NastyGal and Eastpak backpacks.

We can't explain it, but backpacks totally have a bad rap. Maybe it's the feelings of impending homework, or teachers, or tests *shudder*, but this back-to-school staple doesn't have to be only about lugging heavy textbooks through the hallway. If you ask us, backpacks are the one school supply that we'll happily keep with us even long after we've graduated. Besides the fact that they're actually useful (not many purses have the roominess of a good ol' rucksack), but thanks to goods from labels likeASOS to Baggu to, yes, even Mary-Kate and Ashley's The Row, the massive selection makes these double-duty accessories surprisingly stylish. We've rounded up our favorite back-to-school carryalls below.. Because, after all, we've got your back!

Selena Gomez

You guys know how we have a running Get The Look franchise. We see an outfit we really like on a celeb (usually in the wild because red carpet steez is exPENsive), and point you in the right direction to cop it for yourself. You've probably noticed that Selena Gomez crops up in these Get The Look a LOT - a product of equal parts her exemplary off-duty and the (in general) über-affordableness of it all since Sel frequents a lot of the same stores her fans do, from Forever 21 to Urban Outfitters to, of course, her own Dream Out Loud line for KMart. We keep you updated on where to snag our favorite Selena outfits as we see them, but if a comprehensive, super in-depth outline of Sel's wardrobe is what you're after, look no further than the seriously INCREDIBLE Selena's Closet Tumblr where a team of Selenators identify as many pieces of her outfits as possible, complete with links to buy, right down to the iPhone case!

It's not news that sneakers are having the heyday of a lifetime as part of the rampant pop culture '90s revival. Which, BTW, is great for those of us with two left feet who fall over ourselves like a newborn fawn at first sight of a pair of stilettos. Sneakers are comfortable, cool, and 100% on-trend. Also, they're totally back-to-school ready, so we've rounded up all the best kicks for your return to class after a deserved summer break.

Go ladylike chic with these no-lace printed kicks from Keds ($44.99) or these Liberty-printed Nike ($80.00) Lady Cortez sneakers. Infuse some fashion into your workout with these pastel polka-dotted Nike ($132.56) Free Trainers or show of your wild side with a pair of leopard-print SuperGa ($72.91) plimsolls.

Listen, we don't want to harsh your fun summer vibes, but the cold truth is that school starts in less than a month. *does Home Alone-style scream* But hey, it's not ALL bad! Now is the time of year when you can finally jazz up that wardrobe with fun fall pieces and pair those fresh duds with an even fresher summer glow. Hot! We figured the best way to get into the swing of things is with a super cool varsity jacket to throw on over any ensemble. They're totally on-trend but also act as the perfect transitional piece from summer into winter. Let's dive right in, shall we? WE SHALL.

STATEMENT PRINTS

Forgot the old go-to varsity jackets, these bad boys will instantly make you the coolest girl in school with their fierce statement-making patterns. Personally, we love the silk galaxy print number from Tideland ($75) and the F/W 2012 Jeremy Scott x adidas leopard zip-up that will hit stores later this summer. WERK!

Kigu Animal Tails

Kigu's Dinosaur and Fox tails.

Listen, guys. We're no strangers to cosplay here at MTV Style, and the discussion we're about to open on these Kigu animal tails should in NO way be considered a Judgey McMeanieFace finger pointed at the portmanteau of costumes and role-play. In truth, we LUHHHH it and find it fascinating. We merely want to alert you, the inquisitive public readership of this here style community, to the fact that these exist. And not just in the dinosaur and fox iterations you see above. Hook yourself up with a bushy squirrel tail, an S-curve lemur look, or the slightly more subtle lion steez, depending on whatever you fancy most. The question is: would you want to?

Can you believe it's already late July? It feels like just yesterday that we were longingly dreaming of sundresses and sandals, but still bundling up against the chill of winter. Nowadays we've gotten pretty attached to our uniform of maxi skirts, sandals and shorts, and as much as we're sick of the hot and sweaty city, we're also not looking forward to turning in our bare legs come fall. If you're headed back to school in addition to being headed back to cooler climes, you might have the additional worry of a dress code looming, which is why we wanted to look at some of our fave summer trends and show you how to make them backpack-ready come September!

You can work your sandals into fall with the right layers.
Photo: Madewell/Urban Outfitters/Swedish Hasbeens

We're literally dreading the day it gets too cold for us to wear our sandals anymore. We've fallen completely in lurve with clogs, particularly these natural leather numbers from Swedish Hasbeens, and the comfy and durable heels are going to stay on our feet until we get frost bite, just you wait (or we'll just get the boot version, heh). We're huge fans of layering, though, and with a pair of opaque tights like these from Urban Outfitters, which come in a variety of colors, you can extend the life of your favorite summer shoes, within reason. Sandals and socks is a much maligned sartorial move for a reason, so use your good judgment. Of course you can just add tights to your fave dress and sandals pairing and make it a little more fall-friendly (with a varsity jacket perhaps?) but why just do that when we can also back to school-ify another of the pieces we'll miss most come fall--shorts. We know tights and shorts is in no way breaking new ground, but there's a way to do this well and a way to, you know, just put some tights under your shorts (basic). We think the key here is to look outside of the denim shorts box. For this look we love a pair of not-too-tight-not-too-baggy tap shorts in an interesting, unique fabric, like this Pendleton-esque pair from Urban Outfitters ($39.00). Topped with a fitted, crisp white button down, like the True Love Shrunken Oxford from Madewell ($59.50), this is a look that could take you straight through homeroom into the weekend.

Rihanna Pineapple Rimper

Ever since we spotted Rihanna sporting a pineapple-printed romper while on vacay in Porto Cervo earlier this week, we can't stop thinking about it. I mean, we're always thinking about food 24/7, but the fact that she combined a summery onesie with one of our favorite fruits is kind of the best thing we've ever seen. When we went on a crazeballs internet hunt for this exact ensemble, and it turns out this Topshop number is completely sold out. :( Sadface times a million, right? Well, not quite! As it turns out, there's a boatload of pineapple-themed clothing and accessories out there that are JUST as cute (if not cuter!) that you can snatch up this very instant. First up, ASOS carries pretty pineapple pendant for just under $10. We repeat, IT'S UNDER 10 DOLLARS. It's a girly and subdued way to sport the fruity trend, and we love it uh-LOT. If you want pineapple jewelry with a little more kick, we like Melody Ehsani's bold mirrored acrylic earrings ($48) that are sure to make a statement. YUM.
