The Sundance Film Festival kicked off this weekend, and as usual, the style spotting involved a parade of boots and cozy chic. If there's one event where celebs can throw some fun into their wardrobe while exuding total comfort and 'dorbsness, it's Sundance. And what better way to accentuate your jeans (which are the norm in mountainous Utah) than with a stylish sweater? Usually there's no shortage of Ugg(h)s, skinnies, and Park City parkas, but this year the ladies mixed it up with some seriously kewl sweater sass that we're all set to steal. Elizabeth Olsen paired black booties and brown legging cords with a vintage Versace-esque tiger sweater. Victoria Justice layered a muli-striped cropped sweater over a black tee and skinny jeans, and accentuated the red in her sweater with matching knee-high socks (kudos on style and cold-weather function). We were thrilled to see Liv Tyler looking lovely in cascading brunette rivulets and a killer Balenciaga sweater that we'd be wearing right now if we'd won the lottery. Oh, and they weren't the only ones all knitted out...

Critic's Choice Awards Fashion

Last night's Critics' Choice Movie Awards was BURSTING with one beautiful ensemble after another (here's the best dressed list if you don't believe us), but we couldn't help but notice a colorful trend buzzing on the red, er, gray carpet. It seems our favorite celebs couldn't stop turning up in either black or yellow themed outfits. (Cue: Wiz Khalifa's "Black and Yellow" video STAT.) On the darker side of the spectrum, Kirsten Dunst, Evan Rachel Wood, and Chloë Moretz went for all-black ensembles. Kirsten sported a stunning Christian Dior layered tulle frock with matching black peep-toes and a pop of pink on her pout. Evan Rachel Wood looked SO romantic in a strapless lace Valentino gown with upswept hair and minimal accessories (well, minus that GIANT engagement ring. Get itttt!). Chloë went cute couture (as we like to call it) in a furry-sleeved, tea length Chanel dress with a beaded collar and pinned-back hair.

Sad Animal Sweaters

Super sad animal sweaters.

Listen, we're sad that Christmas vacation is over and that New Year's is just a faint, faint memory now, but man, retailers are making us feel REALLY depressed lately. As we've been perusing all these post-holiday sales, we've been searching for sweaters (because it's, like, 10 degrees out), and we've stumbled across the strangest phenomenon—there are buttloads and buttloads of animals plastered on pullovers that look alarmingly distraught. It's like, Y SO SAD, you know? I mean, earlier this week marked THE most depressing day of the entire year, but did they have to go and get all PETA guilt-trippy on us? We have no idea what's making clothing designers want to screen print depressed puppies, melancholy bears, and lonely kittens on tees and sweaters, but it NEEDS to be discussed. First up—our favorite sadface animal sweaters. On the left, you'll see a black and white pullover with an unhappy rottweiler on the front. And to tear even more at your heart strings, a tattered, unfinished bottom hem finishes the look to really make you feel like life's not worth living (and it costs $141). At Topshop, you can scoop up a bunny knit sweater that screams, "I'm unhoppy," and Urban Outfitters even carries a down-in-the dumps off-the-shoulder puppy sweatshirt. Are you crying yet?

Here at MTV, the Style team is definitely looked to for fashion and beauty advice by sheer virtue of our occupation. I mean, who better to field your style queries than the girls who are knee-deep in it, right? Whether it's where to score the best vintage finds or what liquid liner applicator is best for a novice, we're always open to sorting out our friends' and coworkers' fash problems, BUT that doesn't mean we're 100 percent diligent about taking our own advice. Hold the gasps, guys; we're humans, too, and thus, we have faults. But what better time than the top of a new year to turn over a new leaf? As a crew, we've compiled our most pressing style resolutions for 2012.

If you're the kind of person who prefers to roll out of bed and start your day or you've scheduled your morning routine down to the millisecond, it's hard to find time to experiment with your hair at all, let alone develop the dexterity needed to braid it yourself. BUT whether we like it or not, 2012 is shaping up to be the year of the braid, and we will not let ourselves get left behind. Those of us who haven't switched up our tonsorial routine since before Justin Timberlake had a solo career (i.e., everyone but Andi, who gets to say things like "It's really easy!" when actually referring to creating some inhumanly complicated zigzag-track French braided updo with its own legislature) are determined to carve out all the hours and YouTube tutorials it may take to perfect the self-fishtail.

Stylehawks 'round the world look forward to New York's Met Gala every year as a landmark fashion event. Now, with the advent of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Art + Film Gala, museum director Michael Govan hopes the City of Angels will have its own soiree to rival the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute ball. Judging from the star-studded and notably well-heeled attendees at last night's LACMA Gala, Govan's dreams may be coming true, as fashionable celebs like Evan Rachel Wood, Camilla Belle, and Zoe Saldana turned it out for the affair.

