Who would have thought that NOT wearing a dress could cause such a stir?! Who would have thought that Anne Hathaway could be so controversial?! We never would have pegged the now-Academy-Award-winning actress as either the progenitor of a meme or as the spark for a firestorm, but that's exactly what went down at the Oscars on Sunday night. One of the preferred activities of fashion pundits is, of course, to speculate about what the biggest names on the carpet are going to wear, and Anne was thought to be a no-brainer. "She'll wear Valentino!" they all said, and moved on to the less predictable starlets. It was something of a shock, therefore, for Anne to take the red carpet not in her trusty Valentino, but in the pink Prada dress heard round the world Twittersphere. While Anne's "les nipperables" moment may have take center stage to the designer she had chosen to wear, once the meme-frenzy died down heads began to be scratched. Anne was quoted on the red carpet mentioning over and over that she had chosen her dress mere hours before hopping in her limo and heading to the ceremony, so there was definitely an air of something a little fishy going on. We, on the other hand, are extremely familiar with the last minute quick change, as we frequently get almost all the way out the door before deciding that we have on the wrong shoes, or necklace, or, well, whole outfit! So, what's the big deal anyway? We unpack the great dress debate after the jump!

It's not just the Oscars ceremony itself that draws hoards of well-heeled starlets, ladies turn it out for the parties during and after the show, too. One of the biggest, most anticipated annual Oscar parties is Vanity Fair's which often boasts a stacked Young Hollywood guest list CHOCK full of shimmering, glittering, pretty young thangs. Last night's Vanity Fair Oscar Party was certainly no exception as a major trend for party-goers was dresses that shone and glinted in the light.

channel dinner

It's easy to get swept up in the Oscars in and of itself, but now that we're finally out of our Academy Awards hangover, it's time to see what ELSE was happening in the buildup to the big event. Earlier this week Chanel hosted a pre-Oscars dinner in Los Angeles, and spoiler alert: the party was filled to the brim with some of our favorite Hollywood PYTs looking amazing. Shocking, we know. It should probably go without saying that the stars were decked out in clothes courtesy of French fashion house (jealous!), but despite the fact that they were wearing the same designer, the attendees opted for one of two trends: light and dark. Take Chloe Moretz and Kate Bosworth, who skipped the official Oscars ceremony but still showed off their rad outfits early. The actresses looked totally adorable wearing Chanel shift dresses and basic round pumps, Chloe in an off-white tweed minidress, and Kate in a ladylike pale pink number. And then could who ever forget Jessica Chastain?! The Best Actress nominee stopped by the dinner wearing a pleated white frock with glittery embellishment, rounding out the ethereal light-hued trio perfectly. While these girls went pretty and angelic, fellow trendsetters Lily Collins, Zoe Kravtiz, and Ginnifer Goodwin took the opposite approach in gothy-glam dark looks.

Michelle Obama

There were a lot of surprises at tonight's 2013 Oscars, but our favorite has to have been the reveal of Michelle Obama presenting the award for "Best Picture" to Argo. A grinning and bow tied Jack Nicholson introduced his special presenting guest: Madame FLOTUS who appeared via satellite video from the White House. Breaking away from the White House Oscar party, Michelle twirled toward camera wearing a STUNNING Naeem Khan gown covered in zillions of silver beads that glittered in the camera lights.

Paging Captain Obvious: it's been a loooong road to the Oscars for Jennifer Lawrence. But after countless interviews, award shows, and even a bout with pneumonia, the Best Actress WINNER (!!) chose THE perfect gown to culminate her Academy Award journey. Crafted by Christian Dior with a dramatic mermaid silhouette, an all-over leaf pattern, and a epic voluminous skirt, J.Law's dress fits her like haute couture glove. She's a superstar on so many levels here, and we can't ever get enough.

We may have come to know Zooey Deschanel for her creative nail art at award shows (from film strips at the Golden Globes to retro TVs at the Emmys), but we were thrown for a loop when she showed up with a brand new HAIR CUT at the Vanity Fair Oscars party after the big show. And we're not just talking a trim, or new bangs. The New Girl star completely chopped her luscious long locks for a sleek and stunning bob, which has been a growing trend for celebs this year.

By now it should be more than obvious that Jessica Chastain is not only incredible onscreen (she's up for Best Actress in Zero Dark Thirty) but a total style MVP as well. And as we learned on the Oscars red carpet tonight, the fashion world's love affair with Jessica is totally mutual! The flame-haired beauty chatted with MTV on the red carpet tonight about her "fashion-gasm" moment in her nude Armani Privé couture gown. "What I love so much about the dress is that it's a throwback to the glamour of Old Hollywood," she told Josh Horowitz and Janell Snowdon. "It's a Happy Birthday, Mr. President kind of a dress." Um, we'll say! So let's all join Jessica in obsessing over her dress, shall we? Get the scoop from the star herself in the exclusive video below!

Anne Hathaway Oscars

Anne Hathaway might be channeling Audrey Hepburn on the red carpet tonight in her pale pink Prada gown, but let's be real— the star's Old Hollywood ensemble isn't the ONLY reason people are buzzing about her Oscars look. OK, so there's no avoiding it: the darts across Anne's chest coupled with the chilly L.A. weather makes her wardrobe malfunction entirely too obvious, and everyone is taking notice. #Hathawaynipples is now blowing up on Twitter, and you know what that means. Exactly a year later since Angelina Jolie's statement pose rocked everyone's world, the social media universe just mayyyy have finally found its replacement for @Angiesrightleg. *shifts eyes uncomfortably* Scene stealers, much?!

Quvenzhané Wallis Oscars

Finally! Oscar night is officially off and running, people, and leave it to Quvenzhané Wallis to start things on a seriously high fashion note. The 9-year-old Best Actress nominee (she's up for her star-making turn in Beasts of the Southern Wild) was one of the early attendees on the red carpet tonight, practically OOZING adorableness in a midnight blue dress from Giorgio Armani. The princessy custom frock, which is embellished with rhinestones over layers of tulle, comes courtesy of the Italian label's Armani Junior collection. Oh, and get this— Quvenzhané's the very first person to rock it on the red carpet! So basically what we're saying is, she's not ONLY making Oscar history as the youngest nominee, but she's making fashion history, too. Girl is on fire! We've been waiting to see if the actress would carry one of her 20 (!!) signature puppy purses on the red carpet, and she did NOT disappoint. Meet Sammy the dog, who's also glammed up in a formal tutu and a tiara. Hey, it IS the Oscars, after all...
