Celebrities are getting to the point with their manicures. Fergie wore triangle-shaped nude nails at the New York Jets vs. Miami Dolphins football game on Sept. 26. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga's mani looked sharp with a coat of shiny black polish on them in London on Nov. 3. We also spotted Rihanna with talon-esque lavender nails at a book signing on Oct. 27. According to Roxanne Valinoti, celebrity manicurist and education training manager for CND, this style has been a growing trend for a few years now. Who knew?! "It's a very feminine shape that balances an edgy look," Valinoti adds. Want to go long with your nails? Here's how...

GET THE LOOK ...

STEP 1: Start with a square, medium-to-long nail and find the center point of the nail (you can draw a dot with a marker for reference).

STEP 2: File both sides of the nail with a soft file like Rudolph Nail File ($0.89, sallybeauty.com) toward the center as if you were creating a triangle with the extension edge.

STEP 3: Finally, smooth the edges and soften any harsh corners so both sides are even before painting.

All you had to do to figure out what's hot in fall fashion was watch the 2010 American Music Awards, which aired last night. From feminine fabrics to new strand styles, the award show's red carpet was bustling with celebs decked out in the season's freshest fall trends. Here are our faves...

LACY NUMBERS

While they chose very different lengths, Kelly Osbourne, Christina Milian and Heidi Klum each went with lace looks for the red carpet. Kelly's little black dress was a nice contrast to her big, blonde bouffant 'do. Meanwhile, the lacy overlay made Christina's minidress even sexier, and Heidi's long lace gown with red piping at the waist was perfectly see-through and elegant.

HAIR MAKEOVERS

Celebrities know — if you want to make a quick and simple style statement, just switch up your hair. Taylor Swift traded in her usual wavy, flirty style for a sleeker, longer look with bangs. Ke$ha loaded her locks with hair spray for a gravity-defying mohawk, and Rihanna (whose red hot hair was to the middle of her back just a couple of days ago) went with a cute shoulder-length, Shirley Temple-style.

TRAILING TRAINS

These stars prove that you don't have to be getting hitched to wear a train. Miley Cyrus wore a white and pink shimmery wrap dress with a long thin train that you either loved or hated. Jada Pinkett Smith looked statuesque in gold, tiered dress with a train flowing behind her. Meanwhile, Rihanna seemed to blend right into the red carpet in her hair-matching, trained dress.

As temperatures drop, we're seeing a rise in the number of celebs wrapping themselves in funky, chunky knit sweater dresses. And, it makes sense — the look is both rugged and refined at the same time, plus a sweater dress is one of the most versatile pieces you'll ever own. Here are the looks we're getting cozy with this winter. Which is your favorite?

DRESSED UP AND SPARKLY: Model Chanel Iman belted an oversize, short-sleeve sweater dress for the opening of the Chanel SoHo Boutique on Sept. 9 in New York City. For an extra pop of color, she slung a bright red bag over her shoulder. To get the look, try this Grace Elements Sweater Dress ($159, macys.com).

ROCK AND ROLL: Anna Paquin gave us edge at Spike TV's Scream 2010 event on Oct. 16 in a flouncy knit dress, which she paired with black pumps and two cuff bracelets. Look tough and stuff in Apart Studded Sweater Dress ($128, apartstyle.com).

SOFT AND STRUCTURED: At a book signing on Oct. 6, Nicole Richie wore a military green turtleneck sweater dress with black tights and high-heel booties. We love the Dolman-esque pointy shoulder pads! Slip on this Merona Collection Merino Wool Turtleneck Sweater Dress ($47.99, target.com) for a similar look.

LIGHT AND LAYERED: It looks like Natalie Portman got creative with a thin, gray knit dress, by pulling it over a flouncy white minidress. Keep things simple in this Marc by Marc Jacobs Pattie Sweater Dress ($248, saksfifthavenue.com).

CASUAL AND CHIC: Katy Perry's gray knit sweater dress, accented with tan leather shoulder and arm details, is the perfect throw-it-on-and-go getup. This AKA New York Medallion Crew Sweater ($160, shoplesnouvelles.com) is similar, and perfect for weekend wear. Just pair it with some leggings and you're all set.

