Boho Rock

Okay, so technically these Boho Rocks are "face and body" tattoos. We concede that in the model shot for the flower version, they illustrate an example of the tiny strip tatts being used as faux bracelets, but let's be real. With a name like "Boho Rock," these were clearly made with the intention of providing an alternative to the skinny headbands worn bohemian-style across the forehead. It's a decent idea since many ladies cite that their aversion to the dome pieces are the way they flatten hair or make weird crease marks. The Boho Rock tatts get you a similar look without all the fuss. But, like, guys... This is a forehead tattoo. If you squint your eyes really hard, yea, it kinda looks like a headband, but at the end of the day, you're temporarily joining the leagues of these forehead-tattooed brethren. *sucks teeth in second-hand embarrassment*

Rita Ora.
Photo: Courtesy of NEXT Models

Rita Ora may still be relatively new to our ears stateside (the girl hasn't even released her debut album yet!), but she's already secured herself a comfy place in Jay-Z's Roc Nation crew...not to mention, major MVP status on our iPods. We haven't stopped playing "How We Do (Party)" ever since the singer first debuted the single way back in February. And once we discovered that the 21-year-old has style that's just as crazy-cool as her music, she's become one to watch in the fashion world, too. So is it really any surprise, then, that NEXT Models- the same agency that reps Lana del Rey, Ellie Goulding, AND Alice Glass- has now snagged Rita for their roster? Between Lana for H&M, Solange for Madewell, and Azealia for Alexander Wang, it's been a summer FILLED with music-fashion mashups...and it's only a matter of time before Rita hops onboard.

Azealia Banks in a Balmain jacket and Beyond Retro Hoodie.
Photo: Dazed & Confused/Sharif Hamza

It was the gasp heard round the internet last week, when word started to spread that Azealia Banks' Dazed & Confused cover was going to be banned in seven countries. Seven! That's just madness. More mad than that, even, was the fact that when all this hullabaloo was going on hardly anyone, besides the people at Dazed themselves, had actually even seem the cover. Needless to say, our minds began to wander, and with the little bit of information that we had (pink phallice, "held up like a cigar"), we were left without too many words besides, "I wonder when we'll see it." Not to say that we're easily scandalized, or at all precious with our lady rap stars. Indeed, Azealia has a tendency towards evocative, sexualized lyrics, so it's only appropriate that she would carry over her performance persona into her press presence. When the cover was finally revealed, lurid, fuchsia condom "cigar" and all, we have to say we kind of dug it. Sure, it's a little bit, um, squirm inducing and we probably wouldn't want to read it around our grandma (we already saw Black Swan with her and that was awk enough for our whole lives, thanks), but Azealia looks totally mermaid-ilicious in a Balmain vest and seapunk-seafoam locks that we can't stop staring at.

Selena Gomez

A still from Selena Gomez's new Dream Out Loud commercial.
Photo: Courtesy of SelGomez's YouTube channel

It's been over TWO MONTHS since Selena Gomez started teasing this new Dream Out Loud commercial for her Fall 2012 campaign, but finally (FINALLY!!), we're able to set eyes on the final product. As we saw in the behind-the-scenes sneak peek Sel revealed late last month, the 30-second spot follows our girl through three stages of an epic California road trip. Miss Gomez peels off solo dolo for this particular venture (all the better to showcase the new togs, duhhhhh) and travels from the desert road to a surf-friendly beach to a midnight highway lit by fireworks, all to the tune of her smash single "Hit The Lights".

Le Tote.
Photo: Le Tote Facebook

Fact: we're all guilty of complaining about having nothing to wear. Usually this leads to impulse shopping, cheap thrills, and a closet overstocked with outfits we only wear once. But now a new website is here to help...with a solution that DOESN'T involve hitting up the closest Forever 21. Instead, Le Tote takes the same monthly online subscription concept of Birchbox, ShoeMint, and even Netflix- and applies it to your wardrobe. Here's the breakdown: you fill out a "style profile" online, the site's in-house stylists will choose three clothing items and two accessories, and they'll ship them to you in the mail.

Janelle Monáe for Covergirl.
Photo:Courtesy of Covergirl

It seems like just yesterday when we announced that P!nk was the latest addition to the Covergirl roster (okay, it was last week, but still...). However, turns out the beauty giant isn't quite finished yet- Covergirl has ANOTHER music industry darling up its sleeve. Yesterday the company announced that Janelle Monáe would be joining the ranks of Drew Barrymore, Taylor Swift and P!nk as the brand's latest face. The ads, which premiere in the September issue of VOGUE magazine, showcase Miss Monáe working her trademark retro bouffant, rosy cheeks, and some statement red lips. Let's be real: if anyone can convince us to clean out our drawer to make room for even more makeup, it's Janelle Monáe....

