You know how sometimes you look at your closet—which is overflowing to the point where you have several shirts all living on the same hanger and it takes ALL of your core strength to move things around—and you wonder whether you should (a) weed through it to give some stuff away, (b) send a shipment to live at your mom’s house, or (c) just move? This is one of those times.

I’m happy to report that we’re going (mostly) with the latter because we found a sweet new spot with a Mariah-episode-of-Cribs sized walk-in closet. JUST FOR OUR SHOES.

From here on out, you can find all your MTV Style faves at our shiny new address, which is tricked out with granite countertops, an indoor/outdoor pool, and responsive web design. I Survived The Agenda Long Beach Trade Show http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/14/agenda-long-beach/ http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/14/agenda-long-beach/#comments Tue, 15 Jul 2014 02:16:54 +0000 http://style.mtv.com/?p=210957
Agenda Long Beach

All photos by Chrissy Mahlmeister

Trust me, I know hearing the words "trade show" and "Long Beach" in the same sentence probably makes you want to gag, but Agenda ain't your typical dad-filled convention center escapade. It's the place to be if you want to trade business cards with some of the coolest kids in the surf, skate and streetwear industry, and by some strange stroke of luck, half of a booth needed to be filled at the last minute. A friend of a friend mentioned my business (Rad Nails) to one of the organizers, and I was asked to join the invite-only list of brands two weeks before showtime. To put it lightly: I was stoked.

Agenda Long Beach

Since my target demo is certainly female-based, I was put into the "WMNS" section of the show. When I arrived on Thursday, I quickly realized this meant that 95% (this is a statistic I made up but it feels 100% right) of the convention center was filled with dudes, and I was in the one aisle dedicated to the ladies. Basically, this meant every time you went to the bathroom/got coffee/tried to exist, there would be at least 6 guys in backward snapbacks glaring in your direction. Gulp.

Agenda Long Beach

This was also my first trade show. To be honest, I've never even attended one (well, unless you count that one time an editor made me stalk track someone down at the Javits Center for a quote on deadline), let alone explain to complete strangers/industry experts/intimidatingly cool kids why my products were a worthwhile investment. The best part? When I started unpacking the goods, I realized the custom neon sign I had picked up the day before cracked during transport. Doh.

Agenda Long Beach

After a 6 AM trip to the neon sign shop, all was (finally) well the first day of the show. Having only half a booth was kind of weird, though, because it basically screamed to the world, "I AM TOO POOR TO AFFORD MY OWN 10X10 FOOT SPACE!" To give you some perspective, GoPro had 8 or so flat screen TVs and a motorcycle parked in their section, so, yeahhh.

Agenda Long Beach

The majority of the show was me sitting in my tiny area waiting for someone to talk to and/or taking meta photos of my hands (see: above), but at least I could people watch. The biggest trend takeaways: bucket hats for ladies, chokers, and killer French braid pigtails. I even spotted The Cobrasnake, Blake Anderson, and Kreayshawn (who ended up Instagramming my nails the next day!) pass through my area.

Agenda Long Beach

For some reason everyone forgot to mention the best part of Agenda before I arrived: THE GIANT CIRCLE OF FOOD TRUCKS AT YOUR DISPOSAL ALL FREAKIN' DAY. I nearly cried upon this discovery, but when it came time to grab some eats, it actually meant standing in line for 30+ minutes in direct sunlight.

Agenda Long Beach

And for this summer goth, it was the ultimate sweatfest.

Agenda Long Beach

Oh, did I mention this show was targeted toward dudes? No? Well, maybe this well help you understand.

Agenda Long Beach

Or this.

Agenda Long Beach

It was pretty awesome getting to see some artists work IRL, though. Also, there were people painting surfboards all day like it ain't no thang.

Agenda Long Beach

It's super easy to get overwhelmed by all the dude-heavy booths, but sometimes I'd spot gems like this signage by Ornamental Conifer.

Agenda Long Beach

Oh, also unlike real work, you could totally drink on the job. I tried it, but then I felt awkward/judged if a potential buyer caught me mid-beer sip. (Oops.)

Agenda Long Beach

My favorite part—by far—was this sectioned off area at the end of the WMNS aisle called #THEBABESHOW. Basically, it was a guy-free zone where ladies could chill and look at art (by other ladies, of course). One of my favorite NYC nail artists, Christina Rinaldi, shared some of her photography (above), which was presented by Human NYC gallery.

