Let's aaaall let out a giant, swoony, SIGH in honor of tonight's 2012 Oscars. It's the most GLAMOROUS evening in Hollywood, and the 84th Annual Academy Awards officially rounds out this year's back-to-back-to-back winter awards shows season. Today's brightest burning cinema stars from Shailene Woodley to Rooney Mara, Jennifer Lopez to Milla Jovovich, to Gwyneth Paltrow ALL took to the red carpet in dazzling, white-hot ensembles.

Tonight may be the Oscars, but yesterday, Hollywood started the film celebrations early with the 2012 Film Independent Spirit Awards. A daytime affair, the event called for a bit more of a light-hearted sartorial approach. Hemlines were shorter, and attendees embraced their Spring Fever with flowery details. Elizabeth Olsen, Busy Philipps, Shailene Woodley, and Zoe Saldana all wore touches of floral in their step and repeat ensembles.

Snooki (as Lola) hits the club.
Photo: MTV

It's pretty much expected for the Jersey Shore cast members to be at the forefront of club fashion. I mean, they're professional boardwalk party hoppers at this point (with a little Shore Store during daylight hours), so they're able to spot fresh emerging trends before most anyone else. THIS little *pointer finger circle motion* ensemble, though, might be a little avant-garde for us. At least for right now. Yes, ladies and gents, that is the one and only Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi clad in a full-on fuzzy bunny suit at Karma.

Rihanna gets retro with a turtleneck and chain.
Photo: Getty Images

Leave it to Rihanna to hit the ground running with a fresh trend. The fall 2012 showings at New York Fashion Week predicted a new era of rising necklines, and it looks like Ri, ever the early-adopter, is getting a jump-start on the trend. In a sharp turn from her usual more, erm, revealing vestments, the "We Found Love" singer was spotted out and about and uncharacteristically covered up.

Harnesses, gorilla arms, and covered faces were big trends at Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week.
Photo:

New York Fashion Week has wrapped, so now it's a time for reflection. A time to take stock and truly think about what trends to incorporate into your new fall wardrobe. It's also a time to look at videos made whilst one is tired and strangely retaining water in one's puffy moonface against the backdrop of spliced-in photos of models looking waifish and extra cheek-boney. SERIOUSLY, do I look like this? Also, don't answer that.

So, on to the point! Here, we have created a video for you that includes the four most notable trends of the season as gauged by prevalence on the runway: loooooong, lean lengths; leather; fur; and artful collars. From Rodarte's shearling dress to Herve Leger by Max Azria's leather harnesses, to the ubiquity of a thing called "gorilla arms," here is my enormous head looming before you in hopefully a nonthreatening (at the very least) manner to spasm chat about a New York Fashion Week fall trend cheat sheet. Namaste. Or whatever.

Now that the New York Fashion Week shows are over, we can sit back and survey the week as a larger unit for next season's hottest trends! It appears mixed prints isn't a look that's cooling off any time soon. In fact, judging from this Fall 2012 showing, the wielding of layered patterns is only getting more extreme. Chances are good you've already started dabbling in the idea, but if not, we'll help you figure out a few ways to make the look work.

MOTLEY COLORS

Remember how daunting colorblocking seemed, like, a year ago? And now you probably concoct bold outfits with the trend in your SLEEP. Once you get over the initial crazy feeling, it's easy to visiualize and craft a deliciously on-trend ensemble. Just like with colorblocking, it's important that all the hues you use fit within the same mood. Rebecca Minkoff mixed a marbled pumpkin knit with goldenrod snakeprint shorts which, in sentence form, sounds insane, but because they're both earthier, Thanksgiving-esque tones, the look is harmonious. Honor paired a thinly striped black and neon lime sweater with a pencil skirt diagonally tiered in exactly the same shades - a fool-proof recipe for flawless print mixing. The always imaginative Anna Sui also went for bold colors, mixing some varied shades of sapphire which may sound like a clashy mess at first, but with the right accessories and head-to-toe commitment, the final product is really fun and striking. Also, a simple hairdo is necessary.

You expect to be awed by the red carpet fashion at awards shows—the sparkly dresses, the lavish jewelry, the gorgeous heels—but in a delightfully unexpected change of pace, the SAG Awards also featured a GRIP of approachable hairstyles on the step-and-repeat. Dianna Agron, Kaley Cuoco, Busy Philipps, and Renee Bargh all sported braided crowns of varied techniques tonight.

SAG Awards Lace

It seems everyone's gone girly for the 2012 SAG Awards. Ariel Winter, Michelle Williams, Emma Stone, and Amber Riley all gussied up their red carpet dresses with a little (or a lot) of lace. Ariel opted for a rhinestone and bejeweled gray, sweetheart neckline Collette Dinnigan dress. The fitted bodice was paired with a full, layered, tea-length lace skirt and she wore her hair down in shiny loose waves to complement the textural appeal. She finished her look with some glittery (and age appropriate) Miu Miu pumps, which, um, haiii, we want now. Plus, how cute would it be to cop this look from prom? Think about it. Michelle Williams stunned in a fiery red, curve-hugging Valentino gown and matching shoes. The bias-cut, single strapped dress features only a touch of lace around her shoulders for an elegant-yet-sultry cap-sleeve effect. Note that she is wearing almost NO accessories and minimal makeup. A power move for letting her crimson dress do all the talking.

The Sundance Film Festival kicked off this weekend, and as usual, the style spotting involved a parade of boots and cozy chic. If there's one event where celebs can throw some fun into their wardrobe while exuding total comfort and 'dorbsness, it's Sundance. And what better way to accentuate your jeans (which are the norm in mountainous Utah) than with a stylish sweater? Usually there's no shortage of Ugg(h)s, skinnies, and Park City parkas, but this year the ladies mixed it up with some seriously kewl sweater sass that we're all set to steal. Elizabeth Olsen paired black booties and brown legging cords with a vintage Versace-esque tiger sweater. Victoria Justice layered a muli-striped cropped sweater over a black tee and skinny jeans, and accentuated the red in her sweater with matching knee-high socks (kudos on style and cold-weather function). We were thrilled to see Liv Tyler looking lovely in cascading brunette rivulets and a killer Balenciaga sweater that we'd be wearing right now if we'd won the lottery. Oh, and they weren't the only ones all knitted out...

Critic's Choice Awards Fashion

Last night's Critics' Choice Movie Awards was BURSTING with one beautiful ensemble after another (here's the best dressed list if you don't believe us), but we couldn't help but notice a colorful trend buzzing on the red, er, gray carpet. It seems our favorite celebs couldn't stop turning up in either black or yellow themed outfits. (Cue: Wiz Khalifa's "Black and Yellow" video STAT.) On the darker side of the spectrum, Kirsten Dunst, Evan Rachel Wood, and Chloë Moretz went for all-black ensembles. Kirsten sported a stunning Christian Dior layered tulle frock with matching black peep-toes and a pop of pink on her pout. Evan Rachel Wood looked SO romantic in a strapless lace Valentino gown with upswept hair and minimal accessories (well, minus that GIANT engagement ring. Get itttt!). Chloë went cute couture (as we like to call it) in a furry-sleeved, tea length Chanel dress with a beaded collar and pinned-back hair.
