Rihanna, Selena Gomez

Camouflage is trending right now in a big way, and who better than two of our MTV Style patron saints, Rihanna and Selena Gomez, to show us how to do it well. Truth, we've seen it for months from the army jackets of our favorite bloggers to Katy Perry's stage ensembles, but when two pop stars wear it boldly and in different iterations in the same 24-hour span, you know you're riding the absolute crest of the camo wave. Devil's advocates though we are, it's time to see which version you prefer: Rihanna's hypebeast printed pants or Selena's extra layer overshirt?

Kat Dennings Jena Malone Julia Louis-Dreyfus 2012 Emmys

Despite the scorching temperatures on the 2012 Emmy Awards red carpet, the dresses certainly looked fall-ready in their jewel-toned hues. Kat Dennings, Jena Malone, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus all sported an autumn-appropriate brownish-red oxblood color in three totally gorge ways. Kat wore a gathered strapless J. Mendel dress with a plunging sweetheart neckline and gathered chiffon overlay. She accessorized with a statement gold Neil Lane cuff and matching cocktail ring with Louboutins underneath. Kat vamped up her beauty look with shiny black nails, burgundy lips, light brown shadow, and tousled waves. Perf!

When Rodarte teamed up with Opening Ceremony last year on the label's "Radarte" collection, the capsule line- which consisted of tees and hoodies emblazoned with the cheeky play on words- sold out pretty much immediately. It may have caused us to think twice about the irony (Rodarte's intricately crafted dresses usually retail for a couple thousand dollars, so why would you pay $200 on a hoodie that doesn't even spell the designer's name right?!), but let's be real: it's undeniably cool. In fact, this clever parody of the "status item" obsession was in a way, even cooler than the originals themselves. So it should go without saying that it's not REALLY that surprising that more brands are cashing in on this "faux" fashion with snarky inversions of labels like Versace, Givenchy, and Balenciaga. But the difference this time is that unlike the Rodarte x OC collab, they're coming from streetwear retailers unaffiliated with the designer and snatched up by celebs, fashion editors and skaters alike. The line between streetwear and runway suddenly got a lot more blurry.

t-shirts fashion week

T-shirts on the runway at Acne, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Ashish.

Say what?! Oh, that's just some of our favorite designers channeling their inner wordsmiths on the runway this season. Acne, Phillip Lim, and Ashish clearly had a LOT on their minds for Spring/Summer 2013, with models parading graphic tees down the catwalk...literally giving us a mouthful. We hear that the Acne collection was inspired by Emmylou Harris' cover of "Wrecking Ball," so it makes sense that the clothes repped their country heritage with modified gallon hats and serious denim. Designer Jonny Johansson also paid tribute to the musical backbone with t-shirts stamped with, yes, "MUSIC." There's no denying this message. 3.1 Phillip Lim hit the grunge scene hard in the label's NYC show, showing layers on layers on layers of sheers, sparkles, and prints. But what we loved most about the downtown edge of the collection HAD to be the designer's "I <3 Nueva York" tees (complete with an upside-down heart). The tourist shop staple has never looked so cool.

Can y'all believe it's over? Whew, New York Fashion Week flew by, and our heads are still spinning from all the glorious pieces we spotted on the spring/summer 2013 runway! So far we've noticed that designers couldn't get enough of warm-weather leather and head-to-toe heavy metal, and when it came to prints, there certainly wasn't a shortage of floral and '60s-inspired patterns to serve as some serious eye candy for next season. YUM. What we noticed, though, was that no matter where we spotted prints, they were always mirrored on either side! Long gone are the days of asymmetrical patterns and solid pieces—mirror prints have officially taken over the spring 2013 runway. Let's take a look!

Mirror Prints New York Fashion Week

If we know one thing for sure, it's that mirrored geometric prints reigned supreme. Vivienne Tam opted for a straight-forward geometric approach with layered inverted triangles to give her frock an updated Aztec feel, while Clover Canyon went ALL out with their detailed digitally-printed dress (WANT). Falguni & Shane Peacock took the mirrored motif very seriously by decking out their entire ensemble in symmetrical pieces—they even included a metal studded harness over the printed dresses, which totally took it to the next level.