Agenda Long Beach

I loved this "NY is a babe" sign, which had quite a story behind it. (Let's just say traveling from NYC to LA with neon sign is really, really hard.) Other artists included Michelle Blade, Andrea Dosouto, and Adri Law. If you were super lucky, you might've even been able to snatch up a zine on your way out.

Agenda Long Beach

All in all, it was two very long days of standing on concrete under the hot pink glow of my neon sign, but I left with a bag full of business cards from incredibly inspiring people and (hopefully) some potential buyers. Until next time, peace out Long Beach!

Gwen Stefani Brings Back Her '90s Dip-Dyed Hair http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/14/gwen-stefani-dip-dye-hair/ http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/14/gwen-stefani-dip-dye-hair/#comments Mon, 14 Jul 2014 22:43:06 +0000 http://style.mtv.com/?p=210956

The more things change...
Photo: @gwenstefani's Instagram

Attention all Gwenabees: Gwen Stefani has changed her hair and is showing off her new 'do on Instagram. Well, maybe new isn't the right word to use. The last time Stefani experimented with color was well into the '90s, and the last time she went dark (with blue-black streaks) was 1999.

The No Doubt vocalist known for her platinum blonde locks hasn't deviated from her signature coiffure in years. Could this be a sign of things to come? Stefani is about to start her stint as judge and mentor on this upcoming season of The Voice and has a show with the rest of her band in September in Central Park. Are other big beauty changes on the way?

While we (obviously) adore Gwen's trademark platinum hair and red lip combo, we wouldn't mind seeing her resurface the electric blue hair and matching fuzzy bikini from 1998. Can we expect to see her embrace pink hair again? We can only hope. Really, really hard.

Conchita Wurst Walked At Paris Fashion Week, Might Be Drag's New Fashion Superstar http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/14/conchita-wurst-drag-superstar/ http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/14/conchita-wurst-drag-superstar/#comments Mon, 14 Jul 2014 20:00:53 +0000 http://style.mtv.com/?p=210753

This flawless queen.

Conchita Wurst, who came to international attention after winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2014, made news at Paris Fashion Week by walking in the Jean Paul Gaultier Couture show. Wurst closed out the show, a position usually given to the designer's favorite or the most famous model. Previous closers have included Dita Von Teese and Beth Ditto. Jean Paul has long been an advocate for so-called "unconventional" models. Early on in his career, he put out a listing in French paper Libération that read: “Nonconformist designer seeks unusual models–the conventionally pretty need not apply.”

Conchita is also the latest in a line of pioneers who are challenging mainstream conceptions of gender. This might be a reflection of fashion's fickle nature or it could mean that our perception of beauty has broadened; the fashion world is notoriously exclusive, and does not often veer from its rigid strictures of what is stylish, which is why we should not only applaud the casting decision, but also celebrate those who have come before. Below are a few other drag superstars who have made names for themselves.

The '90s ushered in the rise of the supermodel, and in 1992, it got its soundtrack, thanks to RuPaul's "Supermodel (You Better Work)." Soon after, in 1994, MAC Cosmetics tapped Ru to be the first face of Viva Glam, the line's campaign to raise awareness and outreach for those in the HIV/AIDS community, making Ru the world's first drag queen supermodel.

RuPaul parlayed his worldwide visibility into a drag empire. He has six albums, a successful podcast, a candy bar, and an irreverent reality show where drag queens from all over the globe have a chance to become the world's next "drag superstar." RuPaul's Drag Race has six seasons under its belt, and even has its own spinoff.

Drag Race has given a number of contestants a start in the fashion industry—the most recognizable is probably season-three winner Raja Gemini, also known as Sutan Amrull. Sutan has worked as a makeup artist for Adam Lambert, Dita Von Teese, Iman, Twiggy, Tyra Banks, and more. Sutan's also worked as the head makeup artist on America's Next Top Model during cycles four through 12.

'DRAG RACE' CONTESTANTS FOR MARCO MARCO

In 2013, Marco Marco had former RuPaul's Drag Race contestants walk at his L.A. Fashion Week show. Familiar faces like Shangela, Carmen Carerra, Willam, Detox, Vicky Vox and Adore Delano not only walked, but killed it. Petition to have Drag Race's contestants walk at least one show per season?

