Nina Dobrev, Adrianne Palicki, and Lea Michele at the 63rd Emmy Awards.

Forgive us if words run together for a bit. We're just in such a state of paralyzing shock right now. It's just so rare that (A) a slew of starlets decide to swaddle themselves in the same color at the same event and (B) that a mere 10 minutes into an award ceremony's preshow red carpet coverage, we've already LOCKED down a trend. *wipes away a single happy tear* A resounding thank you to the ladies in red at the 2011 Emmy Awards from the bottom of our hearts for not only making our lives a little bit easier, but also a lot more beautiful.

While there's always that initial fear of whether one should wear red on the red carpet, Nina Dobrev threw caution to the wind, and it WORKED. The Vampire Diaries actress absolutely stunned in this drop-dead strapless scarlet Donna Karan with a voluminous fishtail that is SO bodycon it looks straight-up sewn onto her impossibly hourglass physique. Adrianne Palicki also wore a fire-engine-colored frock, but hers was a satin sweetheart neckline with a halter and seductive thigh-high slit by Dolce & Gabbana. Lea Michele's floor-length Marchesa with its ruched shoulder embellishments and sweeping open back was a vision of Hollywood glamour. SEVERAL other vixens dared to wear red on the red carpet, including Kate Winslet, Sarah Hyland, and Sofia Vergara. See the rest of the ladies in red after the jump!

Cocktail dresses for Spring 2012 at Marc by Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen, and Sherri Hill during New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single girl in possession of a cocktail dress, must be in want of another one (or ten). Well, we're pretty sure that's how Jane Austen would have opened Pride and Prejudice if she'd been around today. Good ol' Jane would have known that a girl can never, ever have enough cocktail dresses in her fashion arsenal, which is why every season of New York Fashion Week ushers in an array of stunning little frocks ripe for the picking. For Spring 2012, Marc by Marc Jacobs stepped up to the plate with his quirky twist on the LBD: a sweetheart neckline, a splash of coral, and bright yellow heels.

Ball gowns for Spring 2012 at Jason Wu, Marchesa, and Christian Siriano during New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

Forget Cinderella. She may have had her happily ever after, but we're pretty sure that chick was confined to the same ball gown (blue satin and puffy white sleeves ring a bell?) for all eternity. After New York Fashion Week, we'd much rather take our pick from the Spring 2012 collections. Oozing youthful elegance, the stream of contemporary ball gowns that paraded down the runways are practically begging us for a night on the town. Take Jason Wu's strapless chartreuse number, which effortlessly combines elements of sweet (that little bow belt!) and sassy (a shorter-in-the-front hemline that allows you to show off whatever fabulous shoes you're wearing at the moment).

Shards for Spring 2012 at The Blonds, Betsey Johnson, and Sherri Hill during New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

Move over metallics and sequins, there are new guys in town, and these rebellious fellas are hellz bent on stealing your fashion spotlight. That's right, say hello to SHARDS! (Cue warrior-like music mixed with eery glitches and pops.) New York Fashion Week had its fair share of shiny surfaces and sequin spectaculars for Spring 2012, but for something altogether different (and, literally, EDGIER), we're going to endorse style shards for the win. Not only do they catch eyes from a distance, they can be downright dangerous-looking when viewed up close, and thus, up your own danger-girl prowess potential.

Sequins for Spring 2012 at Jenny Packham, Anna Sui, and Jeremy Scott during New York Fashion Week.

We're going to let you in on a secret: Spring 2012 is all about SPARKLE MOTION. That's right, when you emerge from your wintery cocoon-cave ready to breathe in the petunia fumes of a bright 'n' breezy day, imagine yourself bedazzled, nay BESPARKLED, in the sweetest of sequined embellishments. The spring collections shown at New York Fashion Week offered all kinds of shiny action for both day and night, making the prospect of wearing sequins all the more enticing. Besides, who doesn't want a little razzle-dazzle in their wardrobe?

Nails from the Nicole Miller and Jen Kao Spring 2012 shows.
Photo: WireImage/Getty Images

When models hit the runway at New York Fashion Week, we "oohed" and "ahhed" at their to-die-for ensembles, swoon-worthy hair, and impeccable shoes. But little did WE know, the best part of the Spring 2012 looks was on their fingertips! Designers all across the board stepped up their nail game SO HARD that we couldn't wait to get our hands (heh) on the runway images after the show to get a closer view. Some of our favorite looks included Nicole Miller's hot pink and purple checkered nails that reflect perfectly on the collection's bright neon ensembles. We can think of endless color combos to try right when the weather gets warm! At Jen Kao, the nails were straight-up FIERCE. The black to red gradient on the almond-shaped tips scream, "Don't mess with me OR my nails!" We need these.

Zany prints for Spring 2012 at Jeremy Scott, Rodarte, and Abbey Dawn by Avril Lavigne during New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

Why DOES it always have to be flowers and circles and lines and five-point stars strewn across our bodies? There are plenty of other graphics, other shapes, other species of flora that deserve a piece of garment real estate, so why not just fork it over?? A few brave designers dared to continue blazing the trail for unique and refreshingly unexpected patterns, like the produce-aisle-inspired pieces we saw Miuccia Prada and Stella McCartney forge ahead with for Spring 2011. This season, Jeremy Scott, Rodarte, and Abbey Dawn saddled up to guide us through the next big trend frontier: ZANY PRINTS!

Sportswear for Spring 2012 at Alexander Wang, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Ruffian during New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

Even if you're not really athletic, the sportswear trend that emerged from the Spring 2012 New York Fashion Week runways has you covered. And no, we're not talking the battered sneakers or faded college sorority T-shirts you still wear to the gym. We're talking luxe sportswear, light-as-air fabrics, sleek silhouettes, and lively bursts of color. We're talking Alexander Wang, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Ruffian, who all displayed chic, sporty ensembles that you'd never actually wear to play sports, but would wear to convey your active, on-the-go lifestyle.

Mixed prints for Spring 2012 at Charlotte Ronson, Anna Sui, and Karen Walker during New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

The mixing of prints, whether it's florals with stripes or variations of tribal patterns worn together, is a trend that designers have been dabbling in for the past two-ish seasons, but not until this New York Fashion Week's Spring 2012 shows has it really exploded into such a colossally unavoidable force. If you haven't already dipped your toes in the idea, now is definitely the time to start experimenting. The aforementioned florals + stripes combo is a tried-and-true one and a great starting point for working up to more advanced iterations like those seen this week from Charlotte Ronson, Anna Sui, and Karen Walker.

Flares for Spring 2012 at Betsey Johnson, Alice + Olivia, and Anna Sui during New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

We'll always have a soft spot for the skinny pant leg, but if there's anything we picked up from New York Fashion Week's Spring 2012 shows, it's that billowy flares are back. It's as if the fashion gods have decided to give us all some breathing room from skintight silhouettes. To be sure, retro flared pants have enjoyed a surge of popularity recently, but never in such fun, playful prints as seen on the runways of Betsey Johnson, Alice + Olivia, and Anna Sui.