Olivia Wilde on Aug. 8, Lady Gaga on Oct. 2, and Kat DeLuna on Sept. 25.
Photo: WireImage/Pacific Coast News

Earlier this summer, we saw Olivia Wilde sporting this chic yet messy cascading ponytail at a Cowboys and Aliens premiere, and we loved it SO MUCH we found out how to cop her exact look! But now it seems our top-tier pony is turning up everywhere—and we're not mad! Earlier this week Lady Gaga was showing some fan appreciation in a sky high undulating side pony with a touch of wispy sideswept bangs. Only a week earlier, Kat DeLuna was spotted in a super slicked back long pony while stopping through NYC. We love these no-nonsense ponytails because they can literally tame any kind of horrible hair day, and it looks super chic! But each high-haired beauty put her own twist on each pony...let's take a closer look!

Jordin Sparks, Emily Browning, and Snooki wear purple tips.
Photo: Getty Images

Katy Perry and Dianna Agron have made waves with their Return of Saturn-era Gwen Stefani-esque punky pink hair, sending droves of girls scrambling for that trusty old Manic Panic bottle. But lately we've spotted another wave of colored tresses, which skews (perhaps in light of the transitioning seasons) toward a deeper, richer hue: purple. Adventurous stylistas like Jordin Sparks, Emily Browning, and Snooki are trying out purple hair in every shade, and instead of dousing their entire 'do in the color, the trend is to keep it streaky or relegated to the tips.

Last Friday night, a slew of our favorite starlets came together for a magical night of fashion, music, and general fabulousness thanks to the folks at Teen Vogue. All the pretty young girls flocked to the mag's ninth annual Young Hollywood party in Los Angeles, and of course, the well-heeled pack blazed a trail lined with totally accessible and replicable summer-to-fall transitional trends.

The Teen Vogue party's PYTs turned out statement-making cocktail dresses for Friday night's affair. Shenae Grimes wore an edgy leather sleeveless dress with a crew neck and A-line skirt while costar Jessica Lowndes donned a frilly tiered polka-dot frock with a mega-sculpting boned bustier. Aimee Teegarden opted for a classic LBD by Kova&T paired with understated Jerome C. Rosseau heels, a Coach clutch, and a simple slick ponytail to let her ornate Dannijo necklace do all the talking. JoJo went for color with this bold magenta and red colorblocked mini and balanced out the look with nude peep-toes.

Nina Dobrev, Adrianne Palicki, and Lea Michele at the 63rd Emmy Awards.
Photo: Getty Images

Forgive us if words run together for a bit. We're just in such a state of paralyzing shock right now. It's just so rare that (A) a slew of starlets decide to swaddle themselves in the same color at the same event and (B) that a mere 10 minutes into an award ceremony's preshow red carpet coverage, we've already LOCKED down a trend. *wipes away a single happy tear* A resounding thank you to the ladies in red at the 2011 Emmy Awards from the bottom of our hearts for not only making our lives a little bit easier, but also a lot more beautiful.

While there's always that initial fear of whether one should wear red on the red carpet, Nina Dobrev threw caution to the wind, and it WORKED. The Vampire Diaries actress absolutely stunned in this drop-dead strapless scarlet Donna Karan with a voluminous fishtail that is SO bodycon it looks straight-up sewn onto her impossibly hourglass physique. Adrianne Palicki also wore a fire-engine-colored frock, but hers was a satin sweetheart neckline with a halter and seductive thigh-high slit by Dolce & Gabbana. Lea Michele's floor-length Marchesa with its ruched shoulder embellishments and sweeping open back was a vision of Hollywood glamour. SEVERAL other vixens dared to wear red on the red carpet, including Kate Winslet, Sarah Hyland, and Sofia Vergara. See the rest of the ladies in red after the jump!

Cocktail dresses for Spring 2012 at Marc by Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen, and Sherri Hill during New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single girl in possession of a cocktail dress, must be in want of another one (or ten). Well, we're pretty sure that's how Jane Austen would have opened Pride and Prejudice if she'd been around today. Good ol' Jane would have known that a girl can never, ever have enough cocktail dresses in her fashion arsenal, which is why every season of New York Fashion Week ushers in an array of stunning little frocks ripe for the picking. For Spring 2012, Marc by Marc Jacobs stepped up to the plate with his quirky twist on the LBD: a sweetheart neckline, a splash of coral, and bright yellow heels.