RuPaul has given rise to a number of drag superstars who are getting attention in fashion, both on the runway and backstage. Conchita is the most recent face, but here's hoping more join him soon—these entertainers deserve a wide-reaching platform and fashion is ready for change.

Iggy Azalea Goes Country For Her Calgary Stampede Performance http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/14/iggy-azalea-cowgirl/ http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/14/iggy-azalea-cowgirl/#comments Mon, 14 Jul 2014 16:45:20 +0000 http://style.mtv.com/?p=210884

Howdy.
Photo: @thenewclassic's Instagram

Iggy Azalea may have been born and raised in Australia, but she looked downright country western at the Calgary Stampede in Canada on Sunday night. While her spandex outfit was an Iggy standard—she even wore the same "Classic" top with inverted colors earlier this month—she topped her look off with a traditional cowgirl hat. Our girl loves changing up her onstage style, doesn't she?

This new look doesn't come as a complete surprise, though: in March, Iggy wore a similar white hat at the 2014 Woodies. Iggy opened for Snoop Dogg (another country western classic?) with an energetic performance of "Fancy," but her cowgirl accessory was saved for a separate special moment—a choreographed linedance-twerking break, natch. Iggy and her dancers all wore different outfits, but matched their hats. We just have one question: Iggy, are you sure you aren't a country girl at heart?

Rita Ora Upgrades Her Baby Hair With Some Glitter http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/14/rita-ora-glitter-baby-hair/ http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/14/rita-ora-glitter-baby-hair/#comments Mon, 14 Jul 2014 15:33:51 +0000 http://style.mtv.com/?p=210870

How perfectly coordinated is that purple to her ponytail?
Photo: @ritaora's Instagram

Man, Rita Ora doesn't know when to stop does she? Not only is she constantly changing up her hair game, she's also constantly elevating looks that she's previously rocked with aplomb. For example, Rita Ora's glittery baby hair. While we'e previously seen the style with braids, the "I Will Never Let You Down" singer debuted a new version of her baby hair over the weekend. This time, the old school favorite was showcased alongside a low, dip-dyed ponytail. The effect was soft, feminine, and beautiful. The game changer, though? A glitter accent.

All gold everything, please.
Photo: @chrisappleton1's Instagram

Rita liked the new look so much that she wore it again—this time in gold. Matching your glitter accents to your outfit? That takes some serious consideration.

I've always thought of glitter as a crafting supply. Or something you applied to your body before going out. But an accent sparkle in your hair? That's something I can totally get down with.

Get Rihanna's World Cup Celebration Tee http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/14/rihanna-world-cup-shirt/ http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/14/rihanna-world-cup-shirt/#comments Mon, 14 Jul 2014 13:30:06 +0000 http://style.mtv.com/?p=210867

Rihanna loves the World Cup so much.
Photo: Rihanna's Twitter/Trapstar

Considering how into the World Cup she's been throughout the past month, it's not a surprise that Rihanna watched the final game IRL in Rio de Janeiro. Also not surprising? After the game, she hung out with the victors. If Rihanna wants to hang out and take selfies with the World Cup, that's what happens, OK?

To the untrained eye, it may seem like Rih wore her new piercing, fave bucket hat, and a regular ol' black shirt to hang with the German team. The shirt, of course, is not regular, nor is it old old—it's Trapstar, has a very World Cup-appropriate name, and can be yours for $50.

She x Mario.
Photo: Rihanna's Twitter

The shirt is aptly called the "Blood Sweat No Tears" tee—if you watched the game, you know that on the German side there was a lot of sweat (like, buckets), some blood (mostly from Bastian Schweinsteiger's eye), and no tears. Fine, there may have been tears of joy, but let's not count those.

If you buy the shirt for yourself, there's no guarantee that you'll get to hang out with goal-scoring hero Mario Gotze, but you'll be channeling Rihanna regardless. Considering how well her bucket list is going, she's a pretty great person to channel at all times, IMHO.

Emma Watson showed up to the Valentino Haute Couture show in Paris lookin' like she just got off the back of a motorcycle. A fancy, gorgeous motorcycle. She also wore only one earring, which is just, like, her effortless style embodied.

Rihanna got her nose pierced. More specifically, she got her septum pierced. She tried to distract us from her new facial piercing with an iridescent bucket hat, but as Rihanna experts, we caught on quickly.

• Ciara debuted her brand new, two-tone, waist-length dreadlocks, which confirm her status as one of the coolest moms on the planet. Not that we need extra proof, TBH.

• Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Watson hung out in the front row of a Dior show, which is all fine and good, except they didn't invite me.

• Jared Leto wore gold pants to the Chanel show in Paris. Oh, the pants are from Chanel's women's collection.

Iggy Azalea And Rita Ora Tease Coordinated 'Black Widow' Video Looks http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/11/iggy-azalea-rita-ora-black-widow-video-teaser/ http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/11/iggy-azalea-rita-ora-black-widow-video-teaser/#comments Fri, 11 Jul 2014 21:41:03 +0000 http://style.mtv.com/?p=210810

YAAAS.

While "Fancy" has dominated the charts for the past seven weeks, it looks like we'll soon have another Iggy Azalea single to sing in the car this summer. Both Iggy and Rita Ora—who is featured in the song—just teased an image for their forthcoming "Black Widow" video and, wow, we are definitely in for something great. I mean, Rita and Iggy in one video—can we handle it?

The teaser cartoon features the duo in coordinated black and red jumpsuits—it's very Kill Bill, no? We already know Iggy is a pro at recreating movies in her videos, maybe we'll get some sword fights in this one? Fingers crossed Iggy and Rita are on the same team—they'd be pretty unstoppable, IMHO.

Both ladies were very discreet about the news, simply adding "#comingsoon" to their captions. How soon is soon, you guys? After slipping us such an unexpected image, I don't think the world can handle a long wait.

Official Ruling: This Ruth Bader Ginsburg Swag Deserves Your Attention http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/11/ruth-bader-ginsburg-merch/ http://style.mtv.com/2014/07/11/ruth-bader-ginsburg-merch/#comments Fri, 11 Jul 2014 20:45:39 +0000 http://style.mtv.com/?p=210349
Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Ruth Bader Ginsberg is five feet and one inch of all-around toughness. She’s been one of our favorite women for quite some time. What’s not to love about the icon who has fought for women’s rights for nearly 60 years and has no intention of stepping down from the bench at the spry age of 81? And while some wines and cheeses may mellow with age, not so for our Ruth. Her dissent in last week’s Hobby Lobby case was 35 pages of fine legal writing blended with a healthy helping of controlled rage.

The internet, in all its bountiful, weird glory, has turned the tiny living legend into a meme, a song, nail art, and of course, an amazing Tumblr… plus plenty of stylish ways to show your love for, yes, the Notorious R.B.G.

The ORIGINAL

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Photo: Tee Spring

NYU Law Student Shanna Knizhnik started the Notorious R.G.B Tumblr nearly one year ago, and it’s still as amazing and hilarious as ever. Get down with R.B.G. and purchase this tee—there’s a direct link from Knizhnik’s Tumblr page, and I love the idea of the T-shirt proceeds supporting the busy law student/meme creator.

THE SWAGGER

But, oh, the options abound. The typeface! The Biggie crown! The racerback option! I’m sold.

THE FRILL SILHOUETTE

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Photo: Booster

The design is flawless, the tagline is hilarious, and all proceeds support Planned Parenthood. But act fast—there are only HOURS left in the campaign. (P.S. How great is it that the model is a man? Dudes, thanks for having our backs on this.)

THE BADA$$

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Frankly, this just says it all.

THE CLIQUE

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Photo: Spreadshirt

When wearing this shirt you may have fantasies of hanging out with this crew. That's encouraged. (Shoutout to Irin Carmon who introduced us to this beauty.)

THE EMBROIDERED UTERUS WALL HANGING

(1) I love this, and (2) I love this, and (3) I can guarantee you that these supplies were purchased at any craft store other than Hobby Lobby. Plus, Etsy seller cookoorikoo will donate $18 from each sale to her local Planned Parenthood!

THE GREETING CARD GODDESS

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

The ruling is in: I’m mailing my next crush this “I’d Like To Court You” card.

THE ‘STOP IN THE NAME OF JUSTICE’

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

And then, there was that time someone re-imagined Justices Sotomayor, Ginsburg, and Kagan as legendary Motown group the Supremes. Because OF COURSE they did. (And now, I’m picturing the three of them on karaoke night. I’d be willing to bet they could pull off an incredible “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.” Dedicated to Justice Scalia, perhaps?) If you haven't yet, by the way, be sure to check out Justice Sotomayor's dissent, which all three female justices cosigned.
