Purple reigns for Nicole Richie, Kirsten Dunst, and Blake Lively. And it makes complete sense—the perfect-for-p.m. color is deep enough to have a sophisticated feel, but more festive than a Little Black Dress. Nicole wore a one-shoulder Emilio Pucci shift to a party thrown in honor of her Lucky magazine cover on Jan. 10. The fashionista paired the velvet dress with nude peep-toe pumps from her own House of Harlow 1960 line. Meanwhile, Kirsten looked feminine and vintage-y in a royal purple Prada shift, which had pretty pleating at the waist. And at the 2011 National Board of Review of Motion Pictures Gala in New York on Jan. 11, Blake dazzled in a Marchesa dress, which had exaggerated ruffles on the shoulders. The Gossip Girl star paired the purple number with turquoise jewelry (CUTE!). While these three ladies may have kick-started the purple trend, we have a feeling it's here to stay. But what do you think?

From belted beauties to long-sleeve frocks and over-the-top dresses, here are five trends that smacked us in the face at Sunday night's Golden Globes Awards.

LONG SLEEVE GOWNS: It was sunny in California, but that didn’t stop these actresses from rocking arm-covering sheaths on the red carpet. Both Anne Hathaway’s Giorgio Armani dress and Angelina Jolie’s Atelier Versace were studded with Swarovski crystals, while Leighton Meester's Burberry Prorsum printed gown featured ruched shoulders for a Victorian flair.

ONE SHOULDER DRESSES: Christina Hendricks (in Romona Keveza), Mila Kunis (in Vera Wang), and Julia Stiles (in a black ruffled gown), all nailed the one-shoulder look, thanks (in part) to their toned biceps and triceps.

BELTED BEAUTIES: Looking glamorous was a cinch for Sofia Vergara (in Vera Wang), and Glee girls Jenna Ushkowitz (in Rebecca Taylor) and Amber Riley (in Oliver Tolentino), who all belted their floor-length frocks.

SEQUINED SHEATHS: Carrie Underwood, Scarlett Johansson, and Olivia Wilde wore their star power on their backs in the form of super-sparkly, easy-to-spot dresses. Scarlett wore a bat-wing Elie Saab dress, Olivia wore a Marchesa ball gown, and Carrie wore a strapless Badgley Mischka number.

OMG! ENSEMBLES: On one hand, we want to applaud Helena Bonham Carter, Tilda Swinton, Jennifer Lopez, and January Jones for taking fashion risks. But on the other hand, we just don't get it. Helena wore two different color shoes with her Vivienne Westwood dress, Tilda's crisp white shirt and yellow skirt stiffen her demeanor, J. Lo should lose the sheer cloak (her Zuhair Murad dress would've looked just fine without it), and January's red hot Versace dress may have been a bit TOO hot.

Honeysuckle may be the cool new hue for 2011, but pink, green, beige, blue, red, and black stole the color show (if only momentarily) at Sunday’s Golden Globes Awards. Which shade was your fave?

PRETTY IN PINK: Claire Danes, who scooped up a Golden Globe, wore a bright pink Calvin Klein halter dress, while Natalie Portman (in Viktor & Rolf), Emma Stone (in Calvin Klein), and Lea Michele (in Oscar de la Renta), chose softer shades of pink.

EMERALD CITY: It was a green scene on the red carpet with Elisabeth Moss (appropriate last name!) in a Donna Karan forest-hued strapless dress, and Catherine Zeta-Jones in Monique Lhuillier. Angelina Jolie rocked a sparkly Versace dress, while Mila Kunis picked the perfect shade of green (in a Vera Wang dress) for her skin tone.

BEIGE BEAUTIES: The beiges worn by Scarlett Johansson, Michelle Williams, Sarah Hyland, and Dianna Agron were FAR from boring. Scarlett wore a sheer/lacy Elie Saab number, while Michelle wore a daisy-covered Valentino dress. Sarah Hyland and Dianna Agron went for strapless silhouettes in Max Azria Atelier and J. Mendel, respectively.

SEA OF BLUE: Jenna Ushkowitz (in Rebecca Taylor), Mandy Moore (in a colbat single-shoulder dress), and Amy Adams (in Marchesa) stayed true in gorgeous shades of blue.

LADIES IN RED: Sofia Vergara (in Vera Wang), Christina Hendricks (in Romona Keveza), and January Jones (in Versace) sizzled—not only were their gowns red hot but they were body-con, too.

