans since nobody knows my fans better than I do. I want to be able to communicate with them so it'll feature a blog and news updates." Exciting!

mark mcnairy angel haze

Mark McNairy and Angel Haze at the Mark McNairy Fall 2013 Lookbook shoot.
Photo: MTV

Mark McNairy is a goddamned boon. The bespectacled, becammo'd designer makes womenswear that upholds every tenet of why we love him as a menswear designer. It's maddeningly rare but dude just gets it and his cannily shrunken, sleek silhouettes for A/W 2013 are proof. That he invited one of our favorite new artists Angel Haze to follow in the footsteps of the hilarious-and-all-around-GREAT-for-morale Danny Brown to model his latest, made his A/W look book shoot that much more enticing. We're grateful to have been granted access to poke around with our cameras.

Most of y'all know we've been stoking a healthy Twitter-stalk of Mark and Angel's budding friendship for weeks but even we were surprised to see how intimate and collaborative the process was. Sure, we were all in close quarters but there was an awesome back-and-forth between the entire crew (which also included Mark's lovely and intelligent daughter Daisy) about styling details, what shoes made more sense and whether we plain liked what hat went with what pants. Angel's hysterical and outspoken glam squad weighed in heavily... as is a glam squad's wont (LOVE YOU; MEAN IT).

With a day of sprinting to shows, frenzied photographers and flashbulbs - not to mention the fabulous clothes - under our belts, we're getting back in the hang of this little thing called Fashion Week again. As we dig our heels into the shows that lie ahead for the Fall 2013 season, it's nice to see that celebrities haven't missed a stride on the red carpet.
