mtv Style is moving! come with us to mtv news »

Unless you happen to be one of those lucky people who never gets hot and sweaty (seriously though, what's their sercret?!), looking cute at a festival like Coachella is a tough feat to pull off. We're talking about a situation where you're sitting outside all day under the beating sun, surrounded by thousands of pushing people all elbowing to see the same band you want to...not exactly a picture-perfect moment. But hey, it IS possible, and some of our MTV Style favorites are here to prove it. It seemed like everyone and their mother hit Indio for weekend 1 of the fest, and over the course of 72 hours, some key trends emerged. Whether it's stars like Solange sporting ladylike dresses, Karen O in crazy prints, K.Stew in her trademark snapback, or Vanessa Hudgens in a flower crown (yep, they're still around), these musicians and their famous fans manage to keep cool without sacrificing style. See how they did it below!

LADYLIKE DRESSING

Coachella

Alright, so we all know that Miss Solange Knowles is the reigning queen of festival dressing. Rather than stick with lazy girl options like ripped denim and cropped tops, she cranks up the quirk in retro originals like printed suits and button-ups. She rocked this look hard at SXSW, but this weekend the singer gave her signature style a ladylike spin in a lemon-print sleeveless frock and matching yellow sandals. Not that she would ever need to, but Katy Perry also proved her pinup status at the Lacoste party decked out in a Dolce & Gabbana skirt and bra set (also the same one Iggy Azalea wore in her "Work" music video). Then there's Jessie Ware, rounding out the trio in a red and white striped crop top and printed tea length skirt. Whereas Solange and Katy opted for heels, Jessie shed her shoes to go barefoot during her performance. She topped off her look with some raver pigtail buns, and somehow, we love her even more than before.

Whether you're going to weekend one or weekend two, there's no denying that Coachella is upon us. That's right, the yearly celebration of bandeau tops, headbands, and...wait, it's about the music? Oh right, we forgot, sorry. Sometimes it can feel like our favorite festivals get a little lost amid all the celeb sightings and street style snaps, but we are a style blog after all and honey, we know you want to look good no matter what. In the true spirit of Coachella, we decided to build a series of looks inspired by some of our favorite bands playing the fest. After all, it's not next-level nerdy (like wearing a band's t-shirt to their show *collar tug*) to dress thematically, right?!

KURT VILE AND THE VIOLATORS

Vibe right to Kurt Vile in easy chambray.

I'm just going to go out on a limb here and say that Wakin' On a Pretty Daze is one of the best albums of the year. If you're not familiar with Philly longhair Kurt Vile, familiarize yourself right quick because your life will never be the same. The album is filled with sweeping, chilled out guitar jams that make us feel as warm and fuzzy as a springtime crush, and we just know that seeing Vile play the songs live in the desert will be a moment worth swooning over. For enjoying some Vile in style, you'll want to make sure you have your vibes right. The Summer Feeling Dress ($88.00) from Nasty Gal is a way to wear denim while still feeling breezy, and paired with Marais' field boot ($92.50) you'll be ready for whatever adventurous path the night should take. Of course if we're talking about vibes you need to have your crystals on lock, and this raw rose quartz necklace ($38.00) from Etsy will protect you against anyone or anything that should try and send a bummer your way. Accessories should be kept to a minimum in the hot summer sun, so a simple pink seed bead bracelet ($9.99) from Madewell and a red accented threaded belt ($6.80) will provide a pop of color to keep you from blending in too much with the sky and the earth. Finally, some sunnies, like the SUPER Lucia Puma Sunglasses ($269.00) and a simple cross body bag--so your hands are free to hold tight to whoever makes you feel aforementioned spring crush feelings--like the the Essex Minibag ($98.00) is perfect for carrying anything you might need.

We don't know about you, but between bouts of spring fever, we're having a little bit of a crisis. We got so used to our boots and our all black ensembles this winter that now we don't know what to wear! While it's tempting to throw all of our chilly weather staples out the window and jump head first into floral dresses, bare legs, and denim shorts (mmm, summer), we have to admit that it's not THAT warm yet, and some serious in-between dressing is called for. These, friends, are the times that separate the women from the girls, as they say. Good transitional dressing is truly an art form, and it is not to be discounted. It's also not nearly as challenging as we all think once you have your anchor pieces locked down, and one of those is without a doubt a solid pair of flats. Ballet flats, loafers, sneaks, all will do, but right now what we're really falling for are playful oxfords. Whether floral, neon, holographic or just plain BRIGHT, the classic lace ups add that springtime je ne sais quoi to all of our outfits, and serve as a bit of a buffer when we're not sure what jacket to wear, whether it's warm enough for that microfloral dress, or...well, you get the idea. Lucky for us oxfords are trending in a major way, so there are tons of options to choose from!

FLORAL OXFORDS

It may not quite be time for those floral dresses, but oxfords are the next best thing.

Probably the simplest way to make your wardrobe pop without having to do a whole spring overhaul is with a pair of bright floral oxfords. Luckily, there are a ton of options out there, spanning an enormous variety of price points. Some of our faves are Forever 21's Floral Oxfords ($26.50), Dr. Martens Floral 3-eye oxford ($120.00), Splendid Nickerie Oxfords ($78.00), ASOS Mastermind Flatforms ($46.55), Aldo Foliroli in Natural Print ($40.00), and Kimchi Blue embroidered eyelet oxford ($49.00).

