Nicole Richie Street Style

In case you missed it, last night was the premiere of Fashion Star, a reality competition show where designers fight to get their pieces bought by some of the biggest brands in the game (think: Saks Fifth Avenue, H&M, Macy's). To give the designers some sartorial guidance, celebrities with mega fashion lines came out to give their two cents, including Jessica Simpson, John Varvatos, and Nicole Richie. Personally, we've always backed Nicole's expanding fashion empire—everything from her fun accessories at House of Harlow 1960 to her boho chic Winter Kate clothing line—so it's no surprise that we were seriously digging her street style as she was out and about promoting her new show this week. Get those pens out because it's time for us to take some notes!

The great blogosphere has birthed all kinds of crazy young talent wizards who sing, dance, dress, and write better than most adults, and many would argue the blogger revolution began with Tavi Gevinson and her pal Spencer Tweedy. These two prodigious teens from the greater Chicago area have been charming the internet for the past few years with precocious musings and self-styled photo ops full of whimsical petulance. (They can count the entire MTV Style staff as fans!) As you might already know, Ms. Gevinson—one of our girls to watch in 2012—created and edits the online teen girl magazine, Rookie, and aside from being the son of indie rock royalty, namely Wilco lead singer Jeff Tweedy, Spencer makes music and music videos which he posts to his namesake website. He recently posted a video he made for the Wilco song "Whole Love" featuring his younger brother and Tavi, and we're totally smitten.

Azealia Banks

Photo: Courtesy of Vice Style

Oh man, this Azealia Banks 212 video has been making my LIFE for WEEKS now, to where I’ve been watching it on repeat because there’s something so gloriously s*** eating and triumphant about the entire operation. The chick just smiles, licks her teeth, flails her arms, raps, and sing-yells in front of brick wall in a Mickey Mouse sweater, ripped-up jorts, and these quadruple braid pigtail things and her baby hair’s all, HAAAAAY, and it’s fantastic because who cares since her face is just so beautiful.

And it’s not just one of those, "Her face is so empirically beautiful because blablabla GoldenRatio…" or anything like that, it’s her EYES. Impossibly long lashes framing surreal-steez BRIGHT whites and this glitter of unadulterated trouble, nevermind the filth that’s coming out of her mouth because the lyrics to her insanely catchy, ridic winsome single are down right friggin’ purple. It’s the best.

Evan Rachel Wood Venice Film Festival.

If there was anyone who held a gigantic fashion beacon of light at the Venice Film Festival, it had to be Evan Rachel Wood, who made quite the statement by choosing to wear nothing but black and white. Looking like a cross between a classic film star and a French New Wave starlet, she evoked a sense of modern glamour every time she stepped onto the red carpet. She also kept the trend going during the day, going so far as to kick out a suit with matching-hued houndstooth pumps. How many young Hollywood stars wear the exact same colors appearance after appearance yet manage to keep each look exciting? Not many, people! It's a BOLD choice for sure (even a cheeky one when you think about it), but much like her penchant for eye-raising paramours (hi, Marilyn Manson, who's probably totally reading this right now), we think Evan Rachel Wood's style is both dramatic and inspirational. Also? We can mimic it on a modest budget.

It’s not enough that Tom Felton is tall, witty, and comes with a cute British accent (which makes every word out of his mouth seem both clever and charming). No, the star of Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (in theaters today!) also happens to be a style savant with a penchant for deliciously skinny ties and polished blazers. When we can drag our eyes away from those piercing baby blues and lips that seem perpetually pressed into an adorable smirk (Emma Watson, aka GODDESS, had a crush on him, people), we’re focusing on his killer sartorial choices. After careful study, we’ve concluded that 23-year-old Tom is indeed Slyther-ing to the top of our style charts (hahaahaha... [SUCK IT, we’re going through Draco withdrawal]).

Like any pro, Tom sticks to a few signature trends and breezily repeats them (with elegant results) on the red carpet. We break them down for you here.

Rupert Grint in Tom Felton Shirt

Rupert Grint showing his love for Tom Felton at the "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" premiere in Los Angeles.

