Vans Platform Sneakers

Welp, we can officially die now. Vans took their skate sneakers to the next level (literally) by creating platform versions of their traditional high-top shoes. Basically, this means there's three extra inches of awesome here, people. *high-fives entire world* Finally, us ladies have a step-up (heh) on the male skater competition with these bad boys, which are available to purchase on shop.vans.com right this second! First up, one of the most iconic designs from Vans' classics collection—the ol' black and white side stripe—has been transformed into a bold, three-inch creeper-meets-sporty sneaker platform that we just love. We could wear these with literally anything in wardrobe (think: printed jeans or floral dresses) and for just $80, these are kind of a steal! Cha-ching.

Katy Perry wearing her Free People denim jacket with sweater sleeves in New York City.
Photo: Getty

We may spend a lot of time talking about Katy Perry's performance and red carpet style, but don't think we don't know that the singer has some killer street style game as well. She may be a fan of outrageous hair and killer nails, but Katy also goes casual sometimes, but she's always totally on trend. Most recently we've seen her wearing the crap out of one of our favorite trends, which is the classic denim jacket with a twist: sweater sleeves. In a sea of leather--be it denim and leather hybrids or straight up Grease style biker jackets--the denim jacket is a staple that can be endlessly customized to fit the wearers personal style. We could go on for days about acid wash and paint and embroidery, but today, it's the sweater sleeve that we're most interested in. Katy's particular jacket, which incorporates not only sweater sleeves but also bleach spots and fraying, is Free People's 'Cypress' Denim Sweater Sleeve Jacket, and you can buy it from Nordstrom for $198. There are a number of more wallet friendly options after the jump, and we'll also tell you the super easy way to hack this trend with things you might already have in your closet.

Gotye

A still from Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" music video featuring Kimbra.
Photo: Eleven

Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" was one of the biggest runaway musical successes of the year. Not only was the heart-wrenching ballad a colossal radio hit, the music video for the track featuring Kimbra was awesomely iconic to the point where it earned its own SNL Digital Short starring the singer himself. Given all of the above, we think getting a group of three (yes, THREE) together to be this video for Halloween is a guaranteed costume winner. Given all of that, we've hacked a way for you to do it yourself. Roll up your sleeves, warm up your credit card, and LEGGO!

The "Somebody That I Used To Know" costume is definitely not for the faint of heart. While it doesn't demand you IDENTICALLY replicate the abstract geometric designs of the original video, you should be sure that all of the lines and colors match and meet appropriately. Cop yourself a nude unitard and a grip of paints (fabric for the onesie and face for, well, your face), and get to work with some foam brushes! You'll need black eyeliner to define the lines on your face and neck and a laundry marker to draw lines on the unitard (and don't forget a ruler!).

+ Unitard: Capezio Adult Long Sleeve Unitard ($34.00)
+ Eyeliner: Maybelline Unstoppable Eyeliner in Black ($5.64)
+ Fabric Marker: Sanford Rub-A-Dub Laundry Marker ($0.94)
+ Paint: Tulip Soft Fabric Paint, Neutral 5 Pack
+ Face Paint: Wolfe Face Paints in Skinz Fair ($3), Wolfe Face Paints in Skinz Rich Ivory ($3), Snazaroo Face Paints in Rust Brown ($2.50), and Snazaroo Face Paints in Light Grey ($2.50)
+ Brushes: Linzer 8501-S Foam Brush Set ($1.19)
+ Ruler: Westcott Non-Shatter Ruler ($1.02)

Alexa Chung wore a Topshop dress in New York City.
Photo:Getty Images/ Topshop

When it comes to dream celebrity wardrobes we'd love to raid, Alexa Chung's closet is right up at the top of the list. This is a girl who sets trends, period. Sure, she may claim that she's just "ripping off Jane Birkin" with her oft-copied outfits, but we're still giving her major props for bringing that trademark tomboyish-prepster style to a whole new generation. After all, she was wearing cat flats before pretty much EVERYONE else...and now some of our other favorite style stars are following suit. She also manages to make denim overalls look, well, good, and can pull off cutesy bows in a way that's cool, not kiddie. So it's not that surprising that Alexa was on top of her style game yet again in New York City recently, working an adorable black to Glamour magazine's "These Girls" event. What IS surprising, however, is that the dress comes courtesy of one of our favorite fast fashion retailers- Topshop.