Olivia Palermo, Nicole Richie, and Blake Lively all showed off a hot fall trend recently — wide-leg trousers. Why do celebs love them? They can instantly lengthen your legs if you pair them with your highest of high heels. Read on for our favorite wide-leg trouser picks. Go on, try something new.

Natalie Portman at the Governors Awards in L.A. on Nov. 13, and Mandy Moore at the 'Tangled' premiere on Nov. 14.

Natalie Portman and Mandy Moore recently stepped out (and stood out) in a hot hue — bright fuchsia. Natalie wore a long Lanvin gown with matching strappy shoes and gold accessories to the Governors Awards on Nov. 13. The next day, Mandy Moore, who plays the voice of Rapunzel in the animated film Tangled, wore a '50s-style, one-shoulder satin cocktail dress by Carolyne Roehm, which she paired with Kara Ackerman studs and gold Jimmy Choo sandals. Between the two hot pink ladies, we're liking Mandy's short dress more than Natalie's long gown — the knee-skimming length on Mandy shows off a flirty, just-there-to-have-fun vibe. But what do you think?

Rihanna in Milan on Nov. 9, Kim Kardashian in Munich on Sept. 22, Angela Simmons in New York on Sept. 13.

If you're not careful, three-strand braids have a way of looking too preschool, too I-just-finished-working-out, or basically anything but edgy. But for a stylish, out-of-the-box plait, try a fishtail braid instead, like the ones worn by Rihanna on Nov. 9 while performing on Italian X Factor, Kim Kardashian on Sept. 22 during Oktoberfest in Munich, and Angela Simmons at a Tracy Reese fashion show on Sept. 13. Sure, it looks complicated, but celebrity stylist Larry Sims — who has worked on Victoria Beckham and Mel B — told us fishtail braids are just as easy as regular twists. Find out Sims' step-by-step instructions for fishtail braids below.

Lea Michele in Erdem on Nov. 8, Sept. 7, and May 17.
All photos: Getty Images/WireImage

Lea Michele has a new favorite designer! The Glee star wore British label Erdem's colorful, patterned pieces for three red carpet appearances. Most recently, she wore a long-sleeved, colorful Erdem dress to a TV Guide magazine party in Hollywood on Monday. Erdem is designed by 30-year-old Erdem Moralioglu, who is one of Britain's hottest young talents. Earlier this year, the London-based designer received the British Fashion Council/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, an award established to help rising designers build their businesses. With the support of Lea Michele and a host of other celebrities, including Sienna Miller, Keira Knightley, and Ashley Olsen, Erdem is well on his way. Audrina Patridge on Nov. 9, Stephanie Pratt on Feb. 25, and Kristin Cavallari on Sept. 12.

The forecast may call for sunny skies in California, but it's all gray for the ladies of the The Hills, as Audrina Patridge, Stephanie Pratt, and Kristin Cavallari were spotted recently wearing gray strapless cocktail dresses. While announcing the People's Choice Awards nominees yesterday, Audrina Patridge rocked a simple but sparkly gray-purple (gurple?) dress by Nicole Miller Signature that hugged her curves. Stephanie Pratt partnered her light gray BCBG pick with maroon shoes and a chunky necklace at a fundraiser on Feb. 25. And Kristin Cavallari looked like a fancy tablecloth in a full-bodied, printed gray dress by Romona Keveza with black peep-toes during New York Fashion Week on Sept. 12. Our favorite look has to be Audrina's, simply because of its simplicity. But what do you think?

Rihanna in September 2009, Madonna in November 2010, and Blake Lively in January 2010.

Stella McCartney's perforated thigh-high boots were one of the most popular boot styles when they launched for fall 2009, and just because they're from last season doesn't mean they're over. Just last week Madonna stepped out wearing these boots, which retailed for $1,595 before they sold out. She pairing them with a sparkly tunic by Roberto Cavalli. Other starlets also fell for these boots: Rihanna wore them with a gray jersey dress, and Gossip Girl's Blake Lively wore them with a white men's shirt and black boyfriend blazer. Overall, we think Madonna looks best in these boots because she didn't dress them down by pairing them with casual clothes. Rather, she embraced the wild look with something equally attention-getting up top. But what do you think?
