Sex Pistols and Nirvana, represent.
By now, you've probably heard the news. But if you're like "Huh? News? What?," allow me to make your day: 5 Seconds of Summer is performing at the 2014 Video Music Awards! It's a REALLY BIG DEAL (!!!) that warrants all caps and many exclamation points because it'll be the boy band's biggest-ever televised performance in the U.S., which means they're going to be an even more major deal than they already are. Which means this performance is very important. Which means what they wear onstage for said performance is, like, make-or-break important.
Fortunately, the four dudes from Australia have their performance style on lock. For the uninitiated, here's a style primer. If you're an expert in 5SOS, or just someone who stares at pictures of them periodically, you know that they're into repping other bands while performing. Big time. They've created something of a roll call of all their musical inspirations and we're here to pay homage to their T-shirt collection. Check out our faves below!

The Billboard Music Awards marked 5 Seconds of Summer's first-ever televised performance in the U.S. (Translation: Us Americans are soon going to be just as obsessed as their fellow Aussies already are.) So, yeah, tonight was a pretty major milestone for the about-to-be-HUGE boy band, and making a big first impression calls for pulling out all the stops, style-wise. Taking a cue from boy bands past, the dudes hit the stage wearing something we've never seen on them before—matching outfits. This was no all-white-everything suit situation like Backstreet Boys' heyday, nor was it anything like One Direction's color-coordinated pocket squares, because 5SOS aren't your average boy band.

It's been a decade and a half since Backstreet Boys' third album, Millennium, hit the airwaves, forever changing our lives and the legacy of boy bands as we know it.
Unlike the dudes in *NSync, who each had their own respective personal styles, BSB exhibited an admirable dedication to matching. They matched in the videos off of their first and second albums (see: "Quit Playing Game [With My Heart]" and "As Long As You Love Me" for two prime examples), but their propensity for outfit coordination hit a truly impressive note during their Millennium era.
When you think of the word "millennium," what do you think of? The year 2000? Nah. You think of five dudes dressed in head-to-toe white and that's thanks to the album cover and, largely, this video. This monotone look was iconic enough that Blink-182 spoofed it in one of their videos. These outfits deserve attention and we're gonna give it to 'em.

5 Seconds of Summer just bein' awesome.
By now, unless you're the kind of person who hates music (what's WRONG with you?) or has no internet connection (which would be impossible, since you're reading these very important words right now), you've heard of 5 Seconds of Summer. You've probably listened to their debut single that's about, among other things, American Apparel underwear, and watched their music video (which shows a bunch of people in their, yes, underwear), and read a bunch of stuff comparing them to One Direction, who they'll be touring with later this summer (and who, it should be mentioned, they've danced in their underwear with).
Skivvies aside, 5SOS—as their most dedicated fans and also lazy typers call them—are an exceptionally stylish boy band. They're like a punkier, less-polished One Direction, which is also kinda what their music is like.
Because you're going to be seeing a whole lotta them over the next few months, between a world tour, a possible song of the summer, and what looks to be a BFD Rolling Stone shoot, we're taking it upon ourselves to make sure you're well-versed in the personal styles—and personalities—of the Aussie foursome. If nothing else, your tween cousin will be impressed.
One Direction on the cover of "Teen Vogue."

Look, guys! It's One Direction on the cover of Teen Vogue! Feel like you're having déjà vu? Pretty sure you remember 1D JUST posing for the The Fashion Bible's younger sister really recently? Welp, you're not alone. And you're not wrong, either! The world's most adorable Brit-Irish boy band is gracing the cover of Teen Vogue for a second time, less than a year after the group's first appearance. Back in winter, Teen Vogue gave Harry, Zayn, Liam, Niall, and Louis individual covers swaddled in tweeds and wool knits—"Hot Holiday Style" was the predominant cover line. Now, the teen glossy has the dudes (deservedly) back for their September issue (a.k.a. the Super Bowl issue of the fashion editorial world)!

You know One Direction, right? Cute, smiley boy band from across the pond? Infectious pop songs? Impeccable hair? If you were anywhere in the 500 yard vicinity of a teenage girl earlier this week, you probably know that they released an adorably hilarious music video for their new single "Best Song Ever." Welp, we have more news for you and the 1D-obsessed masses: the guys have a full makeup collection collaboration now, replete with nail polishes, lipsticks, lip glosses, and cheek tint.

Directioners, are you still breathing?? It's been several hours now since the release of One Direction's "Best Song Ever" music video (#BestVideoEver), and I'm still barely able to process all my incredibly, overwhelmingly positive feelings about it. I can only imagine how the most die-hard 1D Stans are doing right now. If you haven't watched it yet, do yourself a favor, scroll to the bottom, and watch it already. Granted, I am also a fan, but come on, how can you argue that this isn't the science of the Boy Band (which, OK, is more like one-third science, one-third pop magic, and one-third hormones) vacillating at its highest, most unquestionably adorable frequency?
The "Best Song Ever" music video a One Direction masterpiece that will go down in these dudes' history of group iconography in much the same way that "It's Gonna Be Me" does for *NSYNC. LOADED COMPARISON, I KNOW. But y'all, this video is good. And what's one of the biggest parts of why it's so good? THE OUTFITS. *puts hand to ear and looks off in the distance* Hear that? It's a Look By Look. And it's coming your way in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1!
Siva Kaneswaran for Next Models.

Holy WHAT. ?!?? I know we basically already did this little song-and-dance when The Wanted's Siva Kaneswaran was initially signed to Next Models, but WOWOWOW. Are you seeing what I'm seeing? Listen, the first round of photos of Siva that the agency used for the announcement were great. Blue Steel and bow ties. A manicured mane befitting of his boy band heartthrob status and a whole lot of wearing suiting really, really well. But the latest set of Next Models' Siva snaps? WOO! *fans self with right hand* This is some high fashion street goth REALNESS. Mama like.
One Direction and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley on the cover of 'Glamour' magazine.
Because a movie trailer full of rampant half-nudity isn't enough One Direction for one week, Glamour has just revealed that everyone's favorite Brit-Irish boy band is gracing the cover of their August music issue. Not only that, they're joined on the glossy front by drop-dead model-actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. As expected, the dudes' hair game is on lock. Harry, Louis, Liam, Niall, and Zayn all expertly toe the line between effortless bedhead and exceptional grooming while their mugs (which BTW are sporting some of the most endearingly dopey fanboy smiles we've ever seen) circle Rosie obliging head like some kind of magical dream ladyteen Christmas wreath.
This is it! The moment that LEGIONS of Directioners (ourselves included) have been waiting for. The full One Direction movie trailer for 1D: This Is Us is out now and ready for our repeated playback, screenshotting, and general ogling pleasure. The teaser clocks in at just over three minutes of rowdy boy action, a sneak peek at the dudes' new track "Best Song Ever," and ACCENTS. The guys' goofy antics are way reminiscent of *NSYNC in their prime and fully remind us why the whole "boy band" thing has been begging to come back, but rather than following in the carbon-copy clothes and well-choreographed footsteps of their boy band predecessors, 1D is the cheekier, slightly less regimented, INFINITELY better dressed iteration for present day. Their This Is Us trailer reflects all of the above accordingly, SO we're breaking down our top ten style moments from it for you. (And yes, that does mean we captured still images of Harry and Liam with their pants down.) Enjoy!

THIS is what sets One Direction apart as a next generation boy band. Gone are the days of matching shapeless jumpsuits. 1D reps experimenting with textures, color-coordinated layering, and pants that actually fit.
