Lady Gaga

As it turns out, all of that confusion surrounding Lady Gaga’s new video was warranted. Even though it’s being billed as the visual for “G.U.Y.,” it’s more of a short film than a music video, split into four sections: “ARTPOP,” “Venus,” “G.U.Y.,” and “Manicure.” Did you expect any less from a video shot at a CASTLE over the course of a week? This is ARTPOP we’re talking about, where things are a little more abstract, even for Gaga. Clocking in at 11 minutes and 47 seconds, this is Gaga’s longest video to date which means (a) Brandon Maxwell had his hands full in the wardrobe department, and (b) much to our delight, there is an epic number of outfits to discuss.

In the opening “ARTPOP” shot, we see a bunch of men fighting over money as Gaga is left in a ditch with her back punctured by an arrow, looking like a wounded bird. The men walk away, picking up bills scattered across the hilltop floor on their way out, and Gaga struggles to pull out the arrow. Now, I don’t speak Gaga but I can guess that all of this imagery is an allusion to the age-old existential struggle between art and commerce. Even more interesting is the parallel, whether intentional or not, to Kanye West’s short film for “Runaway,” which also features a Phoenix character played by Selita Ebanks.

Lady Gaga Applause Cover

If there's one thing we can expect from Lady Gaga, it's that, well, we just never know what we're gonna get! She's constantly surprising us--I mean, just last week (after a six month hiatus), news dropped that Mother Monster will be performing at the 2013 Video Music Awards and today WWD released an interview with Gaga in which she revealed cryptic details on her upcoming ARTPOP album and--GASP--what she'll wear to the VMAs. The "Applause" single cover art, which features Lady Gaga with a colorful, make-up smeared visage, was shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. She is wrapped in a white Gareth Pugh jacket, and, interestingly enough, this image is ACTUALLY from her upcoming "Applause" music video, which was also shot by the Inez and Vinoodh duo. Gaga chose this image because "it’s the end of the night after the show. When I look at it I see that there is a longing for the applause. I see that there is a void that is leaking onstage, that the performer is leaking, that the art is sort of becoming something else in front of your eyes. Something more human, something more honest.”

If you're anything like us, you're nowhere close to having enough Lady Gaga in your life. Her history of sartorial risk-taking and deep rooting in popular music, without a doubt, consistently piques your interest and naturally, makes her the PUH-RIME subject for a blog such as ours. You know it. We know it. Even she knows it. Which is why she's (omgomgomgggg) performing at the 2011 Video Music Awards and obliged MTV with some seriously amazeballs promos just DRIPPING in fash-alicious goodness.

We already walked you through the series in which Gaga gets jazzy with her latest single "'Yoü And I", but last night during Jersey Shore, we watched the premiere of a SECOND promo with FOUR DIFFERENT OUTFITS. We watched with open-mouthed gazes as Gaga slithered from one pantsless outfit to the next in this "Muse Factory" TV spot, and seriously guys, our little hearts almost couldn't contain our rapture! Since we're sure you're dying to know, we're bringing you a break down of all the fashion credits from the promo - the hard work and creativity of fashion director Nicola Formichetti, stylist Brandon Maxwell, hair stylist Frederic Aspiras, makeup artist Tara Savelo, and nail guru Aya Fukuda.

Remember last night when THE Lady Gaga stopped by MTV to share her big Video Music Awards announcement (SPOILER ALERT: She's opening up the show!), and we caught it ALL live during the "MTV First: Lady Gaga" livestream? We do! But what resonated with us looonnggg after Gaga left her fashion-y Little Monsters behind was that to-die-for ensemble. Who made that GORGE sculpted lace overlay dress with a velvet belt? Where can we find that incredible oversized white hat? Well friends, we've got the scoop on her head-to-toe ensemble (thanks to her style team: fashion director Nicola Formichetti, stylist Brandon Maxwell, hairstylist Frederic Aspiras, makeup artist Tara Savelo, and nail artist Aya Fukuda) below!

Lady Gaga waxes poetic.
Photo: MTV

Last year was the meat dress. The year before, she bled to death. So the minute we heard that Lady Gaga herself was performing at 2011's VMAs, we got on the horn to our bookies, started taking odds, and placed bets on what her Gaga-ness will wear. According the her hot-off-the-presses VMA promos, we might be betting on nothing, literally, as Gaga strips down to her bare essentials while singing a jazz rendition of "Yoü And I."

Gone is the Versace kaleidoscope of colors we've seen of late, replaced by a Gaga who invokes smoke-filled cafes and a poet behind the piano by setting things in black-and-white, looking like a classic dame who just wants to rid herself of her bra. Even though she has mod/modern angles and contrast galore, she nods to the classicism of a chick with a piano and an upright bass with waist-length string of pearls...which is one of the few things remaining when Gaga stops.

Watch Lady Gaga's 2011 VMA: First Look promo videos, and don't miss "MTV First: Lady Gaga," an exclusive live Q&A on Thursday, Aug. 18 at 7:49 p.m. ET. to watch Gaga discuss her "Yoü And I" video, her upcoming VMA performance, and make a special VMA announcement. Until then, here's a breakdown of all of the genius fashion and beauty scrawled all over this promo thanks to Gaga's fashion director Nicola Formichetti and their amazing team (Brandon Maxwell, Frederic Aspiras, Tara Savelo, and Aya Fukuda).

I love these two as a couple. What a festive way to celebrate two important events in their life. Mariah looks like a dream.
