Selena Gomez Tour Dress

Not to sound old fogey, but recent pics from Selena Gomez's concert tour make us feel like proud "baby girl's grown up!" parents seeing our former Disney child star transform herself into such a superstar young lady. Besides turning 19 last week (my, how the days go by), Miss G posed for Elle Mexico in a series of sophisticated designer ensembles complete with voluminous hair and mature makeup to match her rising style-star status. Now our girl's headlining a summer concert tour and bringing down the house every night in sparkle-pony showstoppers like this Vegas glitter-gal number. I mean, brains EXPLODIN'.

We love how the shaggy, natural hair and minimal makeup keep Selena fresh and youthful when adorned in all of that bedazzle. Even though Selena's ramping up her style game, she's choosing to stay both classy and true to her age. Speaking of age, our li'l lady has a new, YOUNGER BF—some kid by the name of Justin Bieber. All we have to say is, keep making our PRIDE and JOY happy, Justin B. Every gossip mag on earth may have declared you Boyfriend of the Year—what with all of the hand holding, gift giving, and innocent smooching. But make no mistake, we've got our eyes on you.

Kanye West and Lil Wayne recently announced that they're each designing their own clothing lines. Both rappers have highly anticipated new albums on the horizon and both are known for their stylistic flair. Thus, what kind of style might we expect from these two budding designers? More importantly, who would you rather wear: Team Yeezy or Team Weezy?

EMA, Twin Sister, and Zola Jesus Perform at the 2011 Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, Illinois.
Photo: Getty Images

Summer festivals, like this past weekend's Pitchfork Festival, ain't a walk in a densely populated park: the crowds, the lines, the endless barefoot dancing. And the girls who brave the temps to get onstage to entertain the sweltering masses have it the toughest and earn our utmost respect (and gratitude. And space on our iPods). Not only do they perform with the sun beating down like a spotlight from hell, but they all look so cool belting out songs it almost looks easy (it isn't. At all).

We caught up with emerging rockers EMA, Twin Sister, and Zola Jesus in Chicago this weekend to hear a little bit about their music and a lot about their stage garb of choice. Not only do we have three new girl crushes, but each of these ladies has a style as distinctive as their sound.

Taylor Momsen performs with The Pretty Reckless in Barcelona, Spain, on July 6.
Photo: Getty Images

Good Lord. All right, *girds loins* I realize that The Pretty Reckless and Taylor Momsen have some seriously devoted fans for a variety of perfectly valid reasons, but I can't help but be concerned about the increasingly debauched images that surface after one of her shows. I mean, we've joked ad infinitum that "No Pants Momsen" is wearing sheer leggings or very short shorts or some sort of smock that falls just shy of being a legitimate dress, and that she is therefore, "not wearing pants," but here she is wearing a T-shirt, boots and underwear.

And this isn't even the half of it. Well, it's exactly half of it because, WHY AREN'T HER FANS WEARING SHIRTS???

Ke$ha performing at the Conan Summer Concert Series on June 27, and Nicki Minaj at the American Music Awards in L.A. on Nov. 10

Last night when pop icon/glitter goddess Ke$ha kicked off the Conan Summer Concert Series, we could NOT get enough of her amazeballs rhinestone-encrusted structured skeleton bodysuit! She paired her bare-bones bustier with ripped double fishnet tights, lace-up boots, fingerless skeleton gloves, and, of course, bicep glitter and drawn-on dollar signs. But just as we removed our jeweler's loupe from our eyes (you know, the one we keep on a chain expressly for these purposes), we thought this macabre ensemble reminded us of someone else who bared her bones (heh) on the red carpet—Nicki Minaj. Remember, she sported that unforgettable peach and gold 3-D skeleton Manish Arora dress back at the American Music Awards, which really got us thinking—who wore bedazzled-3D-rib-cage-plus-some-ancillary-bones-that-may-or-may-not-be-anatomically-accurate better?

Jessie J performs at the Glastonbury Festival in Glastonbury, England, on June 25.
Photo: Getty Images

When we spotted British pop star (and fashion icon!) Jessie J performing at the 2011 Glastonbury Festival, we were more than a little impressed with her onstage ensemble, but we noticed something a bit strange—Jessie is sporting a GINORMOUS white boot! From whence did moon boot come? Did she break her leg? She did? And she's still performing? Whoa. Respect. Apparently Jessie J double fractured her left ankle after falling off the stage during a rehearsal (ouch), but you'd never know from her killer smile and seriously fierce aplomb.