Urban Outfitters Lisa Frank

Vintage Lisa Frank at Urban Outfitters!
Photo: Via Urban Outfitters

We may be hallucinating, but we're pretty sure our childhood has come back to haunt us via rainbow-emblazoned Trapper Keepers. *rubs eyes* Oh, yep, it's definitely back, and it's got Lisa Frank's name/neon color scheme written all over it. Today, Urban Outfitters debuted—get this—an entire collection of vintage Lisa Frank goodies, and it's the REAL deal, y'all. Like, we're not talking about her new clothing line that hit the web last winter, we're talking about the actual '80s and '90s technicolor sticker sheets, notebooks and folders that the smaller, scrunchie-sporting versions of ourselves used to carry oh-so-happily down our elementary school hallway. *squee* Suddenly, it feels like our 40-hour work week could go by just a wee bit faster if we could stare at a panda in cuffed overalls wearing a too-tiny hat painting rainbows all day! Wait, that actually exists—in binder form—and it's only $35. Yessssss. Also, we're gonna need to jazz up our cubicle a little bit, so we should probably swipe a couple of these jumbo sticker sheets while we're here.

Taylor Swift rolling stone

Taylor Swift on the November issue of 'Rolling Stone' and in New York City.
Photo: via Rolling Stone's Facebook / Splash News

It's football season, ya'll, and who better to kick it off than THE ultimate homecoming queen herself, Taylor Swift? The pop star lands the November cover of Rolling Stone magazine decked out the ultimate sporty-meets-collegiate duds, proving that you don't have to be a hardcore jock to get in on the trend. We first spotted the look on Taylor out and about in New York City about a month ago, and now we're glad to know the real reason behind her adorable outfit. Dressed in light brown shorts, tomboyish oxfords, and a basic white t-shirt under a killer varsity jacket, it's enough to convince ANYONE that these high school staples are back in fashion.

Taylor Swift and her brand new, special edition Keds.
Photo: Photography by Brian Doben ©2012 Firefly Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

First things first: We've been listening to Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble," the latest single from her upcoming album Red, on repeat in the most serious way ever since it was released. We might need an intervention soon, we'll let you know. To put it lightly, we are REALLY excited to hear the full album, and have October 22nd circled on our calendars (in red, duh). We also have another way to celebrate the release now, thanks to our favorite sneakers, Keds. The classic footwear brand announced this morning that they are signing Taylor for a three year collaborative deal, as they re-launch their brand as a women's only label. We've been wearing pair after pair of white Keds' Champions into the ground for years (although not that many pairs, they last a long time given the abuse we put them through), as have some of our fashion icons (most notably Sleigh Bells singer Alexis Krauss), but we might just have to switch up our color preference now that we've seen the first pair Taylor is coming out with. The sneaks, which are being released on the same day as her record, are, you guessed it, red!

Das Racist

Das Racist for Moss.
Photo: Courtesy of Moss New York's Facebook

Putting Das Racist in a streetwear campaign, let alone one governed by as much New York heart and tongue-in-cheek humor as Moss, is SUCH a good idea. It's the kind of perfect match that we really wish we had thought of ourselves. *princess waves goodbye to the missed opportunity* Heems and Dap (no Kool A.D. this time *sheds single tear*) star in the fall/winter lookbook (which, BTW, was shot entirely on an iPhone 5 in INSTAGRAM) walking around NYC, reenacting Grant Wood's "American Gothic", and exploring park foliage. And they do it all while wearing hyper-colorized, hyper-patterned tees, crewneck sweatshirts, and varsity jackets from Moss's most recent collection most of which you can actually cop RIGHT NOW (or at the very least, pre-order)!
