Pharrell's "Happy" performance at the 2014 Oscars was backdropped with a giant screen of Despicable Me minions wearing their leader's Vivienne Westwood hat. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, Pharrell was wearing the hat again—THE HAT THAT MEMED THE WORLD. Inspired yet again by Malcolm McLaren's "Buffalo Gals" video, but ramped up a bit for the occasion, this time he copped his classic Adidas track jacket in black leather and a crispy, more formal classic black Buffalo crown. Twitter wondered if the sequined kicks on his feet were Red Octobers, but while they did mirror the all-over crimson of Yeezy's feet, we vote no. We're fairly certain he'd never wear Adidas with Nike at the same time, and we see some telltale triple stripes. He did match his mic and earpieces to his footwear, though, with rubied veneers glimmering like jewelry.

Sure, many of the Oscars most-anticipated awards are doled out for exemplary acting, but don't forget, it's a night of musical performances, too. Gold statuettes of little bald men are awarded to Best Original Score AND Best Original Song winners, and often, there's time in the ceremony for the nominees to take the stage. As we gear up for Sunday night and the potential return of Pharrell's giant hat *fingers crossed*, we're looking back at some of the best performance outfits in Academy Awards history.

MADONNA IN 1991

Of course, we have to kick this off with Madonna. Arguably THE best Oscars onstage outfit of all time (IMHO), Madge channeled Marilyn Monroe for her performance of "Sooner or Later" from the Dick Tracy soundtrack.

Beyonce

We've been keeping track of Beyonce's Mrs. Carter Show wardrobe to an almost obsessive degree lately. (So have you. Don't try to deny it.) The new custom-made Versace pieces have surpassed all expectations, and the original design drawings posted to Bey's website are such a welcome bonus. Seeing the transition from sketch to stage is pretty remarkable, but we couldn't help noticing an obvious difference between the final product and OG design of that epic "Bow Down" moto jacket. It seems Donatella may have originally wanted the back to read "Bitches Bow Down" but ultimately, a slightly more PG version ended up on the piece.

Attention, up-and-coming female musicians: There's a new standard for "making it," and it ain't playing a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden. (Although, that's probably not a bad indication, either.) Just like Angel Haze before her and Iggy Azalea predating that (AND the incomparable Grace Jones ahead of them all), Rita Ora made a surprise appearance at Philipp Plein's runway show yesterday, providing the live soundtrack for his "American Dream"-themed Fall 2014 collection.

Ora emerged on the stage from a custom-made, black matte El Camino, wearing a black, ruffled, high-low skirt (#RitasLeftLeg), a sweater with a gold braided band, and a gold studded ten-gallon hat and matching studded cowboy boots. And while her entire outfit was no doubt provided by the designer himself, Ora got SERIOUSLY hooked up with those boots—which, at the time of her show-opening performance, hadn't even gone down the runway yet. (But when they did, NAOMI CAMPBELL was rocking them in silver.)

Beyonce

True to our prediction, Beyonce’s Mrs. Carter Show wardrobe got a major refresh. Bey didn’t only recruit Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci to design ***flawless duds for her post-visual album set, she also tapped Donatella Versace. We didn’t exactly see that one coming, though. Tom Ford seemed like a likelier match given the designer’s love of the Carter family (see: the custom heels he made for Blue Ivy, all of the times Bey has worn him, and, of course, his most recent collection, inspired by Jay Z’s song named for him #meta). Although Donatella has pretty much pledged her allegiance to Lady Gaga, let's be real: Who isn’t vying to dress Beyonce?

Last night in Glasgow, the Mrs. Carter Show audience was treated to performances of new songs from Beyonce’s self-titled opus and, naturally, new costumes. After all, this is the songstress who made a whopping 17 videos for each new song with exponentially more outfits—there was no way she’d skimp on the clothes for her new post-album set. So Beyonce recruited her designer BFFs like Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci to draw up some new wares for her tour. NBD. (He's responsible for her above “***Flawless” look.)

Hot on the heels of Tom Ford's "knockoff of the knockoff" Molly dresses making their London Fashion Week debut, Beyonce is casting the spotlight yet again in the direction of Jay Z-loving French brand BBP. After performing "XO" at the Brit Awards—her first time back on that stage in 10 years—Bey wore her glittering blue Vrettos Vrettakos dress straight onto the plane. But not before swapping out her Gianmarco Lorenzi heels for sneaker wedges and shrugging on this BBP "Picasso Baby" jacket.

Lorde

Rihanna may be the leading advocate for "red carpet goth,” but her peer Lorde is hot on her heels, owning it all awards season long. Remember her dip-dyed fingers at the Grammys? Well, Lorde's look was even darker today at the Brit Awards where she wore a vampy broken disco ball of a floor-length Tom Ford gown. Ella took the black sparkly creation up one notch on the goth scale with the addition of the trusty brick-soled platform boots she’s stepped out wearing many times before and her signature deep purple lipstick. With the exception of her pout, her beauty look was all about her hair—much like her V cover and, you know, always.

There are some things about history that you'll never learn in school. Like, for example, what a modern day rave might have looked like in ancient Egypt. Thankfully, Katy Perry was able to fill in that blank during her performance today at the 2014 Brit Awards. After previewing her Egyptian-themed video for "Dark Horse" last week, Perry had all of Britain bowing down before her when she took the stage as the magical, mystical, totally trippy Queen Katy Patra.

Perry Patra descended upon her (mostly) shirtless subjects aboard a golden chariot, as Egyptian queens do, wearing a high-neck, neon leotard with a coordinating jacket that may or may not have been stolen from the tomb of Isis. (JK, it's all custom-made by Nicolas Jebran, and I seriously doubt color technology was this advanced back then anyway.)