Lady Gaga, V Magazine

Lady Gaga writes on the benefits of manicure in latest "V" magazine column.
Photo: Courtesy of "V" Magazine

Paws up, ladies! Lady Gaga is back at the writing desk for V Magazine and contributing pearls (and rhinestones and glitterbombs) of wisdom for her guest column. The latest hot topic for Gaga Memo No. 7? The genuine importance of manicures. It makes sense. If your hallmark gesticulation has you and your fans flashing your tips at all hours of the day, y'all better make sure your nail beds don't suck (sorry, Karen Smith!). At MTV Style, we always have our eyes glued to the growing nail art landscape, but Mother Monster makes some solid points about the health and maintenance virtues that go hand-in-hand with regular manicures.

Feeling blue about trading in your bikini for pencils and backpacks and binders? Don't be glum, stylettes! Back to school doesn't have to be a drag, and we're not just talking about the obligatory wardrobe revamp. A new school year, whether you're in high school, college, or grad school (or anything in between) is one of those rare chances to start over, to show off, to reinvent yourself. We've already broken down our favorite backpacks, varsity jackets, summer to fall trends, and sneakers, but we wanted to take a look at some killer first day looks that will help you put your mark on the school year in style.

FOR THE STYLIN' NERD

Being a bookworm doesn't have to be stuffy.
Photo: Urban Outfitters/Club Monaco/Marais USA/Madewell/Everlane

Since the dawn of time (modern time, that is), one of the most mysterious, awesome, coolest breeds of girl has been the stylish nerd. Is there anything more timeless than a great pair of horn-rimmed specs? Or the perfect pair of penny loafers? And is there any girl prettier than the one who can look as confident in a pair of pants and a button down as she would in a ball gown? The answer is no, which is why our one of our fave first day of school looks goes out to all the four-eyed stylettes in the audience. Since we're building from the frames down here, our faves are the Begley frames in whiskey tortoise from Warby Parker ($95). The brand also has a ton of other shapes and colors to fit any face, so our fave doesn't have to be yours too. They're equal parts Harry Potter and librarian chic, which are two things we're definitely going for here. Sometimes it's cute to be a little matchy-matchy, especially where accessories are involved, so we lurve this tortoise shell iPhone case from Case-mate ($40). While we're on the topic of accessories, a colorful belt adds a surprising splash to a simple outfit, and we love this Sundew leather one from Madewell ($48). It's no surprise that we love a good backpack, and the just released snap backpack in blue from Everlane ($65) reminds us a bit of Huckleberry Fin, so we think it would be perfect for lugging around all your favorite books, and yeah, the ones you're assigned, too. And not for the outfit! Every girl should have a simple pair of high-waisted black skinny jeans, it goes without saying, and these Urban Outfitters cigarette high-rise jeans ($39-on sale!) do the trick like none other. The classic move would be a crisp white oxford, but we wanted to throw a modern twist into the mix, which we managed to do quite nicely with the Faye Zodiac print shirt from Club Monaco ($129). If you can't tell, those are tiny zodiac symbols printed all over this button down, *swoon.* To top it all off, we found that perfect pair of penny loafers (say that 10 times fast) we were talking about, the Marais USA loafer flat in nude ($49).

Lily Collins in 'Glamour.'
Photo: Courtesy of Glamour

Okay, so we're just going to come out and say it: we have a major girl crush on Lily Collins. We've loved the L.A.-based actress ever since her hosting duties on Nickelodeon way back when, but nowadays, with big-time movies like The Blind Side and Mirror Mirror to her name, the former teen TV reporter has officially grown into a full-blown movie star. We're not the only ones noticing, either. None other than Glamour's September cover girl and the issue's newest guest editor,Victoria Beckham, tapped Lily for the mag's special spread (no big deal). The 23-year-old is absolutely radiant in the images, sporting a ruffled pale pink knit sweater and working her signature strong brows like nobody's business. Paging Brooke Shields...

Kanye West's '80s and Heartbreak' created from socks (left) and the original album cover.
Photo: Famous Sock Covers Tumblr / Amazon

There are some seriously ridiculous Tumblrs in the black hole of the blogosphere, but our latest discovery just might take the weird/crazy/cool prize of them all- at least for this week. Behold, "Famous Album Covers Recreated With My Socks." Yes, it's exactly what it sounds like... and yes, it's kind of amazing. Inspired by iconic album art from over the years from musicians like Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, and Pearl Jam, the brains behind the site have crafted their own version using.... the contents of their sock drawers.