BEAUTIFUL IN BLACK: Jennifer Lawrence (in Louis Vuitton), Jayma Mays (in Alberta Ferretti), Piper Perabo (in Oscar de la Renta), and Julia Stiles (in a single-shoulder ruffled dress) stuck with the classics—it's hard to go wrong with a bold, elegant dark gown.

As we all know, sometimes it’s the little things—hair, makeup, shoes, and bags—that make or break an outfit. From Jayma Mays’ super-saturated orange lipstick to Olivia Wilde’s spiked and studded gold pumps, these were the minor details that made these celebs 2011 Golden Globes ensembles MAJOR.

LOUD LIPS: A handful of stars brightened their pearly whites with poppy pout polish. Natalie Portman and Julia Stiles both picked petal pink, while Piper Perabo swiped on a fresh red, and Jayma Mays chose an orange-y hue.

'50s RETRO HAIR: In an ode to Old Hollywood Glamour, actresses Mila Jovovich, Megan Fox, and January Jones smoothed their strands into bouncy, jazz club curls.

PRETTY PONYTAILS: Proving that ponytails can be just as dressy as chignons, Glee's Jessalyn Gilsig, True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld, and The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco all whipped their long strands up.

BIG BANGS: Actresses Sandra Bullock and Olivia Wilde teamed their bone straight stands with brow-skimming bangs for a sleek and sophisticated look.

COOL CLUTCHES: The uniqueness of Leighton Meester’s gold Louis Vuitton bag, Hailee Steinfeld’s blue Amanda Pearl cylinder clutch, and Jayma Mays vintage-y Judith Leiber fan-shaped handbag was just as important as the essentials they stashed inside them.

STATEMENT-MAKING STILETTOS: Project Runway's Heidi Klum and Tron: Legacy's Olivia Wilde stepped out in stunner shoes—Heidi wore Marc Jacobs sandals with a red heel, while Olivia's Christian Louboutin gold slip-ons were utterly epic.

Our favorite part about awards shows is that we get to see dozens of hot trends on dozens of celebrities at one time. Such was the case at the 2011 Critics' Choice Movie Awards, where sheer fabric frocks carried over their dominance from 2010 and "mullet dresses" had their official coming-out party. Check out the other statement-making looks we loved.

SHEER DELIGHT: Short and sheer was the name of the game as actress Eva Mendes rocked an allover see-through Valentino number. Meanwhile, Elle Fanning's Valentino dress and Keri Hilson's black frock featured just hints of mesh.

MULLET DRESSES: It was business in the front, and party in the back for Mila Kunis in Nina Ricci, Michelle Williams in Balenciaga, and Khloe Kardashian in an animal print gown.

PEACHY KEEN: Flesh tone dresses full of embellishments, including glitter and ruffles, had a strong showing. We loved Jennifer Lawrence's L'Wren Scott pencil dress, Hailee Steinfeld's Marchesa cocktail dress and Elle Fanning's flippy Valentino dress.

STRAPLESS SWEETHEARTS: With or without jewelry, Amber Rose, Sofia Vergara, and Mandy Moore slipped into sexy collarbone-revealing gowns for the red carpet. Amber's mermaid dress and Sofia's metallic Temperley London showed off their figures, too, while Mandy's Monique Lhuillier just skimmed over her curves.

Amy Smart at the 'Dead Awake' premiere in Hollywood Nov. 30, Hailee Steinfeld at the 'True Grit' premiere in Beverly Hills on Dec. 9, and Chloe Moretz at the 'Let Me In' premiere in London on Oct. 14.

Three actresses, one dress. Amy Smart, Hailee Steinfeld, and Chloe Moretz all slipped into the same LBD (lacy black dress) from designer Stella McCartney's Resort 2011 collection for recent red carpet events. Amy wore the shift, which has a lace top and flowy skirt, for the November premiere of Dead Awake in Hollywood with gray pumps and a gorgeous trio of bracelets. Meanwhile, Hailee rocked the garment with black booties at the premiere of True Grit in Beverly Hills last month. And finally, Chloe paired her frock with black tights and matching heels for the London opening of Let Me In in October. While we thought all three ladies shined in the romantic shift, 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld won this style matchup for us. We love how she gave her look some edge with tough footwear and a sleek updo. But what did you think?

Khloe Kardashian, Nicky Hilton, and Blake Lively were all spotted rocking a new trend recently—the "coatigan." These pretty pieces, which are—as you may have guessed by the name—a combination of the softness of a cardigan and the thickness of a coat, are ideal for staying warm during colder months. And the gorgeous, colorful prints, which are inspired by the Navajo Indian tribe, offer a festive touch that's sure to drag you out of your winter blues.