It's official, y'all! This Spring 2013 New York Fashion Week hath decreed it: warm-weather leather is officially a thing. While it seems impractical given the material's luxurious thickness and the season's sticky humidity, when has that stopped us before? Like, when was the last time any podiatrist cosigned a pair of HEELS? And yet, year-round fashion staple right thurr. *dusts hands off* The recent surge in the use of this fabric versus those more breathable, like, say, cotton, raises a few questions, namely whether it has anything to do with the price of cotton and/or consumers being more willing to spend a premium on leather over other materials. But we can't deny that it also just looks reeeeeally badass. The dudes, I guess, have known that for a while (remember Kanye West's debut Paris Fashion Week show? That makes a LOT more sense now), but this past week has confirmed that the leather (or leather-look!) steez is a definite do in MULTIPLE iterations for the coming spring and summer.

Leather, New York Fashion Week

The easiest way to get away with the leather trend is probably in the form of a leather dress. Our girl Joan Smalls gave it the stamp of approval, wearing a quilted Balmain version for her House of Style co-host announcement, and now we've seen it on the Spring 2013 runways of Jason Wu, Mandy Coon, and Alexander Wang. In dress form, you get the epidermal freedom of an open shoulder, arms that can breath, and depending on the cut, maybe even a little ventilation from an A-line skirt. The Wang version is especially ideal because the cut-outs provide that much more air circulation.

We came, we saw, we conquered New York Fashion Week! While our Fashion (yes, with a capital F) high is still going strong, this means it's THE perfect time to round up some of our favorite trends fresh from the runways. We all know that the fashion world is a pendulum, meaning the popular looks one year will probably resurface a few seasons later. Although what's old may be new again, expect some totally modern twists for Spring 2013. Case in point: metallics. These guys probably already take up prime real estate in your closet, which is good news- because they're here to stay. Chalk it up the the Olympics or the classic American obsession with extravagance, but designers like Jeremy Scott, Rodarte, Rachel Zoe and more have added their own edge to traditional golden, silver, and bronze this season with sequins, chain links, and statement solid pieces. Yep, the Gilded Age is officially back!

OK, so Diane Von Furstenberg, Jill Stuart, and Falguni & Shane Peacock took a relatively classic approach to the trend with allover sequins and sparkles. But before you roll your eyes and yawn, hold up! This trio added their own signature touches, whether it's muted metallics like DVF, a disco ball gown from Jill Stuart, or a rad futuristic number from Falguni. They're bold, bright. and sparkle up a storm. In other words, these definintely aren't your grandmother's party dresses.

Frank Ocean, Lil Wayne, Mac Miller

The red carpet trend game doesn't have to be dominated by the ladies. Dudes follow fashion, too. And evidently, Frank Ocean, Lil Wayne, and Mac Miller have kept an eye on the mixed prints trend thing that's been happening for more than a few seasons now. All three of these guys employed some iteration of the piled on patterns but each in his own variation.

Word Beanies

Rita Ora, Kreayshawn and Porcelain Black all wear word beanies.

Word up! On the heels of Rihanna's "Boy" snapback hat comes the next big thing in headwear—beanies with phrases on them. And, listen, we're not talking about hats with brand names plastered on the front, we're talking about expressing whatever sentiment you feel on your forehead for ALL to see. Rita Ora, Kreayshawn and Porcelain Black have been behind this trend of late, and we're LOVING it. Just over the weekend, Rita sported a black and pink cap while performing at the Made in America festival that had the phrase "I'm a Village Bicycle" embroidered on the front. We're guessing this is a vintage find because our Google searches come up empty :(, but we like how it adds a touch of kookiness to her ensemble. She paired it with a fringe leopard top, bright red lips and stacked plastic bead bracelets. Funnnn!

Miranda Cosgrave in Juicy Couture's Eton Plaid Top.

Last week, we spotted iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove at the "Teachers Rock" Benefit in L.A. wearing, appropriately enough, an outfit that actually made us WISH we could go back to school. Yep, it was just that cute. With a rivet-encrusted collar and navy plaid motif, Miranda's Juicy Couture checkered top somehow managed to hopscotch the line between collegiate and trendy. With a tailored cut and tartan pattern, it's totally dresscode-friendly. But at the same time, the pointy collar, eye-grabbing embellishments, and back zipper make it the sleeveless blouse an after-class staple, too. Turns out we're not the only ones in love- Carly Rae Jepsen AND Iggy Azalea have also turned out in the top this week. And the cool part is, all three girls rock it in totally different ways.