PRINTED DRESSES

Wear a printed dress this Easter!

In our brains, breezy printed dresses are THE quintessential springtime uniform. Wear them with sandals when padding around the city during the day, dress 'em up with heels or wedges at night...seriously, there are SO many options. Plus, a bonus: all three of these frocks have a modest knee-skimming silhouette, which means they're family-friendly for Easter, without sacrificing the cute factor. Win win?

Angel Haze, Macklemore, and Karen O. sport fringe jackets.
Photo: Getty Images

As Macklemore so aptly put it in "Thrift Shop," "John Wayne ain't got nothing on my fringe game." It was true then, and the words are still ringing true now, thanks to the singer's TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY on-point fringe game from SXSW. That Southwest blanket vest-type thing he sported at the Woodies might have a permanent place in our hearts, but the brown fringe number he worked at the Perez Hilton party comes in as a close second, because duh, it's amazing. Paired with a classy polka dot button-up and some layered gold necklaces, the look is a sort of Western gentleman ensemble we can totally get behind. We know, we know...fringe jackets aren't exciting groundbreaking— a quick breeze through your local vintage store or a rundown of Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey's recent music videos will tell you that. But what was old is clearly new again, and there's no better rep of that fact than Angel Haze, whose trimmed topper got a seriously modern edge at SXSW.

Usher, Kid Cudi, ScHoolboy Q

If 2013 SXSW is any indication, the bucket hat will be even bigger this spring and summer.
Photo: Getty Images/Supreme

It's difficult to pinpoint when and who exactly started the late '80s/'90s bucket hat trend. Was it LL Cool J circa "Going Back to Cali" or Nickelodeon's Salute Your Shorts? Thanks (or no thanks) to sparse documentation of that initial rise of the fisherman's chapeau, the world may never know. One thing is for sure, though: the hat with the 360 brim is experiencing a major present-day comeback, and nothing has made that more abundantly clear than the stages of this year's SXSW music festival. Bucket hats of all shapes and sizes made their way onto last week's Austin stages by way of Usher, Kid Cudi, ScHoolboy Q (of COURSE), Joey Bada$$, IamSu, ScHoolboy Q again, Smoke DZA, and Prince SAMO.

Demi Lovato

Even with a serious leg injury that has her posted up on crutches and rocking a (studded) orthopedic boot, Demi Lovato braved the stage to wail and floor fans with her impressive pipes. Demi performed for the grand opening of a new Topshop in the famous Los Angeles shopping center, The Grove, a small set including smash hit "Give Your Heart A Break." For her performance outfit, D paired the aforementioned boot with a spike-laden leather jacket, an over-sized heather gray t-shirt, black skinnies, and a few loose chains. Per usual, her beauty game was on point with a fresh, glowing face, strong (but not crazy) brows, and a classically badass matte red lip.

New t-shirts from COI-NYC.

So remember when we talked about how faux fashion t-shirts were having a moment? Well, that moment's quickly turning into more like an HOUR, considering the fact that practically four months later we're still talking about these twisted takes on designer goods. After invading the scene last year with its clever inversions of Givenchy ("Giraunchy") and Balenciaga ("Ballinciaga"), Manhattan underground label COI-NYC is back in action with even MORE haute couture inspiration that pays love to local neighborhoods. Miu Miu's morphed into "Niu Niu" York, Balmain's now "Brawlmain," and we can totally see fans like Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, and Rihanna rocking them in a split second.

Alexander Wang

Photo: Getty Images

Between pool toys and pet collars, Alexander Wang has made it clear that his designs shouldn't be restricted to clothes (although he's obviously owning THAT game, too). Just before Fashion Week, the New Yorker has revealed yet another unexpected project up his sleeve: a new partnership with Samsung. We got word this morning that Wang is teaming up with the mobile company NOT on a phone, but on a bag that's inspired by images captured by Samsung's Galaxy Note II model. He's selected stylists, influencers, and friends to take photos with the device, the result of which will be used as a motif splashed across the designer carryall. The purse won't be available to buy until this summer, but that's OK— there are way more than enough fashion-tech creations to tide us over until then. Earlier this week, Rebecca Minkoff announced a new collection of glittery clutches that do double duty as speakers, which let's be real, even NON-technophiles can appreciate.

Leather Snapback

Rihanna, Kat Graham, Ciara and Brandy sporting leather snapbacks.
Photo: Getty Images

Y'all already know how much we love snapbacks, but we can't stop spotting a new version of our ol' go-to accessory—the leather snapback. Not only is this cap an amazing homage to late '80s/early '90s fashion (um, haiii Janet Jackson in Rhythm Nation), but it's also totally warm (and practical!) option for those blustery winter days. Now if you're thinking, "Wha? Are you telling me a leather baseball cap is back in style?" The answer, friends, is yes. And we have proof! Rihanna, Kat Graham, Ciara and Brandy all sported leather caps within the past year and looked TOTALLY. KILLER. while doing so. Ri sizzled in a snapback with a snake on it (!!!) while performing in London last summer; Kat went grunge in a Nirvana tee and patent leather Alife cap last spring; Ciara stole the spotlight in a leather cap onstage in December; and Brandy oozed casual-cool style while spotted in the street in October.