At first glance, her Tron-inspired black and white jumpsuit makes our neck veins pulse with envy, but upon closer inspection, her beauty game is even MORE on lock. She rocked her characteristic, angular black bob with purple and gold rhinestones framing her royal purple peepers, which matched her lips in a solid shade of magenta. Her talon-esque gold nails complemented her huge doorknocker necklace and two-finger wing ring PERFECTLY. And we even think it's cute how she wore Wellies on stage just like the muddy crowd. Awww. Our girl deserves that velvet throne—even with a broken ankle she STILL reigns fashion queen.

Robyn at the JFK Terminal/JetBlue Lounge.

After we had seventeen consecutive freak outs over the video collaboration between Rye Rye and Robyn for the slow jam "Never Will Be Mine", we went on a hunt. Where did these genius street looks come from? Why are Robyn's Alexander McQueen leggings always mindblowing? And most importantly, where can we get Rye Rye's cut-out shirt with eyeballs emblazoned on the front? (Without it, we grow weak...)

When Robyn performed at the JetBlue Lounge on June 20th at JFK Airport (fresh off her tour with Katy Perry), we had to ask her about the looks. But Robyn has been on the road for over a year, meaning the Swede known for killer stage style has been forced to get, er, creative with her looks. In fact, the outfit she wore (complete with her signature platform Timberlands) inspired a slight sense of déjà vu. Which is fine, because it is the best déjà vu ever, filled with koi pants and snake prints and delicate Swedish pixie cuts. We caught up with her to talk fashion-shop.

For some, just deciding "what to wear" is too simple. They go above and beyond just agonizing over the fit of a dress, the hue of a nail polish, or the balance of a silhouette. Instead, a bold brave few of fashion-masochists take on, even revel in, the insane undertaking of MULTIPLE wardrobe changes for a one-night affair (to which we at MTV Style say, "AMEN! And more power to ya!" as we watch from the sidelines). At this year's MuchMusic Video Awards, two such ladies went head-to-head in a most unlikely match-up: co-host and burgeoning style star Selena Gomez versus musical act and reigning fashion icon Lady Gaga. Who do you think brought it the most?

Arriving at the awards, Selena wore a nude backless Burberry Prorsum dress with tiered ruffles and a pair of royal purple satin peep-toe Zanottis. Backstage, after accepting two awards, Lady Gaga wore a vintage Versace cobalt and black blazer and Technicolor graphic leggings (in keeping with her oath to wear only the designer's threads for the next two months) with gold studded platform booties. Who took the crown on this round?

Rihanna's Max Kibardin shoes for her 'Loud' tour.
Photo: Courtesy of PR Consulting/Max Kibardin

Bright colors in the summer certainly isn't groundbreaking, but Lil' Miss Rihanna may be directly responsible for turning this one into a hypercolored, multichromatic smorgasbord of neon. And to that, we give props. For her Loud tour that kicked off early in June, Rihanna had to up the already flamboyant quotient, and for her footwear she tapped shoewear designer Max Kibardin, who has already made his musical imprint with the mind-blowing, actually functional guitar shoe. For her candy-coated, Swarovski-studded look, Max told us, "The inspiration was Cindy Crawford dressed in a vinyl trench from an old advertising campaign of Gianni Versace. (Stylist) Mel Ottenburg wanted to convey the same punk rock feeling, which I gave to a part of my summer collection." (Note: '90s Versace is really having a moment right now.) Of course, Max didn't want to just make a hot shoe: "The most important thing for me was designing shoes that Rihanna likes." With a chunky heel, patent leather and the most eye-catching colorblocking we've seen in this decade, how can Ms. Loud not want to wear these to every one of her shows?

Tupac Shakur in 1993 and at the 'I Like It Like That' premiere on Nov. 13, 1994.

Today would have been Tupac Amaru Shakur's 40th birthday, and while we respect his sizable contribution to the rap canon, we here at MTV Style believe it's most important to remember that dude was a babe. And that he frequently wore clothes of the '90s-awesome variety. In fact, his style was so iconic—from his overalls + rugby stripes, to his denim-on-denim Canadian tuxedos, to his allover camo, and his three-piece suits—that instead of picking just one moment, we've dedicated an entire gallery to his sartorial evolution. Like, his doo-rag was so recognizable that were you to draw the outline of his head in Hitchcockian fashion, you would immediately know who it belonged to, you know?