If you want to nab a "coatigan," check out our picks below!

Coatigans from Topshop, Zara, and Storets.

AN OPEN BOOK
An open "coatigan," like the Topshop Red Navaho Coatigan ($160, Topshop.com), is a more casual and relaxed way to wear this style—toss this pretty piece over skinny jeans and riding boots.

BELTED BEAUTY
If you're hesitant about the oversized shape of these coatigans, opt for a belted look like the Zara Long Jacquard Cardigan ($59.99, Zara.com), which maintains your curves.

FASTENED AND FABULOUS
We love the buttons on this Juyoun Nordic Jacquard Sweater Coatigan ($76.99, Storets.com). The extra details give the coatigan a more polished and finished look.

Lauren Conrad at the Young Hollywood Studio in L.A. on Jan. 7, Nicole Richie in New York on Sept. 29, and Alexa Chung at the London Film Festival on Oct. 22.
Photo: Getty Images

Just because it's cold (er, FREEZING) in many parts of the country doesn't mean we can't all rock a cute pair of short-shorts every now and then. But, we can't just throw on some floral board shorts over bare legs and not expect a few "what-the-heck-are-you-wearing" stares. Stay warm and look cool with these tips...

GO DARK
Winter white works for dresses but not so much for shorts. Team a dark pair of short-shorts with black tights and dark shoes, like The Hills star/fashion designer Lauren Conrad did when she hit up the Young Hollywood Studio in Los Angeles on Jan. 7.

PICK THE PERFECT FABRIC
Nicole Richie, Lucky magazine's February 2011 cover girl, teamed a striped top and leopard print hat with velvet shorts, and you should too. It's not rocket science—the thicker/plusher the fabric, the warmer they'll keep your tush.

BE A KNIT WIT
There's no better topper to wear with winter shorts than a sweater. Need proof? For the London Film Festival in October, model Alexa Chung partnered her leather shorts with a slouchy gray cable knit sweater. Totes adorbs!

+ Which pair of cozy shorts would you wear this winter — Lauren's, Nicole's, or Alexa's?

Zoe Saldana, Sophia Bush, and Cassie Scerbo at Audi and Designer J. Mendel's Kick-Off Celebration of Golden Globe Week 2011 on Jan. 9, 2011, in Los Angeles.

In a CROWDED room of celebs at last night's Audi and J. Mendel Kick-Off Celebration of Golden Globe Week in Los Angeles, one thing stood out—ruffles. And, boy, did we spot a lot of them. Zoe Saldana wore a strapless leather dress by party host J. Mendel. The actress accessorized with a maroon clutch and matching Brian Atwood pumps. Meanwhile, One Tree Hill's Sophia Bush looked like amazing in a cream Oliver Tolentino ruffled collar dress, which she partnered with equally stunning Manolo Blahnik royal blue satin pumps. And actress Cassie Scerbo walked the red carpet in a strapless Alice + Olivia Katrina dress with rhinestone embellishments, dangling earrings and strappy black sandals. We can appreciate all ruffles big (like Cassie's) and small (like Zoe's), but what do you think?

At last night's People's Choice Awards, Emma Roberts, Taylor Swift, Lucy Hale and Aly Michalka showed us that just because you're rocking a fancy-schmancy dress with fancy-schmancy jewelry, doesn’t mean your strands have to be all stiff and shellacked. The girls all chose to pair their above-the-knee designer cocktail dresses and GORGEOUS jewelry with perfectly imperfect updos.

EMMA ROBERTS: Emma, who will star in Scream 4, emphasized her classic beauty with Carla Amorim 18K rose gold earrings and a simple french twist. She parted her hair, then smoothed it back behind her ears for a sleek (but not gelled down) look.

TAYLOR SWIFT: Taylor won the People's Choice Award for Favorite Country Artist, but her signature ladylike updo is a hair winner in our book. No matter how often she whips her hair up into this curly look, it never gets old.

LUCY HALE: Lucy, another Scream 4 star, finger combed her thick, super-shiny locks to one side before pinning it all into a no-fuss bun. The breezy 'do was the perfect balance to her bold makeup.

ALY MICHALKA: Hellcats star Aly Michalka, pinned her naturally wavy strands into an off-centered messy chignon. She let the fringe around her hairline free-fall for a casual look that helped tone down her sequins dress.