So everyone is all charmed by the cast of Harry Potter being such "great mates" and whatnot, but secretly we suspect it to be some sort of party line. We all know that they'll move on and get their new projects and shed their Harry Potter images (MUCH LIKE THE EPILOGUE IN THE BOOKS!) and Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson will merely be misty, water-colored memories. Except the FEELINGS right now are as heartfelt as ever. Um, Rupert Grint showed up to his buddy Tom Felton's premiere (they share, among many things, a dry, completely British sense of humor and willingness to "Talk American") with such a declaration of love that it makes our wee ice nugget hearts stir a little. There is no other way to so advertise your devotion to an ex-castmate than to arrive at their first post-Harry premiere wearing a shirt saying "I LOVE TOM FELTON." (If only Ron and Draco got along this well in fiction. If only.)

Usher Nail Art

Summer's biggest trend is undoubtedly nail art. From rainbow colors to crazy patterns, loud nails are everywhere. But what if you're tired of neon, glitter, or various animal prints? What if you've already done the shattered look or want to stand apart from been-there-done-that stripes 'n' polka dots? We have the perfect solution: USHER NAILS. That's right. USHER NAILS. To be more specific, Usher by way of the bold 'n' bright fashion label Jil Sander nails. Let us explain…

MTV Pitchfork Street Style

Claire, Michelle, and Jen at Pitchfork 2011.
Photo: MTV Style

This weekend's Pitchfork Festival in Chicago was super hot. Yes, of course we mean the sweltering, near-100 degrees and the heaping piles of buzz bands (both "hot" indeed), but we are mostly referring to the hordes of fashionable, adorable concert goers. The blazingly rad styles we spotted gave the high noon sun a run for its money, and we've got to give it up to the ladies who let us snap their picture. Not only were they on their feet all day (sensible shoes!) and sweating their skin off (loose clothing!) but each one brought their own special brand of rocker cool to the concert. (For more on the festival, check out our pals Refinery 29's amazing Chicago blog.)

So not only did we get schooled on how to dress for steamy weather (Pitchfork staples included wrap sandals, bright prints anchored by solids, and leather satchels), but we spotted some styles we are going to be stealing all summer long.

Emily Browning's style evolution.
Photo: Getty Images

It was 2003 when we first spied Emily Browning, alongside fellow Aussie heavyweights Heath Ledger, Geoffrey Rush, and Naomi Watts, in the Irish-Australian tale Ned Kelly. We hardly noticed her playing the late Heath Ledger's younger sis, but then she landed the coveted role of the alluring Violet Baudelaire in Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events, where her dreamy looks and dramatic Victorian garb stole the show. Now, not only is she winning Hollywood over with her high cheekbones and cat eyes, but her continued appearance at fashion events worldwide indicates her star is rising on the red carpets as well. (ALTERNATE REALITY ALERT: She was also considered for Kristen Stewart's role in Twilight, which might have made Bella more fresh-faced and less brooding...but what is Bella without brooding?)

On top of being breathtakingly beautiful, a young Emily once aspired to be a fashion designer, which isn't surprising given her super-curated ensembles. Her quirky outfits belie a sense of maturity beyond her 22 years, borrowing hints of vintage and retro with prints, lace (a constant Emily staple), and then a bit of cheeky flair like bold lips or ruffled socks. And though she is still young and playing girl-power roles like Baby Doll in this year's Sucker Punch, she certainly gave more "established" style stars a run for their money when she appeared at the MET Gala's McQueen Opening wearing an exquisite high-necked gown by Marc Jacobs. We went absolutely bonkers over her grown-up red carpet steez, especially since Em's a pro at more low-key, relaxed looks.

Willow Smith wearing 'Fresh Prince' T-shirts on June 28 and 26, 2011.
Photo: Getty Images

So I may or may not have a grossly unhealthy obsession with Willow Smith. OK, really the entire Smith family. I mean, they're like the living, breathing Incredibles of the non-CGI entertainment world, and I kind of want them to adopt me (you know, if I didn't already have AWESOME parents of my own who read this every day). Well, taking a cue from the Biebs, Willow has hopped on the '90s sitcom homage T-shirt bandwagon and blessed the world with a double dose of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air tees, to which we exclaim a resounding "YES!"

What sends the cute factor through the roof and absolutely crushes any other iterations of this trend (don't hurt me, Beliebers/Bieber Army/Navy) is that Willow can wear her own DAD emblazoned across her chest. Granted, I could wear an airbrushed crewneck of my dad windsurfing in coral swim trunks and a graphic neon yellow tank (if this picture lived on the internet, BETTA BUHLIEVE I would link it), but it just wouldn't have quite the same effect. My only hope is that other celeb-spawn start rocking their parents' visages à la cotton body billboards. *AHEM* Zoe Kravitz. Lourdes Leon. I'm talking to you.
