It’s been almost 24 hours since the Met GalaPunk: From Chaos To Couture” red carpet began, and we’re still spinning from all the studs and safety pins. We saw a ton of Givenchy, some vintage Valentino, some significant Stella McCartney and then, bursting from between the throngs of these famed designers, we saw five different looks from Topshop. Yep. That’s right—the Topshop that you yourself can afford to shop at. The most surprising part? We couldn't tell the difference between the high end and the high street.

Joan Smalls with Tom Ford and Karlie Kloss at the 2013 Met Gala.

Is there anything we love more than seeing our beautiful House Of Style hosts, Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss, looking STUNNING on one of the biggest—both literally and figuratively—red carpets of the year? NOPE. Lucky for us they absolutely shine on literally every carpet they walk, but we have to say that the twosome were in especially fine form at the 2013 Met Gala. Joan was on the arm of Tom Ford, who outfitted her in a stunning black lace gown with the most amazing combination of figure flattering cling and floor brushing draping that we think we've ever seen. Her beauty look was simple, with a dark eye and bare lip, but she made a nod to the gala's "Punk: Chaos to Couture" theme with straight, side parted ombre locks. Karlie, on the other hand, walked the carpet solo, but it was clear which house was her sartorial partner in crime: Louis Vuitton.

It was the question heard 'round the world (and the interwebs) ever since we first got word of 2013's Met Gala theme: HOW do you dress for "Punk: Chaos to Couture"?! Well, the rebellious rough-and-tumble inspiration for tonight's main event may have thrown some attendees for a loop, but that's OK, because we found more than enough style stars to stay true to theme and shake things up on the red carpet. Of COURSE mainstays like Debbie Harry, Donatella Versace, and Vivienne Westwood did it right—that much should have been given. But the ladies we're calling out below are the ones who surprised us by their unexpected loyalty to the theme, those who weren't afraid to go beyond the safety pins and a few statement studs. So let's all give a round of applause for the most creative, most committed punk-themed Met Gala outfits of the night, shall we?

CARA DELEVINGNE IN BURBERRY

If there's anyone we can count on to get down with a theme, it's this girl! Cara Delevingne may be a supermodel, but you'd better bet she went all-out punk tonight in a custom studded Burberry dress. Rocking that seriously plunging V-neck like there's no tomorrow and showing off her Genevieve Jones earpiece with a deep side part, we ALL wish we could make punk somehow look that...well, pretty? Sigh.

Katy Perry Nail Art Met Gala

By now you've probably peeped ALL the insane Met Gala red carpet looks, but have you seen the nail art?! Everyone from Katy Perry to Rita Ora to Nicole Richie sported super ornate manis that we NEED to discuss. KP matched her embellished Dolce & Gabbana ensemble with equally decked-out nails. She layered blue and pink glitter over gold polish and finished the look with gold pyramid studs and ruby gems. WERK.

Kim Kardashian, Paloma Faith

A funny thing happened on the 2013 Met Gala red carpet. No, not the thing where Beyonce paid homage to Katniss Everdeen. It was the thing where Kim Kardashian and Paloma Faith both implemented a styling choice we have no better term for at 1 AM than "glove sleeves." The rare fashion phenomenon of gloves sleeves, as you've probably already deduced, happens when a garment's sleeve does not end with a hem or a cuff and instead, extends and splinters into fingers. It's definitely a look and one that caught us by surprise tonight, especially because not one but TWO ladies sported the look down the "Punk: Chaos to Couture" step-and-repeat. And what's more punk than unabashedly wearing something almost no one understands?

Madonna arrived last to the 2013 Met Ball in custom Givency.

After Beyonce took to the carpet, I have to say, a sigh of relief could be heard from the press lined up along either side of the red staircase at the 2013 Met Gala. With King Bey in the house, it had to be all over, didn't it? *Knowing smirk* The Met Gala may have had their king, but there was still one queen who had not arrived. I'm talking of course, about Madonna, the queen of pop incarnate. Just after Bey made her way all the way through the museum's gilded doors, the tell-tale explosion of flashbulbs and European-accented shouting bubbled up from the photo pit, and our sighs caught in our throats. Madonna had entered, wearing an all-over studded, tartan Givenchy blazer fastened over a fishnet bodysuit and very little else. Well no, that's not true. Although Madge's fantastic gams were on prominent display, there was a whole lot going on in her ensemble, including my personal favorite detail: an oversize padlock choker engraved with the letter 'M.' There were so many more things though! From the cross hanging down the back of her ensemble like a sacrilegious tail to her bright red lips and magenta pumps, there were countless details, each one elevating the ensemble to new heights of punk rock perfection.

Katy Perry Met Gala

Just when you think you've seen it all on tonight's Met Gala red carpet, Katy Perry saunters in wearing one of the most stunning ensembles of the night. She was DECKED. OUT. in an embellished Dolce & Gabbana fall/winter 2013 frock (yes, from the same collection in which we Photoshopped Beast Jesus' face on select pieces of clothing because it is hilarious/amazing/makes life worth living) with a bedazzled crown, oversized gold cross earrings, and giant gold cocktail rings. If y'all could see this dress up close, you'd DIE at the beading detail, so it's no wonder she opted for black ankle strap wedges and not much else!

Jennifer Lawrence

Sequins. In a movement marked by studs, zippers, and razors, they're not exactly the MOST punk-centric outfit embellishment we can think of. But then again, Jennifer Lawrence fully admitted on the Met Gala's vogue.com red carpet livestream tonight that "I never went through the punk phase. I guess tonight I'm supposed to say 'yes' but no. I was a cheerleader." And this honesty, Jenn, is exactly why we love you. The actress might not be a reformed punk, but she proved her star power nonetheless in a stunning strapless gown by Dior.

Rita Ora

No matter what the occasion, no matter what time of year, we can ALWAYS count on Rita Ora to turn it out on the red carpet in full fashion glory. And tonight’s Met Gala was no different, with the singer's feet firmly planted on the pretty side of the punk scale in a shimmery Thakoon dress. The all-white custom-designed number came adorned with glistening stripes and baring just a sliver of stomach (um, not to mention, a sky-high slit!), making Rita one of the few stars tonight who took a lighter approach to punk. While many attendees have been known to change up their outfit choices up to the very last second at events like these, this pop star knew what she wanted weeks ago… and stuck with that vision. According to her stylist Jason Rembert, “The look was set for a month and a half. Thakoon sent over a sketch that Rita and I fell in love with,” he explained over email. “[It] was great to have a more classic approach to the punk theme.”

Nicki Minaj

We've said it before and we'll say it again: we are so into Nicki Minaj's new look. Gone are the days of loud neon prints and so-bright-it-could-blind-you wigs. The reigning queen of Young Money recently took a turn for the real, opting for a more "relatable look" that's both dressed down and cleaned up. Nicki kept her new look on lock when she walked the red carpet tonight at the Met Gala in a sleek navy blue Tommy Hilfiger gown. Baring some side ab with an on-trend cut out design, the "High School" hip hop star added dark red lips and matching nails to off-set her fierce platinum blonde—and VERY punk—hair. Part '70s style afro, part '80s crimped curls, Nicki paid homage to the gala theme with her 'do more than her dress. We're feeling the texture almost as much as we're digging those deep dark roots. Colorists are for clowns; give dem punks a bottle of bleach and a few months of grow out and you're ready to rage.
